Despite relatively low team improvement percentages, 12-year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia still managed to break a team record in the 50 meter butterfly event while at the Western Zone Championships held in San Jose during the week of August 10-14. Kyle’s time of 30.51 was over a tenth of a second faster than the previous team record that he had set while at the Age Group Invitational in Ventura two months earlier. Kyle also became a finalist during his first Western Zone meet in that event, placing 6th among teams representing states such as Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii and Washington to name a few.

Only two additional TNT swimmers of our eight earned a second swim while at the meet. Twelve-year-old Mallory Korenwinder earned a second swim in the 100 meter breaststroke, finishing 6th with a time of 1:22.73. This is Mallory’s third consecutive Western Zone appearance. Veteran Western Zone swimmer Christopher Nolan competed in the 200 meter butterfly event where he earned a second swim with a lifetime best of 2:22.54 during the preliminary heats. Fourteen-year-old Christopher finished 7th in that event.

Time improvements were led by those who improved two of their events while at the meet. This includes Kyle Grissom who improved both his 100 freestyle during a lead-off swim in the relay (1:06.43) and his 50 butterfly (30.51), Dax Korenwinder who maintained the largest improvement of over 9 seconds in his 200 IM (3:06.15) and also improved his 50 backstroke while leading off the boys’ medley relay (42.23), Preston Niayesh who improved both his 50 butterfly (41.62) and his 100 freestyle (1:24.37), and Christopher Nolan who improved his 200 butterfly (2:22.54) and 800 freestyle (9:42.29). Additional fastest times came from Owen Ansel (31.50 in the 50 freestyle) and Mallory Korenwinder (37.50 in the 50 backstroke).

Congratulations to all eight TNT swimmers who competed at the meet including Owen Ansel, Parker Giles, Kyle Grissom, Dax Korenwinder, Mallory Korenwinder, Khloe McCarthy, Preston Niayesh and Christopher Nolan.

Forty nine TNT swimmers competed at the long course Junior Olympics held at Central High School in Fresno to place second behind the 73 member Clovis Swim Club. Tule Nation Tritons scored 3360 which was 145 points behind the Clovis lead of 3505 point. Success of our TNT swimmers was clearly reflected in individual events where TNT outscored all other teams by a margin of 355 points. Considering points generated only from individual events, TNT scored 2183, followed by Clovis (2538), Puma (1011) and Merced (995). Our total team points were led by our sole high point recipient, 14 year old Christopher Nolan. Chris outscored all 13-14 male swimmers with a score of 166 points with the next nearest swimmer scoring 135 points. Tule Nation Tritons had several individuals who were among the top 3 point getters at the meet, and these included:

