Twenty-three TNT swimmers competed at the Merced long course meet during the third weekend of April. Ten year old Preston Niayesh led our team in record breaking performances setting three new team records, all of which are new records for him. Preston began with the 50 meter breaststroke with a time of 43.01, shaving under one of our longest standing records set by Dax Brott as 43.29 during 1987 while competing in Bakersfield. Preston’s time currently ranks 5th nationally for all 10-yaer old boys in the event early in this long course season. Currently the fastest time in the nation for a 10-year old boy is 41.48. Preston went on to shatter the team’s 100 breaststroke record with a time of 1:31.38 that also currently stands among the top 5 times in the nation. The current top time in the nation is 1:28.17. Dax Brott’s previous team record set in Bakersfield in 1987 was 1:35.43. Finally, Preston’s time of 3:04.78 went under Alonso Escobedo’s 200 IM team record that was set as 3:05.13 at Junior Olympics last summer. Early long course national rankings would place Preston’s time as the 38th fastest in the nation.

Striving for her second Sectional cut, 12-year old Mallory Korenwinder swam 1:19.90 in the 100 meter breaststroke, thereby improving her previous team record of 1:20.48 set last year at Junior Olympics. A former nationally ranked swimmer at age 10, Mallory’s time currently ranks 8th in the nation for all 12 year old girls.

Tule Nation Triton swimmers took home five High Point awards from Merced. Preston Niayesh, who was the leader in team record-breaking performances, was also our sole swimmer who competed uncontested, winning all 10 of 10 events he had entered. Preston thereby became the 10-under boy High Point winner. Mallory Korenwinder won 3 of her 10 events and scored enough points to edge out teammate Amber Khieralla by one point in what was the most competitive age group (11-12 girls) at the meet. Katelyin Herrera was an event champion in 5 of her 10 events, and the success granted her the High Point award for the 13-14 girls division, and her counterpart, Chris Noaln, was the event champion in six of his eight events, thereby becoming the High Point recipient in the 13-14 boys division.

 4-11-merced2a.JPG 4-11-merced2b.JPG

Improvement rates were led by the perfect performances (100% improvement) of Danielle Albright (improved 7 of 7 events), Khloe McCarthy (improved 8 of 8) and Madison McCarthy (improved 8 of 8). Those improving 50% or more of their times included Preston Niayesh (90%), Allyson Duffy (89%), Chris Hansen (83%), Mallory Korenwinder (80%), Katherine Sullivan (80%), Athena Niayesh (75%), Priscilla Niayesh (67%), Mia Newkirk (63%), and Chris Nolan (63%).

Although the 48 member TNT team outscored Clovis during individual events going into the final day (TNT 1,491 to Clovis 1,484), the 87 athletes of Clovis became a factor in relays that brought the 7 point TNT advantage from individual events after day 2, to an overall team point difference of 1,100 by the end of the 3-day meet.Tule Nation Triton swimmers placed 2nd behind Clovis Swim Club. The two teams were among 26 teams that competed at the 2011 Short Course Junior Olympic Championships held at Clovis North during the second weekend of March. Tritons fell 59 points short of Clovis’s 2,427 point total resulting from individual events alone. Our 2,368 points from individual events were led by high point recipients Jackson Huckabay (113 points by 8-year old male training in Selma with Gary Ota), 10-under Dax Korewnwinder (134 points), 11-12 Amber Khieralla (134 points by Bakersfield swimmer developed by Jerry and Carol Hill), and 13-14 year old Christopher Nolan (134 points), along with runner-up high point swimmers: Priscilla Niayesh (8-under), Ian Belflower (8-under from Bakersfield) and Mallory Korenwinder (11-12).

20 TEAM AND 4 CCS RECORDS BROKEN AT JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Amber Khieralla, whose sound foundation in swimming is a product of Bakersfield coaches Jerry and Carol Hill, set 3 new team records in the 11-12 girl’s age group beginning with the 100 backstroke. Her 1:01.79 swam at Junior Olympics is under the 1:01.88 swam by Samantha Goates at AA’s in

