Two years ago TNT had no swimmers entered into the Santa Clara International meet, for the first time in several years. Last year trailblazers Colin Landweer and Nathan Rhea qualified and competed at the meet to become the first two of a new cohort. Five swimmers competed at the meet this year, and includedWesley Coles, Mallory Korenwinder, Colin Landweer Chris Nolan and Nathan Rhea.  Chris Nolan became the only individual with a second swim, and he did so in the 200 meter butterfly event with a time of 2:07.25 and a 7th place finish in the bonus heat, which was the 25th fastest time swam at the meet in the event that fielded 9 swimmers in each of three final heats.

2012-sc1.jpg

Mallory Korenwinder was one of two swimmers (the other being Chris Nolan) who came away with a 100% improvement rate, and her highest place finish came in the 100 meter breaststroke where she posted a time of 1:15.72 that resulted in a 45th place finish. The highest place finish from Wesley Coles was 55th in the 400 freestyle (4:15.35) and the highest place finish for Nathan Rhea was 37th in the 400 IM where he posted a time 4:49.27. Colin Landweer’s time of 2:17.55 gave him his highest place finish of 63rd in the 200 IM.

Our four male swimmers teamed up for three relays, the highlight being the 800 freestyle relay where an opportunity presented itself that placed our team into lane 5 which is commonly reserved for the fastest team entered into the event. Our sixth place performance by Wesley Coles, Chris Nolan, Colin Landweer and Nathan Rhea in the event was attained while competing with the Japan National Team to the left in lane 6 and the Australian National Team to the right in lane 3 in the 9-lane pool where lane 5 would be the fastest seed. Our team posted a time of 8:06.68 which broke both the 15-18 team record of 8:22.97 that was set by Wesley Coles, Nathan Rhea, Sam Hansen and Colin Landweer at Junior Olympics last year.

Twelve TNT swimmers competed at the IMX Meet held in Bakersfield on May 12th. Swimmers needed to compete in all five IMX events in order to earn a high point award at the meet. Nine year old Danielle Albright was one of two TNT swimmers to enter five events, and became the high point recipient for the 10-under division by swimming to four 2nd place finishes and one 4th place finish.

Our team had four event champions at the meet that included Chris Hansen who took home the win in the 13-over 400 IM (5:13.93). Fourteen year old Mallory Korenwinder won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:53.22, while nine-year old Priscilla Niayesh was the champion in the 100 fly for the 10-under division (1:38.62). Chris Nolan was our only double winner, and he did this in both the 200 breaststroke (2:38.69) and 200 fly (2:13.59) events in the 13-over division.

Five swimmers improved every event they entered, thereby maintaining a 100% improvement rate when considering those times that had been previously recorded with the team. Josh Avila and Morgan Coddington each improved one event, while sister Paige Coddington improved two of two events. Chris Hansen improved all three events he entered, while Priscilla Niayesh improved all four events that she had entered.

The longest race in competitive swimming, outside of an open-water swim, is the 1500 freestyle. Considered from a swimming perspective as, “the mile,” this race is 30 lengths of a 50-meter pool, or 66 lengths of a 25-yard pool (1650 yards). The time of 15:53.59 is the minimum time standard to compete at this year’s Olympic Trials in this event. Robert Yribarren of Selma swam a time of 15:58.18 at the meet which places him a mere 4.59 seconds from the time standard at an early season meet. His time was fast enough for a ninth place finish, which was his second highest place. His top event in terms of place came in the 800 freestyle where his time of 8:26.74 was the 6th fastest time at the meet. Although the 800 freestyle is not an Olympic event for the men, the 400 freestyle is. Bobby swam to a 14th place finish in that event with a time of 4:03.70 that placed him 3.71 seconds from the Olympic Trial cut in that event. Both the 1500 and 800 freestyle events resulted in team records for Bobby in events where he had set the record last year at Sectionals. His previous 1500 time was 16:13.43, while his previous 800 time was 8:28.13. Bobby will be competing in the 10K at the Open Water Nationals held at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida on Friday, April 27th.