 8 TEAM RECORDS BROKEN BY
GRISSOM, GILES, JIA, ESCOBEDO & KORENWINDER

2010jo024.JPG

A total of 8 team records were broken at the Junior Olympics by four different swimmers. Twelve year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia led the record-breaking performances by taking four of the eight team records while at the meet. Two of our team’s longest standing records were held by Micah Storey and included the 50 meter breaststroke and the 100 meter butterfly events. Micah swam a time of 38.54 in the 50 breaststroke at the Western Zone meet in 1989. Kyle’s 38.19 broke that record and is currently the 227th fastest time in the nation for all 12 year old boys in that event. Kyle also broke Micah’s swim of 1:11.13 in the 100 meter butterfly at the Junior Olympic meet in 1989.  Kyle’s new 100 butterfly record now stands at 1:10.36 and is the 168th fastest time in the nation. Last year Greyson Canterbury swam the 50 freestyle event at Junior Olympics and set the team record at 29.51. This year Kyle, at the very same meet claimed the record and it is now set at 29.46 and is the 376th fastest time in the nation. Kyle is currently training with Jason Ricablanca who was a former TNT swimmer who held several team records, including the 50 backstroke where he swam 35.76 at a Clovis meet in 1994. Kyle’s time of 33.87 at Junior Olympics has now set the new standard and is the 175th fastest time in the nation to date for all 12-year old boys. Kyle now owns five TNT team records.Another TNT swimmer who currently holds five team records is 10-year old Parker Giles. Parker had begun his record breaking performance early in the long course season, and continued it by setting two additional records at the Junior Olympics. Jason Ricablanca had set the team record for the 10-under boys 100 backstroke event with a 1:27.42 at Junior Olympics in 1992. Over this year’s 2010 Junior Olympics, a total of four swims by two TNT team mates were under the old standard. Parker Giles and Michael Jia swam times under the previous team record, and each swimmer did that twice, once in the preliminary heats, and once during finals. Michael Jia’s time of 1:25.46 (currently the 339th fastest time in the nation) along with Parker’s time of 1:23.87 (currently the 226th fastest 10-year old boys’ time) were both under the existing record. Parker now holds the new record. Parker had set the team record in the 100 meter freestyle with a 1:14.18 at the Bakersfield meet in May. His time of 1:13.11 swam at Junior Olympics now becomes the new standard and is currently the 335th fastest time in the nation. Ten year old Alonso Escobedo who arrived from Mexico only earlier this summer and is training in Hanford had performed at a level in the 200 IM with a time of 3:05.13 and was fast enough to break the pre-existing record of 3:05.81 that was set by Parker Giles in Clovis in May of this year. Alonso’s time is currently the 475th fastest time in the nation among all 10-yaer old boys. Alonso has become a valuable asset on the team, and has successfully made his presence known, not only on TNT, but within CCS, based on his performance. Our final record breaking performance came from 12-year old Mallory Korenwinder who swam 1:20.48 in the 100 meter breaststroke event, and this time is currently the 33rd fastest time in the nation for all 12 year old girls. Mallory had missed the team record by three-tenths of a second last year as an 11-year old while at the Western Zone meet in Hawaii with a time (1:21.65) that became one of the top 10 long course times swam in the nation among all 11-year old girls. This year, Mallory’s time of 1:20.48 was nearly a second under Joclyn Ford’s record of 1:21.39 that was set at Junior Olympics in 2002.

71% TEAM IMPROVEMENT RATE

2010jo026.JPG

Not only was the performance related to placing and points impressive, but the degree of improvement was also notable. Forty-six of our 49 swimmers entered into the meet have pre-recorded long course times with the club and entered into individual events. These 46 swimmers improved 71% of all individual events entered. Eleven of these swimmers improved all events, thereby maintaining a perfect 100% improvement rate.

A total of 49 swimmers improved at least half of their times. These included:Alonso Escobedo (89%), Mallory Korenwinder (89%), Chris Nolan (89%), Bre Abell (88%), Kyle Grissom (88%), James Koster (86%), Luke Dignan (83%), Ana Porchia (80%), Taylor Shaw (80%), Emily Goodbar (78%), Wesley Coles (75%), Alex Hansen (75%), Madison McCarthy (75%), Colin Landweer (71%), Savanah Nolan (71%), Lilliana Hodges (67%), Michael Mason (67%), Nathan Rhea (67%), Chris Hansen (63%), Preston Niayesh (63%), Priscilla Niayesh (60%), Parker Giles (56%), Katelyn Herrera (56%), Dax Korenwinder (56%), Makenna Mason (56%), Delanie Dignan (50%), Allyson Duffy (50%) and Justin Lopez-Lamb (50%).

Coach Patrick Ota who currently trains swimmers in the Selma program as well as coaches the Fresno Pacific college program has been voted 2010 Central California Swimming Senior Coach of the Year. In addition to being a successful senior swimmer himself, he now has helped a number of swimmers develop to the National and Olympic Trial levels of competition. This week, Pat is accompanying swimmers who he trains to USA Swimming Nationals meet held in Irvine, CA. Undoubtedly, once the Olympic Trial time standards are published, he will have qualifiers for the meet which will take place two years from now.

Shauna Rhea is one of several parents in Tulare who are instrumental in the operation of the program there. Along with other parents, she has taken on the responsibility of coordinating officiating efforts among our various groups. At the CCS level, Shauna has taken on the responsibility of Records Chair and is instrumental at ensuring that swimmers across Central California Swimming receive the recognition they deserve.