Cerritos in 2002. Samantha is currently attending the Division 1 NCAA meet representing LSU. Amber’s time is the 59th fastest time in the nation for all 12-year old girls. Amber’s 27.93 in the 50 fly was one among two 11-12 girl swims in the event that went under Jill Edminster’s team record of 28.97 that was set at Far Westerns in 1992. Her time ranks 75th fastest in the nation for the year. Amber’s final team record of 28.45 in the 50 backstroke not only broke Samantha Goates record of 28.84 set  at AA’s in Cerritos in 2002, but also broke the CCS record of 28.51 that was set by Sybil Smith back in 1991. Currently Amber holds the 35th fastest time for the event in the nation. Congratulations to Amber, as well as to coaches Jerry and Carol Hill.Although he and Preston Niayesh both swam under the pre-existing team record, ten year old Dax Korenwinder successfully defended his own team record in the 100 breaststroke event by swimming 1:19.27, which was well under his previous record of 1:22.21 set at the Selma pool this past September. His time is the 48th fastest in the nation. Both boys swam under the 50 breaststroke team record that was set by Alonso Escobedo at the Arizona meet last December. Dax’s 37.09 was nearly a half second under the 37.55 record and is the 89th fastest nationally recorded time. Mallory Korenwinder tripled up record-breaking performances by setting the 200 IM record as a 2:18.64 (149th nationally for all 12-year old girls) which is under Megan Eppler’s 2:19.32 that was swam at Far Westerns in 2004. Joclyn Ford’s 1:11.68 record set at AA’s in 2002 fell to Mallory’s 1:09.96 (38th nationally), and finally, Mallory reestablished her 50 breaststroke record from a 32.88 set at Far Westerns last year, to a 32.69 (64th nationally).

Christopher Nolan was our final individual to swim away with team records, and he had set two beginning with his time of 1:57.96 in the 200 fly (34th nationally for ally 13-year old boys) which was well under Kohlton Norys’s 2:01.28 set in 2004 at Junior Olympics. Kohlton also set the 100 fly record as 54.91 in 2003 at Winter Invite, and Chris now reset that mark to 54.75 (101st nationally).

10 RELAY RECORDS BROKEN

2011-sc-jo3.JPG

Twenty-eight TNT relays were entered in the meet for our second place efforts, and of those relays, 10 relay teams broke existing team records. In addition, three 11-12 girl records were also CCS records. Our 11-12 girls 200 medley relay of Amber Khieralla, Mallory Korenwinder, Mia Newkirk and Allyson Duffy swam 1:56.46 in the 200 Medley Relay which at the time was the 23rd fastest relay time in the nation for all 11-12 girls. Record breaking relay performances were:

Age Group Relay Time Swimmers
8-U girls 100 free 1:07.51 Alex Roberts, Danielle Albright, Jazmine Niayesh, Paige Coddington
8-U girls 100 medley 1:16.73 Alex Roberts, Danielle Albright, Jazmine Niayesh, Annlyn Haworth

The top 3 High Point recipients for each gender and age group at the Last Chance meet were recognized, and TNT swimmers swam away with 2 of the 3 awards in many of the divisions. The 6-udner boy’s division was led by high point winner Ian Belfower of Bakersfield and runner-up Jacye Ford of Visalia. The 7-8 girls division was led by Danielle Albright and 3rd place recipient Alex Roberts training with Bill, while on the boy’s side Jackson Huckabay of Selma led all 7-8 boys followed by runner-up Peyton Costa. The 9-10 boy’s division was led by Visalia swimmer JD Koster followed by 2nd place finisher Jonas Huckabay of Selma, while the 11-12 girls were led by Mia Newkirk and 3rd place finisher Allyson Duffy. Bill Freeman’s swimmer Conor Martin swam away with the honors in the 13-14 boy’s division, while Matlyn Morris, who also trains with Bill, took home the top spot for the 15-over girls. The 15-over boy division TNT recipients were runner-up Sam Hanson followed by 3rd highest point-getter Nathan Rhea.

GOODBAR, KOOREY, KOSTER & MARTIN LEAD IMPROVEMENT AT LAST CHANCE

Sixty-one TNT swimmers were among approximately 350 who competed at the Last Chance meet in Tulare during the last weekend of February. Fifty-seven of our swimmers had previously recorded times with the team, and of those 18 swam away with perfect improvement rates. The overall improvement was 68%. Jacob Koorey was our only swimmer among the 100% list who swam a total of 10 events, nine of them previously recorded, and improved 9 of 9. JD Koster of Visalia also swam a heavy schedule of events, improving all 9 of 9 events that he had entered. Jacob Goodbar of Selma and Conor Martin training with Bill Freeman were our other two swimmers who swam and improved 6 or more events each – Jacob with 7, and Conor with 6.

A warm welcome to the team goes to LaurenBinaski, Jeanette Ewy, Daniel Magaree, and Adam Simonian who swam events that are newly recorded with the team.