The only other swimmer to experience a second swim at the meet way Wesley Coles, and he did so in both butterfly events. Wesley competed at both long course and short course Junior Nationals last year in the 200 fly event, and he swam to a 21st place finish at the Swim Meet of Champions with a time of 2:08.45 which places him 2.16 second from this summer’s Junior National cut, 3.46 seconds from the National cut, and 4.46 seconds from the Olympic Trial cut. His 58.31 in the preliminary heats of the 100 meter fly was enough to get him to the bonus heat in that event.

Fourteen year old Emily Goodbar of Selma has established a trend of record-breaking performance in the 200 fly event for short course that started last November, and seemingly with no end. Now with this early long course meet, Emily continues that record breaking streak, but now in long course. Her time of 2:24.64 in the 200 meter fly event at the meet shattered one of the longest remaining team records on the books. Lynnie North had set the record to a 2:28.36 during the final heat at Zones in Santa Clara back in 1990. Emily is nearly four seconds under the preexisting record, and her time currently stands as the 32nd fastest time of any 14-year old girl in the nation for this year.

Two swimmers improved all events that were entered in the meet. Chris Nolan improved a total of 49 seconds in five events, with his largest improvement of over 31 seconds occurring in his 800 freestyle (9:01.32). Fourteen year old Lauren Davis of Fig Garden had two times that had been previously recorded with the team, and her largest improvement of 4.5 seconds came in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.25). Joseph Cobarrubias of Fig Garden recorded three new long course times with the team.

The following table lists our 2012 SMOC Team along with the event of their highest place:

Individual High Point awards were given to the 6-under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 age divisions for both male and female swimmers competing and scoring at the Merced meet that was held at the Clovis North complex over the April 14-15 weekend. High Point recipients for five of these divisions went to a TNT swimmer. Paige Cost took home the honors for the 6-under girls by winning all of her events, while her brother Peyton Costa captured the title for the 7-8 boys division, winning the 200 free (3:11.82), 100 fly (1:58.78), 100 back (1:46.02), 50 free (39.23), 100 free (1:24.87), 50 fly (45.88), 50 back (48.86) and 200 IM (3:44.93). The 11-12 boy High Point winner was Parker Giles who was the champion in seven of ten events that included the 200 free (2:40.05), 100 fly (1:22.77), 50 breast (41.17), 100 back (1:21.50), 50 fly (31.23), 100 breast (1:32.91) and 200 IM (2:49.67). Both male and female 13-14 champions were both TNT swimmers, with Mallory Korenwinder accumulating the most points for the girls partly by winning the 200 breaststroke (2:57.24), 200 fly (2:48.64) and 100 breaststroke (1:20.51) events. Although not recognized at the meet, both 15-over male and female swimmers that received the most points based on placing were also from TNT. Hanford Swimmer Taylor Shaw out placed Teri Wells of Tuolumne County for the top spot, while Chris Nolan earned enough points for the top spot for the 15 over boys.

Two of our 57 swimmers were undefeated in the events they participated in within their respective age divisions. Paige Costa swam away with four 1st place finishes for four events in the 6-under division, winning the 60 breaststroke (1:15.87), 50 free (51.07), 50 fly (59.91) and 50 back (1:02.35). On the boys side, Chris Nolan was undefeated in the 15-16 division winning all eight of his events that included the 200 free (2:05.73), 100 fly (1:02.16), 100 back (1:11.82), 50 free (27.24), 100 free (58.54), 100 breast (1:14.75), 200 back (2:33.58) and 200 IM (2:25.29) events.

Our team maintained an improvement rate of 55% with the following individuals improving all events they had competed in, and that had been previously recorded with the team: Danielle Albright (10 of 10), Madelyn Ansel (3 of 3), Janessa Bringe (10 of 10), Emma Coelho (1 of 1), Paige Costa (1 of 1), Skylar Ford (6 of 6), Jake Goodbar (3 of 3), Peyton McKinzie (2 of 2), Athena Niayesh (3 of 3), Kara Nino (3 of 3), Cameron Weas (3 of 3) and Bobby Yribarren (1 of 1).

