Day 2 (Thursday) – TNT had 3 swimmers on day two of Sectionals. The highest place goes to Zach Hansen who finished 29th in the 200 meter breaststroke event. His 2:28.22 was a mere .71 seconds from earning a second swim, but over 7 seconds faster than his entry time. Zach’s time also broke one of the longest standing team records by breaking Micah Storey’s 2:30.03 set at a Clovis meet back in July of 1994.

14-year old Nathan Rhea also competed in the 200 meter breaststroke on day 2. After improving over three seconds only last weekend with a 2:34.17 to qualify for Sectionals, Nathan improved an additional 2.04 seconds to a 2:32.13. He broke his own team record that was set last weekend, and comes within 2.74 seconds of Short Course Junior Nationals that will take place in Ohio in December, came within 2.35 seconds from the CCS record. Nathan’s time currently ranks 9th nationally.

Josh Tabers training in Hanford was the sole TNT swimmer with two events on day 2. Josh swam a 2:23.15 in the 200 meter backstroke, and a 57.36 in the 100 meter freestyle, thereby approaching his life-time best times.

The Senior Q meet in Clovis became the last opportunity to qualify for Sectionals, and became the first opportunity for some of our young swimmers to experience senior-level swimming at a local level. Twelve TNT swimmers qualified for, and competed at the meet with Kohlton Norys and Nathan Rhea leading the team in total points. Kohlton scored a total of 75 points in his six events, while Nathan scored a total of 60 points in his six events. Other point getters included: Sam Hansen(31 points), Jordan Stotts (20 points), Katherine Bristow (7 points), Alex Hansen (6 points), and Christopher Nolan (5 points).

Times from six of the individual events were fast enough to rank among the top 30 times currently in the nation. Of those times swam at the Q meet, Mallory Korenwinder maintains the highest ranking of 8th in her 100 meter breaststroke (1:23.12). Jordan Stotts swam a half second off of the Winter National cut (and 3 seconds off of last year’s Olympic Trial cut) with a time that ranks 16th among all 22 year olds in the nation (11th when considering non-foreign swimmers). Nathan Rhea next ranks 19th in the nation among all 14 year olds in the 200 meter breaststroke (2:34.17), and Kohlton Norys swam off of his time, but still fast enough for the 20th fastest time nationally for all 20 year olds in the 200 meter backstroke (2:08.77). Mallory Korenwinder was the sole individual with two swims that ranked among the top 30 nationally. Her 200 meter breaststroke (3:05.41) currently ranks among the top 28 in the nation.

92% of all our swimmers entered earned a second swim at the meet. Champions in the meet included Kohlton Norys who won the 100 freestyle (52.78) and Jordan Stotts who won the 100 meter breaststroke (1:07.04). Other top eight finishers (championship finalists) included: Sam Hansen (6th – 200 breast; 7th – 400 free); Kohlton Norys (3rd – 100 fly, 5th – 200 IM, 2nd – 200 back) and Nathan Rhea (3rd – 200 breast, 8th – 400 free, 4th – 1500 free, 8th – 200 back). Consolation Finalsist included: Katherine Bristow (100 back, 200 back), Alex Hansen (400 IM, 200 breast, 200 back), Sam Hansen (100 breast), Christopher Nolan (400 IM, 200 fly), Kohlton Norys (200 free), and Nathan Rhea (100 breast). Additional swimmers who swam to a bonus final included:  Hannah Giles, Katelyn Herrera, Mallory Korenwinder and Joshua Tabers.

Four team records were broken by two swimmers at the meet. Record breaking performances were led by Nathan Rhea. Nathan broke his own 100 and 200 breaststroke records while at the meet. His 2:34.17 in the 200 meter breaststroke was fast enough to qualify for Sectionals this next week. The third record Nathan broke was in the 13-14 400 meter freestyle event. His 4:27.85 broke Kohlton Norys’s 4:28. 90 that was set at a Clovis meet in 2004. Jordan Stotts was the other record breaker. Jordan’s 1:07.04 100 meter breaststroke time broke his own pre-existing record, and is now a mere .24 seconds off of the Winter National time standard, and 2.35 seconds off of last year’s Olympic Trial cut.

