Twelve year old Christopher Nolan sets the record-breaking pace while competing at the May Day Classic swim meet hosted by Bakersfield Swim Club during the first weekend of May. Christopher broke records in half of the events he entered at the meet. Three of the records set by him were previously at this very meet. His 200 breaststroke record goes from a 3:22.65 to a 3:04.85 at this meet. His 200 fly improves from a 2:54.37 from last year to a 2:41.83 this year, and the largest improvement came in the 400 IM where his pre-existing record of 6:12.83 is now a 4:48.69. His final record was in the 200 meter backstroke event where his 2:55.90 broke Jonathan Castellow’s 3:05.31 set three years ago in Bakersfield during May of 2006.

Christopher also maintained 100% improvement at the meet, and furthermore, achieved two new Age Group Invitational cuts for the 13-14 age group – a significant achievement since Christopher is still 12. Christopher’s new records in the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly events are fast enough to compete in Ventura in his new age group. Congratulations to a job well done.

Ten year old Jonathan Granada was a second record breaker at the meet. After becoming the owner of nine of the twelve short course team records, Jonathan breaks two long course team records in the 10-under division. Jonathan’s 1:14.74 in his 100 meter freestyle breaks Christopher Nolan’s previous record of 1:15.22 set at Merced in April of 2007, and Jonathan’s 40.63 breaks Jason Ricablanca’s team record of 41.58 in the 50 backstroke which was set at Junior Olympics back in 1992. Congratulations on a phenomenal age group.

Twelve year old Christopher Hansen is the final swimmer on the team to break a team record. Along with Christopher Nolan, his 3:14.90 in the 200 meter breaststroke was also faster than the 3:22.65 marked the previous team record.

There were 42 TNT swimmers who competed at the meet, and eight of them swam long course times with TNT for the first time. A warm welcome goes to Fayyaz and Hazim Ahamed who are training in Hanford, and who arrived from Waverly Area Aquatic Club in New York. Fayyaz finished in 1st place at the STSL East Meet 5 with a 36.27 in the 50 yard freestyle for 10-yer olds earlier this year. Erika Blaylock training in Visalia joins us for the first time with a 4th place finish in the 13-14 100 freestyle event. Eleven year old Callen Bruening swims his first long course meet with the team and also finishes 4th in the 11-12 50 fly with a 41.15. An Age Group Invite qualifier also from Visalia, swimming his first long course meet and winning both the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly events for the 11-12 boys is Greyson Canterbury. JD Garza finishes his college season with COS by returning from his Conference meet and swims his first long course meet in the 15-18 age group. Thirteen year old Landon Molin also swims his first events in an Olympic size pool and finishes sixth in the 100 backstroke event. Eleven year old Andrea Ross (who shows absolutely no fear on a steel bull) joins her older sister in the long course scene. Welcome to all new swimmers.

The remaining 34 swimmers all had pre-recorded events on the team. The overall team improvement percentage was a high 67% (over two-thirds of our swims resulted in improvements). Nine swimmers improved all events that were swum at the meet. Congratulations to: Malaine Garison, Makenzie Gilbert, Jonathan Granada, August Guerrero, Katelyn Herrera, Preston Niayesh, Kara Nino, Christopher Nolan, and Keshin Visahan for leading the team in improvements. Four of our swimmers improved 80-89% of their times, and these included Cori Hoover (88%), Madison Elick (86%), Sam Hansen (83%), and Megan Nino (83%), while those improving in the 70% range included Madison Gilbert (78%), Savanah Nolan (78%), Jimmy Koster (75%), Madison McCarthy (75%) and Nathan Rhea (71%). Sixty-percent improvements went to Joshua Caminero (67%), Thys Jacobi (67%), Breann Santos (67%), Emily Shandrew (67%) and Alex Hansen (63%). Two swimmers improved 50% of their times and they included Wesley Coles (50%) and Jazmine Niayesh (50%).

We have a block of ten rooms at our team hotel, Crowne Plaza in Ventura. I believe there are four rooms remaining. Reservations can be made on-line at the top of this page, or the hotel can be called directly at 877-227-6963. If calling directly, make sure to indicate that you are with TNT swimming. Let Phil Black know if the rooms are all taken, he will try and obtain additional rooms. If we wait too long, this will not be an option