Tule Nation Tritons fielded 17 swimmers in individual events at this year’s Far Western Championships. The meet that was held in Morgan Hill during the last weekend of March was host to teams throughout the United States and Canada. Tule Nation Tritons had four swimmers who qualified for a championship swim (top 10 places) at a meet that is considered one of the most competitive and prestigious age-group meets in the nation. Championship finalists were led by 14-year old Kyle Grissom who tripled up with a third place finish in the 100 fly (53.66), a 5th place finish in the 50 free (22.86) and a 7th place finish in the 200 fly (2:01.73). Thirteen year old Mallory Korenwider doubled up her championship events with a 4th place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.85) and 5th place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.19) events. Fifteen year old Joseph Cobarrubias eared a second swim with an 8th place finish in the 100 free (49.51), while 14-year old Emily Goodbar earned her second swim with a 6th place finish in the 200 fly (2:08.62).

Seven team records were set by five TNT swimmers while at the meet. Two of Kyle Grissom’s championship swims also resulted in team records. His 53.66 in the 100 fly is an improvement to his 54.56 time that he posted as a new record while at Junior Olympics in February of this year. His new record currently stands as the 87th fastest time for a 14-year old male in the nation. His 22.86 in the 50 freestyle event is a new record for him, breaking the 23.15 that was set by Colin Landweer while at the Merced meet in 2009. Kyle’s new record in the 50 free is the 197th ranked time in the nation for the age, gender and event.

Mallory Korenwinder’s two championship swims were also improvements to her preexisting team records. Her 2:23.19 in the 200 breaststroke is an improvement over her time of 2:24.19 that she swam at Sectionals last December, and currently stands as the 19th fastest time in the nation for all 13-year old girls. Her 1:05.85 also topped her Sectional scoring swim of 1:06.47 (that was repeated at both preliminary and final heats at Sectionals) and is also currently ranked as the 19th fastest time nationally for 13-year old girls.

Ten year old Janessa Bringe made her first appearance at Far Westerns, and her time of 2:19.59 set a new team record in the 200 freestyle event, and was a 23rd place finish at the meet. The previous record was held by Khloe McCarthy and set as 2:19.74 at the Hanford meet in 2008. Janessa’s time currently ranks 388th nationally for all 10-year old girls.

Fourteen year old Emily Goodbar set the team record in the 200 fly for the first time at the Terrapin meet last November with a time of 2:11.55, then went on to improve the record at the Fullerton meet to a 2:09.67. Now at Far Westerns, Emily continues to improve her team record, and now her time of 2:08.62 stands as the 100th fastest time in the nation.

Micah Ruiz’s 25.47 in the 50 freestyle was fast enough for a first alternate position at the meet for the 11-12 boys division. Twelve year old Micah went home with the team record in the event by swimming under Kyle Grissom’s 25.51 that he had set as the record while at the San Luis Obispo meet in November of 2010. Micah’s time currently stands as the 305th fastest time in the nation for all 12-year old boys.

Congratulations to all 17 TNT swimmers who qualified for a meet which has a time standard, if only reached sets a swimmer apart from the general group of athletes. The following is a list each of our 17 swimmers, their age, highest placed event, and their time in that event:

Tule Nation Tritons also successfully completed one 10-under girls relay that placed 16th at the meet with a time of 2:04.64 and was composed of Skylar Ford, Priscilla Niayesh, Alex Roberts and Janessa Bringe.

Four male swimmers qualified and competed at the NCSA Junior National Meet that took place in Orlando, Florida over the March 20-24 weekend. The meet was once a replacement for the USA Junior National meet when USA Swimming chose to eliminate the option for athletes. The National Club Swimming Association (NCSA – not to be confused with the NCSA for the National Collegiate Scouting Association which often asks for money) was founded by a team of coaches that valued the importance of a “Junior National” meet and created an event that gained in popularity to such a degree that some may consider to be a contributing factor for the return of a USA Junior national meet.

Wesley Coles was our highest place finisher with a 39th place finish in the 200 fly event (1:52.67). He improved four times including the 50 yard fly (24.24), 200 yard free (1:44.27), 1500 meter free (16:51.23) and 800 meter free (8:55.66). Our next highest place finish was Chris Nolan in the 200 fly (1:54.37) which was also a time improvement. Nathan Rhea finished 106th in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.18), while Colin Landweer finished 121st in the 50 free (22.17).

Twenty TNT swimmers competed at the Clovis Senior Q meet (Juanita Allington Senior Championships) during the first weekend of March. This meet served as the last opportunity to qualify for the NCSA Junior National meet that would take place later in the month. Seventeen year old Nathan Rhea came home with the only team record from the meet, and he did so with fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke event. His 59.75 was the first time under a minute posted at a club meet for any TNT swimmer. The time takes the record away from Wesley Coles who swam 1:00.08 at Sectionals this past December. Nathan’s time currently ranks 261st among all 17-year old male swimmers in the nation.

