Forty nine TNT swimmers competed at the Porterville long course meet during the second weekend of March. Several of our young swimmers noticed and commented on their observation that TNT swimmers took up many of the lanes in various heats while at the meet. The Porterville meet was the first long course meet in the state, and gave our swimmers an opportunity to reestablish times for the long course season. Of our 49 swimmers, 24 swam their first long course meet with TNT. Check the Tulare TNT web page for the block of rooms that are set aside at the hotel directly across from the pool.

Finally, two team records had been broken while at this first long course meet. Both records were previously held by the current record holder. Twelve year old Christopher Nolan broke his own 800 meter freestyle record in the 11-12 age group by over a minute and thirty seconds. Chris swam 12:04.33 in the 800 last June at the same pool in Porterville, and this March (only nine months later) swam a 10:32.11.

Nathan Rhea was the only other record breaker at the meet. Nathan is 14 years old and also broke his 800 meter freestyle team record for the 13-14 age group. Nathan swam a 9:33.20 while at Western Zones in  Oregon last August while he was 13 years old. His 9:27.62 is nearly six seconds faster than his time swam at Zones last year.

Congratulations to all swimmers.

Fifty-three TNT swimmers competed at Junior Olympics this February, making it the largest showing in the history of the club at any Junior Olympic championship meet. Forty-nine of our swimmers qualified and participated in individual events. TNT placed fifth at the meet that hosted twenty-nine teams. With a total of 1,767 points, TNT was the third highest placed Central California Swimming team. Canyons Aquatics won with 4,207 points, with Clovis second. Bakersfield placed fourth with 2,226 and TNT placed behind Bakersfield.

Our 1,767 points was an accumulation from 1,174 points gained by individual events and 593 points gained by relays. Our top point getters were led by Mallory Korenwinder (124 points), Dax Korenwinder (123), Nathan Rhea (115), and Jonathan Granada (110). The following thirty-four swimmers scored in individual events while at the meet.

Nine team records fell to three individuals at the meet, and these were led by Jonathan Granada. Ten year old Jonathan breaks his own record with a 6:14.61 in the 500 free event by improving nearly ten seconds. His 100 fly improved over three seconds to a 1:12.09 to break Micah Storey’s record that was set back in 1987 at the Fig Garden Racket Club. Jonathan went on to set the 200 IM record by improving that event by over five seconds. His 2:41.68 is faster than Jason Ricablanca’s record that was established that was set at the Monterey meet in 1992. The final 10-under boys record that was broken at the meet was Jonathan’s four and a half second drop to a 1:04.52 in the 100 free. This former record also belonged to Jason Ricablanca and was set at the RCA meet in 1992.

Fourteen year old Nathan Rhea broke three records while at the meet. Nathan improves over thirty-five seconds in the 1000 free event to a 10:20.70 and breaks Allan Johnson’s record that was set at Far Westerns in 1989. He went on to break the 500 free team record with a 4:56.21; the record formerly belonged to Kohlton Norys and was set at Far Westerns in 2004. His final record was an improvement of his own 400 IM. Nathan had previously set the record in Chowchilla this past October, and improves it by over three seconds to a 4:25.98.The final record breaker was ten year old Mallory Korenwinder. Mallory set two new team records, the first being a 34.16 in the 50 breaststroke event. This time is currently the second fastest time swam in the nation this year by any 10 year old girl. The previous record was held by Lindsey Storey and was set at the RCA meet in 1994. Mallory’s 1:15.99 also broke Lindsey’s record that was set in 1994 at Far Westerns. Her time is currently the sixth fastest in the nation for all 10 year olds.  Additionally, thirty of our swimmers improved 50% or more of their times. Ten of our swimmers improved all events entered. These included Bryan Brown, Courtney Burmmet, Hannah Giles, Luke Gregory, Katelyn Herrera, Emily Jacobs, Conor Martin, Makenna Mason, Shanti Matkin and Sarah Peltzer.

Our same four swimmers competed at Long Beach last month at the Winter Invite meet.

