Sam Hansen became our only championship finalist at the Clovis Senior Q meet that was host to over 300 swimmers primarily from Pacific Swimming. With his championship finish, Sam became the highest point-getter on our team with 17 points in two scoring events. Sam became our championship finalist by swimming 4:19.10 in the preliminary heats of the 400 IM, which was fast enough for a 10th place finish, where he was then moved to the championship heat. He then advanced from 9th to 8th while there. Sam led off the first day of the Senior Q meet with a 10:11.32 in the 1000 freestyle which was fast enough for an 11th place finish that placed TNT in eighth place after the first day of the meet. Sam shaves a half second off of his 100 fly with a 59.37 and 46th place finish. Sam nearly swims under the minute with his 1:00.06 which was fast enough for a 26th place finish in the C-final.

Nathan Rhea was our next highest scorer as he earned three points in the 200 fly event, improving just over a second with a 2:06.24 which took him into finals in 17th place. While in the B finals, Nathan improved nearly three additional seconds and moved to 14th place with a time of 2:03.83. Nathan nearly broke the 2 minute mark with his 2:01.99 in the 200 IM and finished 13th in that event.

Sprinter Colin Landweer who resides in Lemoore and trains in Tulare swam a total of 13 races at the meet, and on days would swim six times. His scoring event came in the 500 freestyle where his 4:53.81 in the preliminary heats and 16th place consolation swim earned a point for the overall team total, and more importantly, became his second Sectional cut. His bonus final events included: 100 free (27th – 50.16), 100 fly (25th – 56.88), 100 breast (24th– 1:06.25) and 200 IM (24th– 2:06.98).

Wesley Coles swam his first sub-5 minute time in the 500 yard freestyle, and did so twice with a 4:59.19 in the preliminary heats, getting close enough to scratch into the bonus final heat where he finished 21st with a 4:56.61. Wesley Coles had the largest improvement of over 11 seconds in the 400 IM where he earned a C-final spot with a 4:28.29 and finished 26th in that event.

Jordan Morillo, currently training with Fresno State, returned from her conference meet and swam 4 seconds faster in the 200 freestyle to a 2:01.71. Jordan just missed the team record in the 100 fly with her 1:00.88 and 28th place finish from the preliminary heats. Jordan Morillo broke the team record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:08.95 and swam to a 17th place finish in the preliminary heats. The previous record was set by Katherine Bristow in December of 2008 at the Tulare meet.

Thirteen year old Christopher Nolan was one of the youngest male swimmers competing at the meet, and earned a second swim in the bonus heat for the 200 butterfly event where he swam a life-time best of 2:11.37 and finished 23rd. Among the other events that Chris swam, he also time trialed his 100 breaststroke, and swam well under the 1:09.09 time standard for the Q meet, and also achieved an additional Far Western cut with his 1:08.39. Chris also swam to a 11nd place finish in the 1000 freestyle with a 11:01.56.

Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder swam the 200 breaststroke and finished 53rd with a 2:43.98. Mallory time trialed the 50 freestyle and just missed the minimum time standard for the meet with her 27.77. Twelve year old Brianna Fleeman joined the ranks of the senior swimmers and swam near her best time in the 100 freestyle with a 1:00.96. Allison Ross competed in one individual event and one time trial, and improved her 200 free time trial event by nearly 3 seconds (2:12.79). Her individual event was the 50 free where she swam 27.75.

After a near miss of the team 11-12 girls’ team record in the 1650 during the Merced meet in October of last year, Selma swimmer Brianna Fleeman was determined to re-establish the standard during the Tulare meet. A near one-minute improvement by Brianna reset the team record from a 20:56.66 to a 20:03.39. The previous team record for the 11-12 girls was also broken by 11-year old Hanford swimmer Allyson Duffy who swam a 20:18.25 and swimming the event for the first time. The previous record was held by Khloe McCarthy from Tulare.