Congratulations to both Patrick and Shauna for the recognition that is so well deserved.

Eleven TNT swimmers traveled to San Luis Obispo during the 4th of July weekend to compete at the 2010 Firecracker Invitational that followed the Age Group Invitational meet in Ventura. This meet recognizes one male and one female swimmer per age division who had accumulated the fastest combined times in each 50 meter event. Each of these individuals are awarded the King (for the male) and Queen (for the female) awards during the third day of the meet. This year, 8-year old Ana Porchia  and 9-year old Preston Niayesh became the recipients for their respective age groups. This was the second year in a row for Preston. Congratulations to both swimmers.

slo2-2010.JPG

Ana Porchia swam uncontested within her division winning all four events that she had entered in the meet. Ten year old Dax Korenwinder maintained top-3 finishes within his respective divisions  in all events entered, winning four of his eight events. Other event champions included Mallory Korenwinder, Khloe McCarthy, Madison McCarthy, Priscilla Niayesh, and Preston Niayesh.

slo3-2010.JPG

The team’s 46% improvement percentage was led by Danielle Albright who improved all four events for a 100% improvemetn rate, and she was followed by Jakob Koorey who maintained the next highest improvement rate at 83%. Madison McCarthy was also in the 80% improvement range. Three additional swimmers maintained improvemnt percentages above the 50% mark: Khloe McCarthy (75%), Ana Porchia (75%) and Mallory Korenwinder (67%).

Both Alonso Escobedo’s (training in Hanford) time of 40.23 and Parker Giles’s 39.24 in the 50 meter backstroke were faster than the team’s previous record of 40.46 for the 10-under boys. The previous record was set by Parker while at the Clovis meet in May of this year. Alonso’s 40.23 is currently the 322nd fastest time in the nation for all 10 year old boys, while Parker’s 39.24 is now the 189th fastest. Our other record breaking performance came from 12-year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia. Kyle’s 30.66 in the 50 meter butterfly was fast enough for a second place finish and also broke his own pre-existing record of 31.51 that he set at the Clovis meet in May. Kyle’s new personal best of 30.66 is currently the 51st fastest time nationally for all 12 year old boys.

Fifteen of our 23 swimmers swam fast enough to score at the meet, placing either among the top 8 or the next 8 (9th – 16th). Our seven Top-8 finishers included Owen Ansel (6th – 50 breast), Hannah Giles (6th-50 free), Parker Giles (2nd-50 free, 3rd-50 breast, 4th-50 back; 4th-100 breast), Kyle Grissom (2nd-50 fly; 4th-50 breast; 7th-100 fly), Dax Korenwinder (5th-50 breast), Mallory Korenwinder (2nd-50 breast; 3rd-100 breast), and Mia Newkirk (7th-50free). Individuals who placed 9th – 16th also scored at the meet, and these included the following 14 swimmers (listed along with their top-16 place finish): Allyson Duffy (16th), Madison Ekizian (11th), Alonso Escobedo (9th, 9th, 9th, 10th, 13th & 15th), Hannah Giles (16th), Parker Giles (12th & 14th), Kyle Grissom (14th & 14th), Katelyn Herrera (15th), Dax Korenwinder (11th), Mallory Korenwinder (16th & 16th), Colin Landweer (15th), Michael Mason (13th, 14th & 15th), Mia Newkirk (10th, 11th, 13th, & 14th), Preston Niayesh (10th & 11th), and Chris Nolan (11th, 14th, 14th, & 15th).

Twenty three TNT swimmers who traveled to Ventura to compete at this year’s June Age Group Invitational maintained a team improvement percentage of 47%. Mia Newkirk along with Ethan Torosian both improved 100% of the times they swam at the meet. Khloe McCarthy, swimming the most events at the meet, maintained the third highest improvement percentage at 86%, followed by Alonso Escobedo (83%), Kyle Grissom (83%) and Michael Mason (67%). Six additional swimmers improved half of their times at the meet, and these included: Madison Ekizian, Parker Giles, Katelyn Herrera, Makenna Mason, and Christopher Nolan.