The overall team improvement percentage was 47% with five swimmers improving 100% of their times: Mallory Korenwinder, Christopher Nolan, Nathan Rhea, Allison Ross and Jordan Stotts. Improving 50% or more of their times were: Sam Hansen (67%), Katherine Bristow (50%) and Alex Hansen (50%).

Missy Lestrange is scheduled to compete at the Ironman World Championships 2009 that will be held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on Saturday, October 10, 2009, beginning at 6:45 in the morning. The race is a total of 140.6 miles in length and combines swimming (2.4 miles), biking (112 miles) and running (26.2 miles).

Missy had been a first place finisher in her age group during the 2008 World Championships with a time of 12:16.00 (WOW, what a long race). She has a renowned history of success at the Ironman which had brought her a level of recognition in the sport that many of us can only hope for. Here are a few examples from media sources of the past.

Here’s a segment of an article written in the 2003 report of the World Championships by Raymond Britt:

“At mile 10, I caught up with Missy LeStrange, a 51 year-old legend who has won many age group titles in Hawaii. She had missed the 2002 race due to injury, and she wanted to reclaim her status as age group champion this year. As I reached her just before the Palani Drive incline out of town, she was receiving word from her spotter that she was in the lead of her age group by 25 minutes. She was doing incredibly well, and we headed out toward the Energy Lab, passing athletes along the way.”

Here’s another segment written in Ironmanlive back in 2000:

“The age group awards were established in 1999 to recognize the accomplishments of age group athletes in Hawaii. Missy LeStrange and Bill Bell were the first recipients. “…Forty-seven-year-old Missy LeStrange has won her age group at the Ironman Triathlon World Championship each year since 1991. She has a total of 12 age group titles, including the 2000 Hawaii event. With 15 Ironman Triathlon World Championship finishes under belt, she also holds two age group records – one for the 40-44 age group and one for the 45-49 age group. In 1999, she set a new record for the 45-49 age group with her 10:51:11 finish, breaking the record she set in 1997….”

And yet another source that exemplifies the level of accomplishment that Missy has achieved is presented in a California International Marathon published in 1995:

“…Somewhere in here a woman with powerful shoulders passes by – it’s Missy LeStrange, the world’s most awesome age-group triathlete, a 40-something woman who can do a 10:30 Ironman, routinely winning her age group by an hour or more. By the time I gather my courage to say something, she’s out of reach. She only needs a 3:50 to qualify for Boston; [expletive removed], she’s done that in Hawaii!…”

In yesterday’s (July 15, 2009) edition of the Mid-Atlantic Monthly, Melissa Merson shared her experiences from the 2006 Ironman:

“…Being the princess that I am, I fumbled with the clasp on the tire pump for my bike. Missy LeStrange, the famous age-grouper who has won my age group in Kona more times that I can remember, notices my plight and comes over to help me. “Let me do it,” she says, and I sigh. She tries to talk me into pumping more air in my tires than I’d planned but I gently resist and thank her profusely. She then asked to borrow my pump, which I acquiesced to gladly. That was it. My bike was ready to go. I took two puffs off my asthma inhaler and threw it in the trash….”

If you’re watching on TV for this year, her bib number will be 396.We are all very proud of you Missy, and very honored that you chose to train with us.

Preston Niayesh takes home the King of the Pool award from the San Luis Obispo meet for the 8-year olds. The recognition is awarded to the one individual in each age division whose cumulative time from four sprint events totals to the fastest time.

Seventeen TNT swimmers competed at the meet with improvements being led by 11 year old JT Scott who made his return appearance as TNT. JT was the sole swimmer to improve 100% of his times. A total of seven swimmers improved 50% or more of their times. These swimmers included: JT Scott (100%), Emily Shandrew (80%), Keshin Visahan (80%), Alex Ellis (71%), Sam Hansen (71%), Fayyaz Ahamed (60%) and Preston Niayesh (60%).