Tule Nation Tritons scored nearly a thousand points beyond the next team at the Tulare meet which is the last meet going into Junior Olympics. Nathan Rhea has been announced by USA Swimming as one of 28 male swimmers who are invited to attend one of four Zone Select Camps. Nathan is invited to attend the Western Zone Select Camp. One purpose of the Zone Select Camp is for USA Swimming to identify the emerging youth in each Zone and provide experiences for those swimmers as they move on to the national level of competition.

Girls must have been between the ages of 12-13 and boys must have been between the ages of 13-14 between May and August of 2009. Fifteen swimmers for each gender were selected based on IMX points (8 girls aged 12, 7 girls age 13, 8 boys age 13 and 7 boys of age 14) from this past summer’s long course performance. The 13 additional swimmers are selected if they are the fastest swimmer in their Zone in each Olympic event (not including the 50 free).

Nathan’s Western Zone Select Camp will take place May 27-30 at Arizona State University in Tempe,  Arizona, and all athlete expenses once at the camp are covered by USA Swimming.

Congratulations Nathan, your hard work pays off.

Twelve TNT swimmers traveled to Chula Vista, California to represent Central California Swimming at the 2010 Central California Swimming – Sierra Nevada – San Diego Imperial Tri-meet held over the January 23-24 weekend. With 27 points from individual events, Katelyn Herrera led the TNT swimmers in the contribution of points for the CCS team. Her time of 2:30.37 in the 200 fly was high enough for a 4th place finish, which along with Christopher Nolan’s 4th place finish in the 100 breaststroke, was also the highest individual place finish by a TNT swimmer. Katelyn also broke the 11-12 girls’ team record in the 200 butterfly that was set at Vacaville in 2002 by Joclyn Ford. Katelyn swam two new Far Western cuts in the 200 fly and 200 IM events. She joins Kyle Grissom and Christopher Nolan as other TNT All Star swimmers who have qualified for Far Westerns.

The Team point contribution from individual events was led by Katelyn Herrera (27 points), Christopher Nolan (25 points), Kyle Grissom (24 points) and Michael Mason (22 points).

all-star-points.JPG

Michael Mason led all TNT swimmers in improvement percentages as he improves all five of the events he is entered in. Michael is the sole individual with a 100% improvement. Michael is followed by Savanah Nolan who improved 80% of her times. Other TNT swimmers who improved 50% or more of their times included: Katelyn Herrera (67%), JD Koster (50%), Madison McCarthy (50%) and Christopher Nolan (50%).

DAY 1

The second day of the Long Beach Grand Prix was the first day for TNT swimmers. Day 1 included events for our sprint freestylers, butterflyers, backstrokers and distance freestylers. While Matt Grevers wins the 100 freestyle with a 43.06, Justin Lopez-Lamb began our day with a near best time of 48.66 in the 100 free, thereby being our fastest freestyler at the meet. Joining Justin in the 100 free was Thomas Brown who swam near his best with a 50.43. Bobby Yirabarren was the sole individual on day 1 with time improvements and swam 1:57.51 in the 200 butterfly. Nathan Rhea’s 200 backstroke followed Bobby, and Nathan’s 2:03.88 becomes his second fastest 200 backstroke time. Michael Phelps easily won the 500 freestyle event on this day with a 4:18.70. Sam Hansen and Bobby Yirabarren teamed up in the 500 freestyle with Sam swimming 4:57.33 which is within six seconds of his lifetime best that was established only a few weeks ago. Bobby Yirabarren continues his improvement by breaking his previous team record to a 4:42.70.  Bobby set the previous team record with a 4:45.24 last month at the Arizona Festival.

The day concluded with our 4 x 100 freestyle relay with Bobby Yirabarren leading off with a 49.09 followed by Justin Lopez-Lamb who swam the second leg at a 48.03. Thomas Brown was the third swimmer at a 49.80 and our team was anchored by Sam Hansen who finishes with a 50.60. Our team’s time of 3:17.59 finished 22nd at the meet which was nine seconds behind Jason Lezak’s team’s fifth place finish time of 3:08.35.

