Sixteen year old Thomas Brown and fifteen year old Colin Landweer establish their first Sectional qualifying times while at the Tulare meet during the first weekend of December. Colin’s determined swim in the 200 yard freestyle earned him a 1:48.63 and was fast enough to slip just under the 1:48.79 cut. Thomas Brown’s sprint in the 50 yard freestyle ended with a time of 22.56 which was also fast enough for both the Long Beach Grand Prix cut of 22.89 and the Sectional cut of 22.59. Colin and Thomas will join current qualifiers who have expressed intent to compete at Sectionals, and these include Nathan Rhea, Sam Hansen, Josh Tabers and Hannah Giles. Current Grand Prix qualifiers include Katherine Bristow, Sam Hansen, Nathan Rhea, Thomas Brown, Josh Tabers and Bobby Yribarren. These swimmers may compete at the Grand Prix meet which is currently scheduled to include swimmers such as Michael Phelps, Matt Grievers and Katie Hoff.

Twelve year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia set a new team record in the 11-12 boys 50 yard butterfly event. Kyle’s time of 28.25 broke a record that was set in 1994 by Jason Ricablanca at the AA meet in Cerritos. Kyle now holds three of the top four times on the team in the event. An additional accomplishment was Kyle’s 1:04.03 in the 100 butterfly, which was his second Western Zone qualifying time for next year’s Zone meet which will be held in San Jose during August.

Three hundred and thirty seven swimmers representing fourteen swim teams throughout Central California Swimming converged to compete in Tulare during the first weekend of December. The 100 swimmers of Tule Nation Tritons 1,479.5 points outscored all other teams, with Clovis Swim Club’s 1,005 points coming in second. The third place team was Fresno Dolphins Swim Team with 679 points.

Tule Nation Tritons had three swimmers who received high point awards. Six year old Danielle Albright swam unchallenged as she won all 8 events she swam in the 6-under division (50 free, 25 fly, 25 back, 50 breast, 50 back, 25 free, 25 breast & 100 free) thereby outscoring all other 6-under female swimmers at the meet, while JD Koster received the high point award for all 7-8 year old boys by a 79-73 margin over the runner up. Our final high point recipient was Cori Hoover who outscored all female swimmers 15 years and older at the meet.

Our other undefeated swimmer was Christopher Nolan who, while on the bottom of the 13-14 age group, won all three events he swam (200 breast, 100 breast & 500 free). Event champions included Katherine Bristow (100 back & 50 free), Thomas Brown (50 free & 100 free), Wesley Coles (100 fly), Madison Elick (1650 free), Kyle Grissom (50 fly & 100 fly), Chris Hansen (100 breast & 500 free), Sam Hansen (100 breast), Katelyn Herrera (200 fly), Mallory Korenwinder (200 breast & 50 breast), JD Koster (50 free, 100 IM, 25 back, 50 breast, 50 fly, 25 free, 25 breast & 100 free), Josh Koster (100 free), Colin Landweer (200 free), Conor Martin (1650 free), Nathan Rhea (200 free, 100 back & 200 IM0, and Kayla Ross (100 back).

The team’s 53% improvement percentage included 80 swimmers who had previously recorded times in events that are 50 yards or longer. Eighteen of these swimmers improved all events they swam. Perfect improvements came from: Kaleigh Botill, Thomas Brown, Sydnie Burleson, Jake Caminero, Trevor De Leeuw, Elaine Draper, Cheyenne Droney, Cristo Droney, Madison Droney, Olivia Fernandes, Jacob Harms, Michael Mason, Aneesha Nagra, Christopher Nolan, Hannah Parker, Nathan Rhea, Zachary Rust and Ivan Villalvazo.

Still11-year-old Mallory Korenwinder along with coach Angela Martinho were awarded an interview with the local paper based on Mallory’s national 7th place ranking for all 11-year-olds during this past long course ranking cycle. Mallory ranked 7th in not only one event, but both long course breaststroke events (50 meter and 100 meter breaststrokes). She became one of only two swimmers between the ages of 11 and 16 in all of Central California Swimming to rank among the top 10 in the nation. Samantha Goates who is currently competing for Louisiana State University (LSU) was our other swimmer who ranked among the top 10 in the nation, and her 1:57.52 was fast enough to rank 9th among all 18 year olds in the nation and is an NCAA “B” cut.

