Both Alonso Escobedo’s (training in Hanford) time of 40.23 and Parker Giles’s 39.24 in the 50 meter backstroke were faster than the team’s previous record of 40.46 for the 10-under boys. The previous record was set by Parker while at the Clovis meet in May of this year. Alonso’s 40.23 is currently the 322nd fastest time in the nation for all 10 year old boys, while Parker’s 39.24 is now the 189th fastest. Our other record breaking performance came from 12-year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia. Kyle’s 30.66 in the 50 meter butterfly was fast enough for a second place finish and also broke his own pre-existing record of 31.51 that he set at the Clovis meet in May. Kyle’s new personal best of 30.66 is currently the 51st fastest time nationally for all 12 year old boys.

Fifteen of our 23 swimmers swam fast enough to score at the meet, placing either among the top 8 or the next 8 (9th – 16th). Our seven Top-8 finishers included Owen Ansel (6th – 50 breast), Hannah Giles (6th-50 free), Parker Giles (2nd-50 free, 3rd-50 breast, 4th-50 back; 4th-100 breast), Kyle Grissom (2nd-50 fly; 4th-50 breast; 7th-100 fly), Dax Korenwinder (5th-50 breast), Mallory Korenwinder (2nd-50 breast; 3rd-100 breast), and Mia Newkirk (7th-50free). Individuals who placed 9th – 16th also scored at the meet, and these included the following 14 swimmers (listed along with their top-16 place finish): Allyson Duffy (16th), Madison Ekizian (11th), Alonso Escobedo (9th, 9th, 9th, 10th, 13th & 15th), Hannah Giles (16th), Parker Giles (12th & 14th), Kyle Grissom (14th & 14th), Katelyn Herrera (15th), Dax Korenwinder (11th), Mallory Korenwinder (16th & 16th), Colin Landweer (15th), Michael Mason (13th, 14th & 15th), Mia Newkirk (10th, 11th, 13th, & 14th), Preston Niayesh (10th & 11th), and Chris Nolan (11th, 14th, 14th, & 15th).

Twenty three TNT swimmers who traveled to Ventura to compete at this year’s June Age Group Invitational maintained a team improvement percentage of 47%. Mia Newkirk along with Ethan Torosian both improved 100% of the times they swam at the meet. Khloe McCarthy, swimming the most events at the meet, maintained the third highest improvement percentage at 86%, followed by Alonso Escobedo (83%), Kyle Grissom (83%) and Michael Mason (67%). Six additional swimmers improved half of their times at the meet, and these included: Madison Ekizian, Parker Giles, Katelyn Herrera, Makenna Mason, and Christopher Nolan.

Bobby Yribarren training in Selma along with Nathan Rhea earned a combined three final swims while at the Mission Viejo Swim Meet of Champions held during the third weekend of June. Our five TNT swimmers competed alongside swimmers representing club and collegiate teams both from across the United States and countries such as Korea, Japan and Canada.

Bobby Yriabarren swam to the highest place finish of any TNT swimmer on the team with a consolation finish of 16th in the 200 meter butterfly event, and a time of 2:12.93. Nathan Rhea was our only other finalist, swimming fast enough to earn two second swims in the bonus heat for each of the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Nathan’s 2:34.55 in the preliminary heats for the 200 meter breaststroke event was fast enough for a 17th place seed into the bonus final heat. His 1:12.11 for the 100 meter breaststroke earned a 24th place finish in that event. Additionally, Nathan set a new team record in the 800 meter freestyle event with a 8:56.53, shaving just under former team record holder Sam Hansen’s time of 8:57.10 that was set last year at the Junior Olympics.

Time improvements were led by Nathan Rhea who improved 5 of 7 events, Colin Landweer, improving 2 of 3, and Bobby Yribarren who also improved 2 of 3 events. An additional time improvement came from Jordan Morillo improving her 200 IM time (2:35.52), and Sam Hansen in the 100 meter freestyle (59.26) as he earned his spot on the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. This year, Wesley Coles joined Nathan Rhea, Colin Landweer and Sam Hansen as first-time qualifiers to the meet.

After breaking three short course team records while at FarWesterns last month, Parker Giles returns to the long course season and breaks two additional 10-under team records while at the Bakersfield meet during the first weekend of May. The 100 meter freestyle record was set last year at this same meet in Bakersfield by Jonathan Granada as 1:14.74. Parker has now established the record at 1:14.18. Parker’s second record was in the 50 meter freestyle which was one of the team’s longer standing records which stood for 23 years and was set by Micah Storey in 1987 at long course Junior Olympics. Micah’s 32.50 is now broken, and Parker’s new record stands at 32.31 which is currently the 29th fastest time in the nation for all 10-year old boys.

A total of 35 TNT swimmers competed at the Bakersfield meet, and although the team’s improvement percentage was nowhere near their teammates who were competing at the Ventura meet during the same weekend, the team’s overall percentage was still a respectable 53%. Improving all events entered that were previously recorded with the team were Wesley Coles (2 of 2) and Ivan Villalvazo (1 of 1). Several individuals maintained high improvement percentages, most of who had swam 5 or more events. These swimmers included: Khloe McCarthy (86%), Megan Nino (86%), Christopher Nolan (86%), Breann Santos (75%), Kara Nino (71%), Preston Niayesh (70%), Jake Caminero (67%), Alonso Escobedo (67%), Kyle Grissom (67%), Jazmine Niayesh (67%), Savanah Nolan (67%), Chris Hansen (63%), Joshua Caminero (60%), Allyson Duffy (60%), Parker Giles (60%) and Taylor Shaw (60%). Additionally, three swimmers improved half of the events they entered: Shaan Heugly, Michael Mason and Athena Niayesh.