DAY 2

Bobby Yirabarren continues to lead the team in improvement on day 2 as he swims 1:45.46 in the 200 freestyle placing 72nd in that event. Our breaststrokers swam heats before World Record holder Kosuke Kitajima’s 1:56.36 in the 200 breaststroke. Nathan Rhea swam 2:16.56 to finish 54th while Sam Hansen swam a 2:17.66 for a 65th place finish. Triton sprint freestylers swam before Matt Grever’s 20.02 and Jason Lezak’s 20.18 in the 50 freestyle. Justin Lopez-Lamb finished 61st with a 22.26 while Thomas Brown finished 117th with his 22.91. kohlton-aofd.JPG

This past weekend’s local paper has named Kohlton Norys as one of the five recipients of the Athletes of the Decade.

The Times Delta, along with the Fresno Bee and Channel 30, have been very supportive of our swimmers over time, and continue to be so. Along with those highlights that were listed in the paper, here are a few others about Kohlton that our new members may not be aware of:

Kohlton was the fastest collegiate 100 yard backstroker in the nation this past year by winning the NCAA Championships in that event. His 45.13 that the Times Delta listed places him as the 7th fastest backstroker ever in the United States (which includes one non-USA athlete). Only 4 swimmers in the United States have ever gone under 45 seconds in the 100 yard backstroke: Ryan Lochte (44.60 in 2006), Ben Hesen (44.72 in 2008), Albert Subirats (44.83 in 2007), and Neil Walker (44.92 in 1997).  Kohlton’s swim is listed as the 8th all time performance even when considering repeated times nationally. This means that only seven other swims were ever faster than the time he swam this past year (and this includes two swims by Albert Subirats). Ryan’s time of 44.60 is the American Record which places Kohlton a mere .53 seconds away.

Since Kohlton is in Division 1, this made him faster than any 100 backstroker from any college, including Stanford, Berkley, Texas, Michigan or any others. By the way, this was done while he was only in his second year in college. It’s believed that he is the first swimmer from Central California Swimming (CCS) to have ever won a Division 1 NCAA Championship. His race can be viewed at http://www.tritonblog.org/ and can be found in the March archive of postings (March 31st entry to be more specific).

Kohlton broke the National Age Group (NAG) record the previous year in the 17-18 age group. To help put this in perspective, the 200 yard backstroke NAG record was held by Michael Phelps, and both the 100 and 200 short course records were held by Natalie Coughlin. Both swimmers of course went on to the Olympics.

Kohlton became a nationally ranked age group swimmer for the first time while he was in the 15-16 age group, and then of course based on his National Record, became the fastest swimmer in the nation in the 17-18 age group – and also the first one in the history of the sport to break 47 seconds in the 100 yard backsgtroke while still in the 17-18 age group. For the sake of college recuriting, ranking nationally is arguably valued rather highly when it is accomplished in the older age groups (most importantly in the 15-16 age group).

Kohlton made the Western Zone meet for the first time while he was in the 13-14 age group. His first and only trip to Zones was to Arizona back in 2003. He was a finalist his first time out.

Not only did Kohlton begin to set team records beginning with his arrival to the team in the 13-14 age group, he went on to set Central California Swimming records and the National Record. Kohlton continues to return to the Valley to share his experiences with youth who are in club swimming, high school, and summer league programs.

Here’s the article on Kohlton:

Our senior swimmers maintained an 80% improvement rate while at Sectionals even when considering time trials. Four of our seven swimmers improved 100% of their times, and the size of the time drops were more reminiscent of younger age group swimmers. Improvements in the 1000 and 1650 freestyles remained in the 20-second range, while shorter races such as 100 and 200 yard swims were improved by anywhere from three to seven seconds.

In a situation where all but one of our swimmers are experiencing their first short course Sectional meet in California and are among over 1000 swimmers who are competing including 2-time Olympic gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima, and while competing among the USC contengent that remains the dominant team competing at the meet, our swimmers are closing the gap as they move toward earning their second swim.

