Among over 1400 swimmers who were entered at the 2010 Far Western Championships were three TNT swimmers who swam fast enough in the preliminary heats to get a second swim by making it into the final heat  and earning a medal. Sixteen year old Thomas Brown training in Tulare earned his second swim in the 15-16 boys 100 freestyle where he swam 49.42 in the preliminary heats and improved to a 49.37 in the final heat for a 6th place finish. Twelve year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia earned his second swim in the 11-12 boys 50 yard butterfly event where he swam 27.42 in the morning and improved to a 27.30 for a 6th place finish late that afternoon. Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder was our last finalist who swam a lifetime best of 33.30 in the morning for her 50 yard breaststroke, and then improved to another lifetime best of 32.88 in the final heat of the 11-12 girls 50 breaststroke and 7th place finish.

Congratulations to all swimmers who qualified for, and competed at, the Far Western Championships. The following are individual TNT Far Western swimmers and their highest placed event swam: Owen Ansel (11-12 50 back, 54th), Thomas Brown (15-16 100 free, 6th), Allyson Duffy (11-12 500 free, 51st), Parker Giles (9-10 50 free, 13th), Emily Goodbar (11-12 100 fly, 61st), Kyle Grissom (11-12 50 fly, 6th), Katelyn Herrera (11-12 200 fly, 29th), Dax Korenwinder (9-10 50 breast, 17th), Mallory Korenwinder (11-12 50 breast, 7th), Khloe McCarthy (11-12 400 IM, 63rd), Preston Niayesh (9-10 100 breast, 21st), Christopher Nolan (13-14 100 breast, 20th), Nathan Oskam (17-18 50 free, 11th). Ten year old Parker Giles led the team in record-breaking performances at 2010 Far Western Championships held at Morgan Hill. Overall six team records were broken, and three of them single handedly by Parker. Parker’s 29.01 in the 50 freestyle was fast enough for a 13th place finish and his nearly one second improvement was fast enough to break the team record formerly set as 29.68 by Jonathan Granada set only last year at the RCA meet in April. Parker went on to improve over six and a half seconds in his 100 freestyle to swim a 1:03.50 to break Jonathan’s team record by a half second. Jonathan’s 1:04.02 record was set last year at Far Westerns. Parker’s final record came in the 200 freestyle where his improvement of over 11 seconds brought his 2:28.89 that he swam at JO’s two months ago down to a 2:17.41 and once again a half second under Jonathan’s previous team record that was set in April of last year. His 2:17.41 is the 237th fastest time in the nation among 995 recorded swims to date.

Twelve year old Kyle Grissom, training in Visalia, previously set the team record at Junior Olympics two months ago with a 28.02, and his performance at Far Westerns dropped his team record in the 50 fly to a 27.30. His time is currently the 128th fastest time in the nation for all 12-year old boys. Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder set a new record in the 50 yard breaststroke with her time of 32.88. The previous record was set in 2002 at the winter AA meet held in Cerritos by Joclyn Ford who is currently swimming for Fresno Pacific. Mallory’s time is currently the 17th fastest time in the nation among all 11-year old girls, and a mere 1.6 seconds from the CCS record which is an 11-12 year old record. Our final team record was broken by two 10-under individuals in the 100 yard breaststroke event. Dax Korenwinder’s 1:26.73 broke the previous record that was set at 1:26.89 by Preston Niayesh at Junior Olympics; however, 9-year old Preston successfully defended his record at Far Westerns by improving his time by nearly a second to a 1:26.17 and maintaining his position as the all time fastest swim in the 9-10 boys 100 breaststroke event. Preston’s time is currently the 81st fastest time in the nation out of 1000 swims.

Three new Far Western cuts were made by two individuals who already were on the qualifying list for the prestigious age group meet. Sixteen year old Wesley Coles swam a 1:02.38 in the 100 meter butterfly event to not only make an addition Far Western cut (to bring his total to 8), but this is also his first qualifying time for the Speedo Grand Challenge to held at Irvine in May. Ten year old Parker Giles increased his Far Western cuts from four to six by qualifying in two additional events: 200 meter freestyle (2:45.13) and 100 meter free (1:15.20). Parker’s 100 meter freestyle time is approximately 1.5 seconds off of the team record.

Over half of our swimmers (26) now have newly recorded long course time with the team. The 24 remaining swimmers maintained a 68% improvement percentage with ten of them improving all events that were entered and swam. Congratulations go to perfect improvement performances by: Jake Caminero, Joshua Caminero, Wes Coles, Chris Hansen, Makenna Mason, Michael Mason, Madison McCarthy, Athena Niayesh, Chris Nolan and Savanah Nolan.

Sam Hansen became our only championship finalist at the Clovis Senior Q meet that was host to over 300 swimmers primarily from Pacific Swimming. With his championship finish, Sam became the highest point-getter on our team with 17 points in two scoring events. Sam became our championship finalist by swimming 4:19.10 in the preliminary heats of the 400 IM, which was fast enough for a 10th place finish, where he was then moved to the championship heat. He then advanced from 9th to 8th while there. Sam led off the first day of the Senior Q meet with a 10:11.32 in the 1000 freestyle which was fast enough for an 11th place finish that placed TNT in eighth place after the first day of the meet. Sam shaves a half second off of his 100 fly with a 59.37 and 46th place finish. Sam nearly swims under the minute with his 1:00.06 which was fast enough for a 26th place finish in the C-final.

Nathan Rhea was our next highest scorer as he earned three points in the 200 fly event, improving just over a second with a 2:06.24 which took him into finals in 17th place. While in the B finals, Nathan improved nearly three additional seconds and moved to 14th place with a time of 2:03.83. Nathan nearly broke the 2 minute mark with his 2:01.99 in the 200 IM and finished 13th in that event.

Sprinter Colin Landweer who resides in Lemoore and trains in Tulare swam a total of 13 races at the meet, and on days would swim six times. His scoring event came in the 500 freestyle where his 4:53.81 in the preliminary heats and 16th place consolation swim earned a point for the overall team total, and more importantly, became his second Sectional cut. His bonus final events included: 100 free (27th – 50.16), 100 fly (25th – 56.88), 100 breast (24th– 1:06.25) and 200 IM (24th– 2:06.98).

Wesley Coles swam his first sub-5 minute time in the 500 yard freestyle, and did so twice with a 4:59.19 in the preliminary heats, getting close enough to scratch into the bonus final heat where he finished 21st with a 4:56.61. Wesley Coles had the largest improvement of over 11 seconds in the 400 IM where he earned a C-final spot with a 4:28.29 and finished 26th in that event.

Jordan Morillo, currently training with Fresno State, returned from her conference meet and swam 4 seconds faster in the 200 freestyle to a 2:01.71. Jordan just missed the team record in the 100 fly with her 1:00.88 and 28th place finish from the preliminary heats. Jordan Morillo broke the team record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:08.95 and swam to a 17th place finish in the preliminary heats. The previous record was set by Katherine Bristow in December of 2008 at the Tulare meet.

Thirteen year old Christopher Nolan was one of the youngest male swimmers competing at the meet, and earned a second swim in the bonus heat for the 200 butterfly event where he swam a life-time best of 2:11.37 and finished 23rd. Among the other events that Chris swam, he also time trialed his 100 breaststroke, and swam well under the 1:09.09 time standard for the Q meet, and also achieved an additional Far Western cut with his 1:08.39. Chris also swam to a 11nd place finish in the 1000 freestyle with a 11:01.56.