Among over 1400 swimmers who were entered at the 2010 Far Western Championships were three TNT swimmers who swam fast enough in the preliminary heats to get a second swim by making it into the final heat  and earning a medal. Sixteen year old Thomas Brown training in Tulare earned his second swim in the 15-16 boys 100 freestyle where he swam 49.42 in the preliminary heats and improved to a 49.37 in the final heat for a 6th place finish. Twelve year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia earned his second swim in the 11-12 boys 50 yard butterfly event where he swam 27.42 in the morning and improved to a 27.30 for a 6th place finish late that afternoon. Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder was our last finalist who swam a lifetime best of 33.30 in the morning for her 50 yard breaststroke, and then improved to another lifetime best of 32.88 in the final heat of the 11-12 girls 50 breaststroke and 7th place finish.

Congratulations to all swimmers who qualified for, and competed at, the Far Western Championships. The following are individual TNT Far Western swimmers and their highest placed event swam: Owen Ansel (11-12 50 back, 54th), Thomas Brown (15-16 100 free, 6th), Allyson Duffy (11-12 500 free, 51st), Parker Giles (9-10 50 free, 13th), Emily Goodbar (11-12 100 fly, 61st), Kyle Grissom (11-12 50 fly, 6th), Katelyn Herrera (11-12 200 fly, 29th), Dax Korenwinder (9-10 50 breast, 17th), Mallory Korenwinder (11-12 50 breast, 7th), Khloe McCarthy (11-12 400 IM, 63rd), Preston Niayesh (9-10 100 breast, 21st), Christopher Nolan (13-14 100 breast, 20th), Nathan Oskam (17-18 50 free, 11th). It is truly an accomplishment to even qualify to attend this level of an age group meet.

Ten year old Parker Giles led the team in record-breaking performances at 2010 Far Western Championships held at Morgan Hill. Overall six team records were broken, and three of them single handedly by Parker. Parker’s 29.01 in the 50 freestyle was fast enough for a 13th place finish and his nearly one second improvement was fast enough to break the team record formerly set as 29.68 by Jonathan Granada set only last year at the RCA meet in April. Parker went on to improve over six and a half seconds in his 100 freestyle to swim a 1:03.50 to break Jonathan’s team record by a half second. Jonathan’s 1:04.02 record was set last year at Far Westerns. Parker’s final record came in the 200 freestyle where his improvement of over 11 seconds brought his 2:28.89 that he swam at JO’s two months ago down to a 2:17.41 and once again a half second under Jonathan’s previous team record that was set in April of last year. His 2:17.41 is the 237th fastest time in the nation among 995 recorded swims to date.

Twelve year old Kyle Grissom, training in Visalia, previously set the team record at Junior Olympics two months ago with a 28.02, and his performance at Far Westerns dropped his team record in the 50 fly to a 27.30. His time is currently the 128th fastest time in the nation for all 12-year old boys. Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder set a new record in the 50 yard breaststroke with her time of 32.88. The previous record was set in 2002 at the winter AA meet held in Cerritos by Joclyn Ford who is currently swimming for Fresno Pacific. Mallory’s time is currently the 17th fastest time in the nation among all 11-year old girls, and a mere 1.6 seconds from the CCS record which is an 11-12 year old record. Our final team record was broken by two 10-under individuals in the 100 yard breaststroke event. Dax Korenwinder’s 1:26.73 broke the previous record that was set at 1:26.89 by Preston Niayesh at Junior Olympics; however, 9-year old Preston successfully defended his record at Far Westerns by improving his time by nearly a second to a 1:26.17 and maintaining his position as the all time fastest swim in the 9-10 boys 100 breaststroke event. Preston’s time is currently the 81st fastest time in the nation out of 1000 swims.

Three new Far Western cuts were made by two individuals who already were on the qualifying list for the prestigious age group meet. Sixteen year old Wesley Coles swam a 1:02.38 in the 100 meter butterfly event to not only make an addition Far Western cut (to bring his total to 8), but this is also his first qualifying time for the Speedo Grand Challenge to held at Irvine in May. Ten year old Parker Giles increased his Far Western cuts from four to six by qualifying in two additional events: 200 meter freestyle (2:45.13) and 100 meter free (1:15.20). Parker’s 100 meter freestyle time is approximately 1.5 seconds off of the team record.

Over half of our swimmers (26) now have newly recorded long course time with the team. The 24 remaining swimmers maintained a 68% improvement percentage with ten of them improving all events that were entered and swam. Congratulations go to perfect improvement performances by: Jake Caminero, Joshua Caminero, Wes Coles, Chris Hansen, Makenna Mason, Michael Mason, Madison McCarthy, Athena Niayesh, Chris Nolan and Savanah Nolan.