DAX KORENWINDER, MALLORY KORENWINDER AND JOSH KOSTER GO UNDEFEATED AT RIGECRESTTwenty five TNT swimmers competed at the Ridgecrest meet and all 25 contributed to an overall team score of 1028 points by scoring in one or more events. The team total is lead by three swimmers who won every event that they were entered in, as well as the McCarthy sisters. Eight year old Dax Korenwinder and ten year old Mallory Korenwinder leads the team point total by each scoring 90 points and wining ten of ten events. Our next undefeated swimmer was twelve year old Josh Koster who remained undefeated in all eight events entered, brining home 72 points.Josh Avila, Joshua Caminero, Jacqui Koster, JD Koster and Kara Nino lead the team on improvements at the Beat the Cold Meet held in Ridgecrest during January 24th weekend by improving every event entered. MADIONS ELICK, JONATHAN GRANADA, KHLOE MCCARTHY & NATHAN RHEA SET SIX RECORDS

Ten year old Jonathan Granada leads the team in new records set while at the Last Chance meet this February. Jonathan breaks his own 500 free record which was set only about two weeks earlier during All Stars in Folsom. His previous record of 6:37.01 is now 6:24.34. He had also broken the team’s 100 IM record by over a second. Jonathan’s 1:14.63 breaks a long standing record that was set by Micah Storey at the Fig Garden Racquet Club in August of 1987. Jonathan has also tied Micha Storey’s 50 free record with a 29.77.

Fourteen year old Nathan Rhea’s 1:04.31 breaks his own 100 breaststroke record that he had sent while shaved and tapered at Winter Invite in December. The previous record stood at 1:04. 59. Twelve year old Madison Elick set a new 1650 freestyle record for the team in the 11-12 age group with her 22:52.64, which was re-established in the following heat by Khloe McCarthy. The new record is set at 21:36.01.

Sixty seven TNT swimmers competed at the Last Chance meet in Tulare during the first weekend of February. Dodging the potential rain for the weekend, our swimmers improved 62% of the 262 events that had been previously recorded on the team, and that were 50 yards or longer. This improvement percentage proved to be the largest for the year. Nineteen of our swimmers improved 100% of their times. These swimmers included: Rebecca Bristow, Bryan Brown, Jake Caminero, Greyson Canterbury, Taralyn DeLeeuw, Thys Jacobi, Emily Jacobs, Mathew Jacobs, Branson Kelly, Jenna Koetsier, Dax Korenwinder, Jacqui Koster, Alexander Metzner, Landon Molin, Christopher Nolan, Adrianna Pedro, Taylor Shaw and Kashin Visahan. Swimmers who improved 80-90 percent of their times included: Chris Ewins, Jonathan Granda, Shanti Matkin, Preston, Niayesh and Conor Martin. Improvement percentages in the seventies included: Trevor DeLeeuw, Madison Elick Simon Grigoryan and Nathan Rhea. Kara Nino, Thomas Brown, Nicholas Butler, Makenna Mason and Megan Nino improvement percentages were in the sixty percent range. Swimmers who improved half of their times included: Luke Gregory, Cori Hoover, Jill Jackson, Scott Jordan, Khloe McCarthy, Athena Niayesh, Jenna Jouar, Breann Santos, Carter Shaw and Connor Vasquez. Forty four of our sixty-seven swimmers improved at least 50% or more of their times.

The TNT Last Chance meet is the last meet prior to the entry deadline for Junior Olympics. Throughout the year sixty-six of our swimmers have qualified for Junior Olympics within their respective age groups. Congratulations to the following age-group breakdown of the swimmers who have qualified.

Thank you goes to Mike and Tami McCarthy for chartering a luxury bus for our team’s travel to the Arco Arena for the meet and greet event with Michael Phelps. Thanks also go to Shauna Rhea who coordinated the ticket purchasing and communicated with the Sacramento Kings staff. While there Michael shared his experiences of the Olympics and also provided some insight into the amount of training that he underwent to reach the goal of wining eight gold medals at the Olympics. Our swimmers had nearly front row seats to see the presentation by Michael.

Unfortunately, the Sacramento Kings did not fair very well, as they lost their game slightly to former champions, Boston Celtics. Nevertheless, we hope it will be a memorable experience, thanks to the McCarthy’s and Shauna Rhea.

The farthest traveled in attendance was now married, Mr. & Mrs. Jared Hopper. Jared is currently serving in the United State Air Force and is stationed in German.

Ben Hansen returned from Tulane University in Louisiana and shared his experiences and goals about college with our families. His brother Zach Hansen returned from UC Davis and shared his swimming experiences there and his recent performance at his college meet in Texas. David Lombardi attending Stanford University shared the challenges of getting into a college and encouraged tenacity among our swimmers. Kohlton Norys came back from Auburn to share his most recent competition at Nationals and life of a college student (including the need for cooking and ironing). Samantha Goates returned from Louisiana State to share her experiences in club swimming, and the team atmosphere at her college. Jordan Stotts came in from Fresno Pacific to explain some differences between NAIA and NCAA requirements.