Bobby Yribarren training in Selma along with Nathan Rhea earned a combined three final swims while at the Mission Viejo Swim Meet of Champions held during the third weekend of June. Our five TNT swimmers competed alongside swimmers representing club and collegiate teams both from across the United States and countries such as Korea, Japan and Canada.

Bobby Yriabarren swam to the highest place finish of any TNT swimmer on the team with a consolation finish of 16th in the 200 meter butterfly event, and a time of 2:12.93. Nathan Rhea was our only other finalist, swimming fast enough to earn two second swims in the bonus heat for each of the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Nathan’s 2:34.55 in the preliminary heats for the 200 meter breaststroke event was fast enough for a 17th place seed into the bonus final heat. His 1:12.11 for the 100 meter breaststroke earned a 24th place finish in that event. Additionally, Nathan set a new team record in the 800 meter freestyle event with a 8:56.53, shaving just under former team record holder Sam Hansen’s time of 8:57.10 that was set last year at the Junior Olympics.

Time improvements were led by Nathan Rhea who improved 5 of 7 events, Colin Landweer, improving 2 of 3, and Bobby Yribarren who also improved 2 of 3 events. An additional time improvement came from Jordan Morillo improving her 200 IM time (2:35.52), and Sam Hansen in the 100 meter freestyle (59.26) as he earned his spot on the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. This year, Wesley Coles joined Nathan Rhea, Colin Landweer and Sam Hansen as first-time qualifiers to the meet.

Five senior swimmers traveled to Irvine and competed among teams representing Cal Berkley, USC, Stanford, University of Texas, UNLV and others. Bobby Yribarren achieved the highest place of any TNT swimmer competing at the Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine placing 17th in the 1500 freestyle. His time of 17:00.58 was approximately 5 seconds under Sam Hansen’s previous team record of 17:05.35 which was set at long course Junior Olympics last year.  Another highlight heat involved Sam Hansen being circle seeded in the 1500 freestyle with USA National Team member representing Stanford, Chad LaTourette.

Perfect improvements were established by both Wesley Coles who swam two new Sectional cuts (100 meter fly – 1:00.58 and 100 free – 56.98) and Colin Landweer who also established long course Sectional cuts in two events (400 free – 4:24.56 & 100 free – 56.44). Hannah Giles competed in three events and improved her 100 meter freestyle event (1:04.08).

After breaking three short course team records while at FarWesterns last month, Parker Giles returns to the long course season and breaks two additional 10-under team records while at the Bakersfield meet during the first weekend of May. The 100 meter freestyle record was set last year at this same meet in Bakersfield by Jonathan Granada as 1:14.74. Parker has now established the record at 1:14.18. Parker’s second record was in the 50 meter freestyle which was one of the team’s longer standing records which stood for 23 years and was set by Micah Storey in 1987 at long course Junior Olympics. Micah’s 32.50 is now broken, and Parker’s new record stands at 32.31 which is currently the 29th fastest time in the nation for all 10-year old boys.

A total of 35 TNT swimmers competed at the Bakersfield meet, and although the team’s improvement percentage was nowhere near their teammates who were competing at the Ventura meet during the same weekend, the team’s overall percentage was still a respectable 53%. Improving all events entered that were previously recorded with the team were Wesley Coles (2 of 2) and Ivan Villalvazo (1 of 1). Several individuals maintained high improvement percentages, most of who had swam 5 or more events. These swimmers included: Khloe McCarthy (86%), Megan Nino (86%), Christopher Nolan (86%), Breann Santos (75%), Kara Nino (71%), Preston Niayesh (70%), Jake Caminero (67%), Alonso Escobedo (67%), Kyle Grissom (67%), Jazmine Niayesh (67%), Savanah Nolan (67%), Chris Hansen (63%), Joshua Caminero (60%), Allyson Duffy (60%), Parker Giles (60%) and Taylor Shaw (60%).