Congratulations to all swimmers who improved, and especially to those who maintained a 100% improvement rate:

Allyson Duffy and Mallory Korenwinder were 2 of our 14 TNT swimmers who competed at the first annual Jim Turner Memorial trials and finals senior meet held in Bakersfield over the February 11th-13th weekend. In a friendly-environment meet that hosted only about fifty swimmers total, performances by Allyson Duffy and Mallory Korenwinder rose to a level that warranted setting new team records in the 11-12 age group. Allyson had set the 1650 freestyle record at the Tulare meet this past December, and now only two months later, resets the record at 18:33.20 thereby qualifying for the Senior Group in Tulare. Her time currently ranks 39th in the nation for all 12-year old female swimmers. Mallory Korenwinder swam to a 1st place finish in the 200 breaststroke event with a time of 2:33.26 which was a second and a half under the preexisting team record previously set by Joclyn Ford at Vacaville in 2002. Mallory’s time currently ranks as the 40th fastest time in the nation for all 12-year old girls.

Event champions were led by three of our swimmers who tripled up in their wins: Wesley Coles who won the 200 fly (1:58.09), 100 breast (1:03.38) and 100 fly (52.83) events; Sam Hansen won the 200 breast (2:15.17), 500 free (5:07.47) and 400 IM (4:21.04); and Colin Landweer who won the 100 back (56.88), 100 free (49.26) and 50 free (22.60). Other event champions included Katelyn Herrera (200 fly – 2:24.77), Mallory Korenwinder (200 breast), and Chris Nolan (1650 free – 17:49.67).

Chelsea Arroyo along with Emily Lehrman led the team in improvement percentages, each improving all their events that were previously recorded with the team. Those improving 50% or more of their times included: Khloe McCarthy (80%), Chris Nolan (80%), Mallory Korenwinder (60%), and Allyson Duffy (57%).

The small size of the meet allowed our athletes the opportunity to earn second swims. Besides those previously listed, Mia Newkirk, Hannah Giles, Emily Goodbar and Kyle Grissom each earned second swims at the meet.

Congratulations to all.

USA Swimming has published the USA World University Games roster that includes both current and past NCAA champions to lead a field of 47 student-athletes this coming summer. The World University Games is an international college-level competition that involves multiple sports, and takes place every two yeas.

The USA National Championships held in Irvine this past summer was the meet that USA Swimming used to select the USA team for three subsequent international levels of competition. The first team that was to be selected was the Pan Pacific Team for the USA, and this meet took place later in the summer. The Short Course World Championship team was also selected, and that meet took place late last year. The final team to be selected was the World University Games team.

Kohlton Norys will travel to Shenzhen, China during the August 14-19 week along with our fastest student athletes from across the United States and compete against the top college athletes from other countries. Although Kohlton had set the National Age Group record in the 100 backstroke and was the 2009 Division 1 NCAA Champion also in the 100 backstroke, his breath of ability qualified him for the World University Games in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

Congratulations to our very own home-grown World University Games qualifier.

Twelve year old Allyson Duffy sets her second team record within two months, first in the 1650 freestyle during the Tulare meet in December, and now in the 500 freestyle during All Stars that were held in Selma earlier this month. Allyson improved nearly five seconds in this early-season meet to drop from a 5:26.75 to 5:21.55 breaking Megan Eppler’s record that was set as 5:22.89 in 2004 while competing at Far Westerns.  Allyson’s time is currently the 63rd fastest time in the nation for all 12-year old girls.

team-cheer.JPG

Two TNT swimmers were event champions while at the meet, and Amber Khieralla the point contribution with three individual wins in the 11-12 girls division: 200 back (2:17.20), 50 free (26.60) and 100 back (1:04.64). Our other event champion came from 10-year old Preston Niayesh whose time improvement in the 50 breaststroke was fast enough for the win in that event (38.45).

Thirteen fourteen year old Ethan Torosian was our sole swimmer who improved all events that were swam at the meet, and he did so in improvements by sizable margins despite the cool mornings. Ethan improved over seven seconds in both his 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, and over two seconds in his 50 free. Preson Niayesh maintained our next highest improvement at 67% followed by 57% improvements by Emily Goodbar and Amber Khieralla. Swimmers who improved half of their times include Bre Abell, Janessa Bringe and Allyson Duffy.

Other swimmers who well represented TNT on the All Star team included: Luke Dignan, Skylar Ford, Mia Newkirk and Satoshi Shinkawa.

Nine of twenty-four TNT swimmers (nearly 38%) who had competed at the All Star Qualifying Meet at Central High School in Fresno may have performed well enough to earn a spot on the Central California Swimming All Star team. Congratulations go to 10-under swimmers Skylar Ford, Janessa Bringe, Preston Niayesh, and Satoshi Shinkawa; 11-12 swimmers Mia Newkirk, Allyson Duffy and Luke Dignan; and 13-14 swimmers Bre Abell and Emily Goodbar.