Swimmers achieving new time standards include 9 year old Keshin Visahan who now hold two Junior Olympic qualifying times (50 and 100 meter backstroke) for the 9-10 age group. Keshin is currently 9 years old. Alex Ellis, Alex Hansen and Katelyn Herrera all achieve an additional Senior State meet qualifying time. Alex Ellis now qualifies in the 50 free and 100 back, Alex Hansen achieves a new cut in the 400 IM, now qualified in the 100 back, 200 back, 200 breast, 1500 free and 400 IM events, while 12-year old Katelyn Herrera now qualifies in both the 100 and 200 meter butterfly events.

A single team record was also broken while at the meet. 12 year old Katelyn Herrera swims the 200 meter butterfly in a time of 2:49.89, breaking the previous team record that was set by 11-year old Khloe McCarthy last month at the Fresno meet.

Over 40 teams competed at the Southern California Swimming Age Group Invitational held in Ventura during the last weekend of June. TNT scored 491 points to place 13th, ahead of host team Buena Ventura Swim Club. Fifteen of our 21 swimmers who were entered in the meet scored in their individual events. Swimmers must have finished within the top 16 in their individual events in order to score or receive awards at the meet. Our highest point getter went to Nathan Rhea with 2nd place finishes in the 200 and 100 breaststroke events, and 3rd place finishes in the 200 back, 400 IM and 100 back events. Point getters included: Nathan Rhea (92), Sam Hansen (37), Mallory Korenwinder (33), Josh Avila (32), Makenna Mason (29), Hannah Giles (28), Dax Korenwinder (27), Parker Giles (26), Madison Elick (19), Alex Hansen (16), Katelyn Herrera (11), Chris Hansen (10), Chris Nolan (10), Madison Gilbert (9) and Jonathan Granada (1).

Some notable new time standards were also achieved at the meet. Hanna Giles of Hanford established her first Sectional cut by swimming 28.84 in the 50 meter freestyle and finishing 4th in the event. Sam Hansen achieved his second Sectional cut, this time in the 1500 meter freestyle event with at 17:17.55, and Makenna Mason of Hanford qualifies for Junior Olympics in the 50 meter butterfly prior to aging up to the 11-12 age group. Her time was 37.89.

2009-agi3.JPG  2009-agi5.JPG 2009-agi6.JPG

Three new team records were also set while at the meet. These records were lead by Sam Hansen who re-establishes his previous 800 meter freestyle record. Sam had previously set the record at the Clovis Senior Q meet one year ago with a 9:14.72. His 9:13.19 is now the new record. Sam also broke the team record of 17:18.18 set at Junior Olympics in 2006 by Kohlton Norys. Sam dropped over 13 seconds to set the record at 17:17.55. Nathan Rhea was our only other record breaker. Nathan’s 5:05.27 broke Jared Hopper’s 5:07.16 record in the 400 IM which was previously set in 2003 while at Zones in Arizona.

The team improved an astounding 70% of times at the meet. Eight swimmers improved 100% of their times. These included: Fayyaz Ahamed, Josh Avila, Madison Elick, Hannah Giles, Parker Giles, Jonathan Granada, Dax Korenwinder and Makenna Mason. 17 swimmers improved 50% or more of their times.

The 111 remaining points were gained by relay performances from: Wesley Coles, Alex Ellis, Madison Gilbert, Hannah Giles, Alex Hansen, Sam Hansen, Katelyn Herrera, Cori Hoover, Mallory Korenwinder, Khloe McCarthy, Nathan Rhea, Allison Ross and Taylor Shaw.

Congratulations for a successful meet.

Eight year old Preston Niayesh scores 94 points at the Fresno meet winning four of his five events at the meet. He remained undefeated in all 8-under events at the meet, and placed 5th among the older 10-under swimmers in the 200 IM. Preston joins Kohlton Norys by being the only two TNT swimmers to win individual events at the meet. Preston, who trains out of Visalia, also maintained a high 80% improvement percentage by improving four of his five events.

Eleven year old Khloe McCarthy, while working her way to becoming one of TNT’s strongest distance swimmers, braves the 200 events at the Fresno meet while still on the bottom of the age group. Khloe becomes the first 11-12 girl swimmer to swim the 200 meter butterfly event, and does it by negative splitting the 2nd, 3rd and 4th 50’s in the race. Khloe now holds the 11-12 girls team record in that event with a 3:13.87. She has also now swam every nationally recognized event in long course for her age group.