Swimmers who finished among the top 30 during the preliminary heats earned a second swim at the meet.  The following nine TNT swimmers finished among the top 30 an at least one event:

Our Selma group hosted the first long course meet of the season for Central California Swimming, and TNT had 61 swimmers participate at the Clovis North complex. The IM-Ready (IMR) is one phase of the overall USA Swimming’s IMX Challenge ranking and competition system. In the IMR phase, swimmers compete in shorter events as they develop on their way to compete in all the required events for an IMX ranking that requires longer events. Information on the IMX Challenge can be found by clicking on the IMX Challenge link.

Event champions were led by 9-year old Jackson Huckabay who won three of his five events: 100 free (1:15.15), 50 back (43.29) and 200 IM (3:10.37).  Our other event champions included 14-year old Lauren Davis (200 IM – 2:39.77), 12-year old Parker Giles (50 fly – 32.42), 13-year old Mia Newkirk (100 fly – 1:12.07), 10-year old Madison Pallares (50 breast – 45.73), 10-year old Garrison Price (50 fly – 40.00), and Coach Bobby Yribarren (200 free – 2:01.29).

Congratulations to the following 20 swimmers who improved 100% of their times:

The 59 swimmers of Tule Nation Tritons were among the 484 swimmers at the 2012 Short Course Junior Olympics, and placed 3rd behind the 76 Palo Alto swimmers and the 101 Clovis swimmers this past February. The 3,283 TNT points fell 325 points short of Clovis’s 3,635 for the second place finish, although our male team outscored Clovis 1,888 to their 1,419.

Seven year old Ian Belfower of Bakersfield led all TNT swimmers in point accumulation with six first place finishes and contributed a total of 136 points to the third place team finish. He swam undefeated in his age group, and then went on to compete in the 10-under division where he took home a third place finish in the 100 back (1:17.18) while competing in the age group above him.

Tule Nation Tritons fielded seven event champions at the meet, with three of them winning two events each. Fourteen year old Katelyn Herrera was a two-time champions taking home wins in both the 13-14 girls 1650 free (18:17.76) and also in the 500 free (5:12.74) where she established her second Sectional time while at the meet. Mallory Korenwinder took home two first place finishes in both breaststrokes swimming 1:07.02 in the 100 and 2:27.54 in the 200 yard event for the 13-14 girls. Fourteen year old Khloe McCarthy was a two-time champion winning the 400 IM (4:40.07) with a new Sectional cut, as well as the 200 back (2:13.74).

2012scjo1.jpg

Other event champions included Emily Goodbar who became the champion in the 1000 freestyle (11:01.33) for the 13-14 girls division. Kyle Grissom took home a win in the 13-14 boys 100 fly with his team record breaking performance of 54.56. The previous record was held by Chris Nolan who set the record at last year’s Junior Olympics as a 54.75. Kyle’s time currently ranks 119th in the nation. Twelve year old Micah Ruiz took home a win in the 11-12 boys 50 free after swimming a 25.78 in the preliminary heats.

Our team maintained a 68% improvement rate with the following 15 swimmers improving all events they had entered: Mason Amble (6 of 6), Janessa Bringe (6 of 6), Luke Dignan (2 of 2), Olivia Garabedian (1 of 1), Kyle Grissom (7 of 7), Naomi Haworth (1 of 1), Josh Holt (2 of 2), Jackson Huckabay (7 of 7), Jakob Koorey (2 of 2), Garrison Price (2 of 2), Alex Roberts (5 of 5), Micah Ruiz (8 of 8), Mark Tiersma (5 of 5), Ivan Villavazo (2 of 2), and Justin Warner (3 of 3). Congratulations to a perfect meet.

2012scjo2.jpg

Sixteen team relay records were broken at the meet with nine of them coming from the 13-14 age group alone. Both 8-under boy relay records were a mere two seconds off of the CCS Record set back in 1985, while our 13-14 girls 400 Medley Relay missed the CCS Record by one second. All record-breaking relays qualify at the Far Western time standard.