The All Star meet is scheduled to take place during the 22nd-23rd weekend at Selma High School, to be led by Central California Swimming Age Group Chair, and our very own coach Pat Ota, along with Head All Star Coach, and again our very own coach Gary Ota.

  • The 10-under coach is anticipated to be Ben Britten (former Visalia swimmer now coaching Clovis)
  • The 11-12 coach is anticipated to be Caroline Reynaud (coach of Fig Garden)
  • The 13-14 coach is anticipated to be our own Coach Gary Ota
Best of luck to the Central California team as they take on San Diego Imperial and Sierra Nevada All Star Teams.

Two of five TNT swimmers competed at the Southern California Swimming Senior Meet during the third weekend of January in 80 degree Long Beach Belmont Olympic Swim Plaza. Sam Hansen led the group in earning second swims in two of his five events. Sam’s 2:14.24 was the sole point for TNT as he swam into the consolation final heat in that event. His 4:18.44 was fast enough for a C-final swim where he moved from 24th place to 21st. Colin Landweer was our other finalist who swam the 50 freestyle in 22.11 earning a C-final swim in that event.

Our remaining three swimmers each improved one event at the meet: Hannah Giles in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.62), Mallory Korenwinder in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.30), and Nathan Rhea in the 50 freestyle (23.70).

Seven TNT swimmers competed at short course Sectionals in Long Beach during the 5-day meet over the third weekend of December. Four of those swimmers swam a total of 11 events that were under a team record prior to the start of the meet. Each swimmer was allowed no more than 6 individual events, and Sam Hansen swam under preexisting team records in four of his six events (1650 free – 16:36.11; 200 breast – 2:09.46; 1000 free – 9:53.39 and 100 breast – 1:00.18). Sam’s 200 breaststroke time was fast enough to qualify for travel funding through CCS, a time that is based on a past Junior National time standard. His time currently ranks 156th in the nation among all 18-year old male swimmers. His 1650 free currently ranks 182nd and his 100 breast is 289th. The 1000 free time is established as his highest ranking at 134th. Colin Landweer swam faster than a preexisting team record in the 200 IM with a time that ranks 450th nationally among all 16 year olds (1:59.42) and he had established several milestone times (50 free – 21.72; 100 free – 47.50 & 200 free – 1:43.86) that put him well within range for Santa Clara International coming up next summer (2010 cuts: 50 free – 21.69; 100 free – 47.29 & 200 free – 1:42.29). Nathan Rhea succeeded in earning a second swim in the 400 IM with a time of 4:05.39 and subsequently established a time that that ranks 35th in the nation among all 15-year old boys. Nathan Joined Sam in achieving a CCS funding standard, and also achieved a 2010 Santa Clara time standard. Although the 400 IM was a definite highlight, Nathan also swam under the team record in both the 200 IM (1:57.42 – nationally ranked 103rd) and the 1000 freestyle (9:47.98 – nationally ranked 93rd). Bobby Yribarren, training with Coach Pat Ota in Selma and with Fresno Pacific, continued his record-breaking performances which began last year at the Holiday Festival in Arizona. Bobby became the only TNT swimmer to score in three events by swimming to finals in the 1650 free (10th – 16:00.41), 500 free (13th – 4:35.51) and 1000 free (7th – 9:32.46 [288). Bobby’s 1000 freestyle is currently the 288th fastest time in the nation despite any age, although it is the 2nd fastest in the nation for all 25 year old male swimmers. Bobby established new team records in these same three events.

bob-2010-sc-sectionals.JPG

Thomas Brown had an exceptional Terrapin meet and nearly matched his performance in the 50 freestyle (22.07) while at Sectionals. He improved his 100 butterfly event (57.35) that swam in time trials. Similar to Colin, Thomas’s fastest 50 freestyle (21.77) from the Terrapin meet is near both the Santa Clara (21.69 in 2010) and Short Course Junior National (21.29 in 2010) cuts. Thomas, along with Wesley Coles and Colin Landweer made their second appearance at short course Sectionals in Long Beach. Wesley had a near perfect meet improving his 200 fly (1:57.20), 100 free (49.60), 200 free (1:47.93), 500 free (4:51.45) and 200 IM (2:01.45) events. Breaststroker Zach Hansen was our additional Sectional swimmer who swam both breaststroke events, the 200 IM, and improved his 100 butterfly (57.37) while in the time trial heats. Zach recorded his first short course times in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM events with the team.