Chris E Jill Jimmy

Six of our twenty one TNT swimmers who competed at the Fresno long course meet during the June 19th weekend improved 100% of their times. These improvements were led by Jill Jackson training with Bill Freeman as she improved five of five events. Megan Nino of Visalia had a perfect improvement with the next most numerous events entered. Megan improved four of four events. The team improvement percentage was a high 55%. The following table lists all swimmers who improved 50% or more of their times. Congratulations on a job well done.

Six year old Jazmine Niayesh successfully swam three new long course events at the meet. Two of these events included the 8-under 50 fly and 100 freestyle. Her most impressive event was her performance as a six year old competing among the 10-under swimmers in the 200 IM event. Jazmine was one of our high point winners from the Porterville meet held earlier this year.

Khloe Kohlton Preston

Congratulations to all swimmers.

Mallory Korenwinder raced to a 37.75 in the 50 meter breaststroke at the Porterville meet for a second place finish in the 11-12 girls age group and the time becomes the second fastest swam this year for any 11-year old in the nation. Mallory’s 37.75 is behind Dee Sopapong’s 37.44 which was established in January as the nation’s top 11 year old girl’s 50 meter breaststroke time. Dee is a foreign swimmer who swims for Tampa Bay Community Aquatics. Mallory’s time is also the second fastest time swam in our team’s history for any 11-12 year old girl.

44 TNT swimmers competed at the June Porterville long course meet in attempts to make new cuts for meets such as the Junior Olympics, the Age Group Invitational, Western Zones and Sectionals, all of which will be held later this summer. Examples of swimmers who had achieved new cuts include Sam Hansen (Sectionals – 400 IM), Mallory Korenwinder (Zones – 50 breaststroke) and Taylor Shaw (Age Group Invitational – 800 freestyle).

At a meet that almost didn’t include the events from day two, Sam Hansen competes in the final heat on the final day of the Porterville meet and swam fast enough for to qualify of Sectionals in the 400 meter IM event. Sam has had previous experience at Sectionals while competing for FALFINS in Colorado, a team that practiced at the Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Sam had competed at the Sectional meet for Colorado, which was held at Federal Way, Seattle only a few months prior to arriving to TNT. Since each Sectional meet in the United States has different time standards, Sam now qualifies for the Western Sectionals meet that will be held in Clovis this summer. The winter Sectionals meet will be held at the Belmont pool in Long Beach. Sam is also one second away in the mile (1500 meter freestyle or 1650 yard freestyle events). Wish Sam good luck in qualifying in his second event.

Sam Hansen has returned from meets such as the Speedo Grand Challenge and the Janet Evans Invitational where he competed in meets with swimmers such as Jason Lezak and with swimmers from schools such as Auburn (Kohlton), Stanford, USC, Tulane and others, as well as with swimmers competing from countries such as Korea and Japan, to win three of his events in Porterville. Sam was the 15-over champion in the 200 IM, 200 breaststroke and 400 IM events.

Other individual swimmers who won events at the Porterville meet were led by 8-under Dax Korenwinder, who once again has a perfect undefeated performance winning all five of five events entered. Wesley Coles swam Saturday and won the 100 fly event, an event in which he had more recently qualified for the Senior Group on the team. Age Group Invitational qualifier Alex Ellis wins the 13-14 girls 100 fly event. High school swimming standout from Hanford, Hannah Giles won the 200 meter breaststroke, while relatively new arrival Katelyn Herrera takes first place finishes in both the 50 and 100 butterfly events, thereby beginning to establish herself as a force in that stroke to be reckoned with within CCS. High school swimmer training with Bill Freeman, Jill Jackson wins the 200 breaststroke event, while eight year old Thys Jacobi has triple wins taking the 100 and 200 freestyle events, along with the 200 IM event. From Visalia, brother and sister team of Jazmine Niayesh (6 year old) and Preston Niayesh (8 year old) also become champions winning two events each. Jazmine wins the 50 breaststroke and 50 freestyle events, while brother Preston wins the 50 breaststroke and 100 butterfly events. Our fourteen year old Nathan Rhea, working his way to his first Sectional cut, wins both the 100 and 200 meter breaststroke events. Allison Ross, who is nearing her first Age Group Invitational cut, became the champion if the 13-14 girls 100 backstroke event. Our final individual event champion went to 13 year old Talyor Shaw who wins the 200 meter backstroke event while she may had become the sole swimmer with the largest net improvement dropping nearly 20 seconds in the 800 freestyle event and over 18 seconds in the 400 IM events. While on the bottom of the age group, Taylor had also achieved her first Age Group Invitational time standard. Congratulations to all winners.