Sixty-one attached TNT swimmers along with four unattached swimmers traveled to compete at the San Luis Obispo Gobbler meet during the weekend before Thanksgiving. Three swimmers entered and swam the maximum allowable 11 events, and these swimmers included Chris Hansen of Tulare, Parker Giles of Hanford and Dax Korenwinder of Tulare. Chris Hansen led this group in improvements by improving 10 out of his 11 events for a 91% improvement rate. Chris maintained an improvement of nearly five seconds per event with the largest improvement being nearly 14 seconds in the 200 yard breaststroke event. Chris Hansen’s time of 2:42.23 breaks the previous team’s record for 11-12 boys that was set at the beginning of this year by Chris Nolan also from Tulare who swam a 2:44.88 while competing at the All Star Q meet in January.

Of our 65 swimmers, 53 of them had times in 50 yard events or longer that were previously recorded on the team. The overall team improvement percentage was 57% which is above the 50% target considered a successful meet in terms of improvement percentages. This 57% team improvement rate was led by eight swimmers who improved all events entered. Swimmers who maintained a 100% improvement rate included: Bre Abel of Selma and sister Tristian Abel, Jake Caminero of Tulare, Cheyenne Droney of Visalia, Thys Jacobi of Tulare, Joe Koster of Visalia, Madison McCarthy of Tulare and Mia Newkirk of Hanford.

San Luis Obispo awarded 12-under swimmers in each Blue, Red and White divisions. Twenty-four of our swimmers earned first place finishes within one of these three divisions, or fist place in 13-over or Open divisions. Event champions for their respective divisions included Bre Abel (age 13: 100 fly), Fayyaz Ahamed (age 10: 100 fly, 50 back, 50 free & 50 fly), Allyson Duffy (age 11: 100 IM), Madison Ekizian (age 12: 100 free), Skylar Ford (age 7: 25 breast, 25 free & 25 fly), Madison Gilbert (age 13: 100 fly), Parker Giles (age 10: 200 free & 50 breast), Kyle Grissom (age 11: 50 fly), Alex Hansen (age 14: 200 free), Chris Hansen (age 12: 100 free, 100 IM, 200 IM, 100 breast & 50 fly), Thys Jacobi (age 9: 50 breast, 50 back, 100 IM & 50 free), Scott Jordan (age 14: 100 back), Dax Korenwinder (age 9: 100 breast), Jacqui Koster (age 10: 50 back), JD Koster (age 8: 50 breast, 100 breast), Jimmy Koster (age 12: 50 breast & 100 breast), Colin Landweer (age 15: 100 free), Conor Martin (age 13: 100 breast & 100 back), Makenna Mason (age 11: 100 fly), Mia Newkirk (age 11: 50 breast & 50 back), Preston Niayesh (age 9: 100 IM), Megan Nino (age 13: 100 breast), JT Scott (age 12: 200 IM) and Katherine Sullivan (age 7: 25 back).

An additional highlight of the meet was the daring performance of fourteen year old Alex Hansen who swam 500 yards butterfly with a time of 6:27.55 while swimming among the freestylers in the 500 freestyle event.

Our remaining 12 swimmers swam 25 yard events, or have swam times that are now newly recorded with our team. Annually USA Swimming recognizes swimmers who have achieved a national ranking among the top ten for both the short course and long course seasons for swimmers who are eleven years old to eighteen years old. All times swam across the nation are housed in a central database allowing the tracking and ranking of times. USA Swimming has recently published their final ranking.

Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder maintained her 7th place ranking among all 11 year old female swimmers across the nation in both the 50 meter (36.94) and 100 meter (1:21w.65) breaststroke events. She is one of only two CCS swimmers of any age between 11 and 18 who maintains a top 10 ranking in long course.

Our second swimmer to rank among the top 10 nationally is currently swimming for Louisiana State University (LSU) and holds the 9th fastest time in the nation for all 18 year old female swimmers. Samantha Goates swam a 1:57.52 in the 200 backstroke last November which is a time that is also eligible for the 2009 Division 1 NCAA B cut.