colin-2010-sc-sectionals.JPG

Four of our 8 swimmers improved 100% of their times that had been previously recorded with the team. These four included: Sam Hansen who improved his 1650 free, 200 breast, 400 IM (4:14.89), 500 free (4:49.00) and 200 free (1:48.28) events; Zach Hansen who had a 100 fly time previously recorded on the team that he had improved (57.37); Colin Landweer improved his 100 free, 200 free, 400 IM (4:13.16), 200 IM, 50 free, 500 free (4:44.17) and 100 fly (54.42) events; and Bobby Yribarren who improved his 1650 free, 200 fly (1:54.64), 200 free (1:43.30), 500 free and 1000 free.

In the last CCS scheduled short course meet of the year Allyson Duffy was among 22 TNT swimmers who improved 100% of their times. She had placed 2nd in the 1650 freestyle event at the meet for all 11-12 year old girls, and her time of 18:49.56 now appears to stand as the second fastest in the history of Central California Swimming among any 11-12 girl who swam the event for CCS. The CCS record prior to the weekend was held by Corrie Payne who swam 18:53.99 in 2002 for Bakersfield Swim Club. Allyson’s success is attributed to the foundational training offered in Hanford by Coach Rhonda Shaw. Congratulations to both Allyson and Rhonda for their efforts leading to a swim that is under the CCS Record. Needless to say, Allyson’s time now stands as the current TNT team record for the event. The previous team record was held by Brianna Fleeman who swam 20:03.39 at the Tulare meet in February of this year (2010). Allyson’s time currently stands as the 89th fastest time in the nation for 12-year old girls.

tulare2.JPG

One additional team record was broken by two 11-12 girls while at the Tulare December meet. The 11-12 girls 200 butterfly standard was previously set by Katelyn Herrera, now 13, at the All Star Q meet in January. Katelyn’s team record of 2:30.37 stood for nearly a year. Both Mallory Korenwinder and Mia Newkirk went under the pre-existing record. Mallory swam 2:28.16 while our current 11-12 girls 200 butterfly record holder, Mia Newkirk, swam 2:26.57. Mia’s time is currently the 336th fastest time on record in the nation for all 12-year old girls.

tulare3.JPG tulare8.JPG

An 8-year old duo of Skylar Ford who trains in Visalia with coach Susie Edminster along with Jackson Huckabay of Selma who trains with Gary Ota were the only two TNT swimmers who swam uncontested at the meet winning all 10 event they entered.  Both Skylar Ford and Jackson Huckabay outscored all other swimmers in the 7-8 division with a 24 point margin (their 90 points vs. 66 points for second place high point). Recently returning from the Holiday Festival in Arizona, Taylor Shaw of Hanford was another high point winner who led the 13-14 girls division with 57 points. Our only other high point recipient came from Hannah Giles who led the way for the 15-over girls by edging out Madie Goodvin of Roadrunner 49 points to 43 points. Runner-up high point swimmers included: Priscilla Niayesh (7- girls), Mallory Korenwinder (11-12 girls), Emily Goodbar (13-14 girls), Chris Nolan (13-14 boys) and Wes Coles (15-over boys).

tulare6.JPG

In addition to Skylar Ford and Jackson Huckabay, other event champions included Wesley Coles (400 IM), Allyson Duffy (500 free), Chris Ewins (100 fly), Hannah Giles (200 back & 50 free), Emily Goodbar (400 IM, 100 back, 1650 free, 200 fly & 500 free), Mallory Korenwinder (50 fly, 400 IM, 200 breast, 100 IM & 50 breast), Colin Landweer (100 back), Mia Newkirk (100 breast), Chris Nolan (200 free, 400 IM, 200 breast & 200 fly), Nathan Rhea (200 free & 1650 free), Tenney Rizzo (100 fly) and Bobby Yribarren (50 free & 100 breast).

tulare7.JPG

The team improved 63% of all times that were previously recorded with the team in events that were 50 yards or longer. Congratulations to our 22 swimmers who improved 100% of their times during the meet:

Our next championship meet for the age group level will be the Far Western meet scheduled for the March 31-April 3rd week in 2011. This meet is considered one of the most prestigious age group meets in the nation where age group teams often travel from out of state to compete. The meet sheet is currently posted on our website at http://www.tritonswim.org/calendar.html

Including performances from the most recent December Tulare meet, TNT currently has 27 Far Western Qualifiers. Our list of current qualifiers and their age at the time the meet will take place, along with the current number of event they qualify for in parenthesis, is listed here. Congratulations to all 27, and good luck to those who intend to join the list.