The 989.5 team points for TNT outscored all other teams by 647.5 points. Merced was the second place team with 342 combined points. Poterville awarded top three individual high point winners, and TNT swimmers were the recepients for many of these awards. Winning the youngest age group (6-under girls) was Jazmine Niayesh training in Visalia. 8-year old Madison McCarhty took home the 2nd place high point for the 8-under girls division while Thys Jacobi and Dax Korenwinder took home 1st and 2nd place awards respectively for the 8-under boys division. The Hanford duo of Parker Giles and Fayyaz Ahamed took home 2nd and 3rd place trophies for the 9-10 boys division, while Katelyn Herrera and Chris Hansen both took home the 3rd place trophy for the 11-12 girls and boys division respectively. In the 13-14 girls division, Allison Ross and Hannah Giles captured the 2nd and 3rd place finishes, while on the boy’s side, Nathan Rhea and Alex Hansen tied for the 3rd place finish. Sam Hansen was the 2nd place point getter for the 15-over boys division.

Besides winning events, TNT had several swimmers who improved all times that had been previously recorded on the team. New arrival from New York, swimming his second meet with TNT, Fayyaz Ahamed of Hanford improves 100% of his times that were previously recorded with our team. Chris Ewins and Nick Orton both training with Bill Freeman in Tulare both also improve 100%, while Jacquelyn Delgado’s Mackenzie Gilbert joins the perfect group improving all four of her four events. Angela Martinho’s Katelyn Herrera and Visalia’s Athena Niayesh were the other two individual swimmers who improved all events. Congratulations to all six swimmers.

In addition to Sam Hansen qualifying for Sectionals, a few other swimmers had made new qualifying standards for upcoming championship-level meets. Eight year old Dax Korenwinder makes new cuts for the 10-under division of the Age Group Invitational meet, while sister Mallory Korenwinder achieves a new standard for Western Zones to be held in Hawaii in a couple of months. Thirteen year old Taylor Shaw achieved her first Age Group Invitational standard for this summer’s meet in Ventura and more than likely had qualified for the Winter Age Group Invitational meet in December. Congratulations to all new cuts made.

Kohlton Norys, returning from Auburn, not only earned second swims while at the Janet Evans Invitational held in Irvine this past weekend, but also improved two of his swims. this is impressive considering that he’s on a break in training. Kohlton had also set new team records in the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly events. His 50 free record was previously owned by him. The old record was set at Sectionals in Bakersfield two years ago at a 25.13 while he was 17 years old. The new record now stands at a 23.68. The previous record in the 100 meter butterfly of 56.19 was set at Nationals in Indianapolis shortly after graduation from high school. The new record is now a 56.03.

Sam Hansen also competed at the JEI and improved his 1500 freestyle event by over ten seconds. Sam’s 17:31.01 is now the second fastest mile in the team’s history behind Kohlton’s 17:18.18 set at Junior Olympics back in 2006. Nathan Rhea also competed at the meet and improved his 200 meter backstroke by over 12 seconds. His time of 2:24.95 is now the ninth fastest time for a 13-14 boy in the team’s history. He is the second fastest 13-14 boy in the history of the team in this event, behind Kohlton Norys who holds the team record at 2:13.96. Josh Tabers of Hanford was the fourth and final TNT swimmer competing at the meet. Josh swam the 200 back, 100 back and 100 free events.

Christopher Nolan was the only other swimmer who broke a team record out of the 42 who competed at one of the two meets this past weekend. Among other events, Christopher reestablished his 11-12 team record in the 1500 freestyle by improving nearly two minutes. His old record of 21:50.47 was set at Merced in 2008, and now stands at 19:51.79. Christopher also achieved a new Age Group Invitational time standard for the 13-14 age group in that event.