A total of nine team records were broken by two swimmers. Nathan Rhea broke six team records in the 13-14 age group (1000 free – 9:55.37, 200 breast – 2:12.81, 400 IM – 4:13.18, 200 free – 1:49.71, 500 free – 4:51.20, 1650 free – 16:41.65 and 100 breast – 1:02.90), while Sam Hansen broke two team records in the 15-over age group (1650 free – 16:39.40 & 1000 free – 10:03.44).

DAY 1

Day 1 opened with Sam Hansen who improved over five seconds in the 1000 freestyle event dropping to a 10:05.17 from a 10:10.42 which was swam as recently as three weeks ago at the Terrapin meet. Teammate Nathan Rhea swam in the next heat demolishing his previous 10:20.70 by swimming his first sub-10 minute time to a 9:55.37 thereby moving up in place from 60th to 46th.

DAY 2

Day 2 brought shorter distance races in the meet and time trials. Our breaststroke duo of Nathan Rhea and Sam Hansen resulted in four and three second improvements respectively. Nathan’s 200 breaststroke drops from a 2:16.47 to a 2:12.81, while Sam’s 200 breaststroke dropped from a 2:16.27 to a 2:13.28 which is our third fastest time in team history for the 15-over age group. Our breaststrokers were followed by our sprint freestylers with Colin Landweer swimming his first sub-50 time in the 100 free. Colin’s 49.48 now qualifies for the Mission Viejo Swim Meet of Champions. Joshua Tabers also swam the 100 freestyle in a 52.01.

Time Trials for day 2 brought in Thomas Brown who made a new Sectional time in the 100 freestyle as well as a Meet of Champions cut with his first sub-50 time of 49.14. Colin turned around and swam near even splits in his 50 free thereby nearly breaking the 23 barrier with a 23.07, while Sam Hansen doubled up his day by swimming a 1:02.52 in a time trial 100 breaststroke and improving over a second in that event. The day rounded out with Nathan Rhea improving three seconds in his 100 fly and swimming his first sub-minute time with a 58.16. Day three brings the 200 free and 400 IM.

DAY 3

Four TNT swimmers competed on day 3 of Sectionals which included the 200 freestyle and 400 IM events. After qualifying only two weeks earlier this month at the Tulare meet with a time of 1:48.63, Colin Landweer continues to improve, this time swimming slightly faster to a 1:48.47. Teammate Thomas Brown who qualified for the event as a bonus swam a 1:51.82 which was near his 1:50.92 that he established as a best time recently at the Tulare meet earlier this month.

Our IM swimmers included Sam Hansen swimming a time slightly faster than his 4:21.64 with a 4:21.57, while teammate Nathan Rhea continues his extraordinary performance improving his team record by over ten seconds from a 4:23.31 that he had set as recently as the Terrapin meet just last month. The new record is now established at 4:13.18.

To continue their streak, our four swimmers entered time trials on this third day at the meet, with Sam Hansen leading off in the 200 IM improving nearly two seconds from a 2:05.52 to a 2:03.53. Sam was followed by Thomas Brown whose 100 breaststroke was a 1:04.45 which nearly matched his Tulare time earlier this month of 1:04.46. Colin Landweer repeated a time trial in the 50 freestyle from yesterday as he was determined to go under 23 seconds, and does so with a 22.91. Colin is now .02 seconds from the Long Beach Grand Prix meet that will take place in January, and which will involve swimmers such as Michael Phelps. Time Trials for TNT concluded with Nathan Rhea improving his 200 backstroke by nearly 8 seconds from a 2:06.69 to a 1:58.98 which becomes the second fastest 13-14 200 backstroke time in the history of the team behind Kohlton Norys’s 1:57.59 set at Sectionals in 2004.

DAY 4

All TNT swimmers arrived at Long Beach on day 4 of competition. The day’s events included both sprint and distance events. Both Hannah Giles and Thomas Brown swam to their lifetime best times in the 50 freestyle as Hannah shaved nearly a quarter of a second from a 25.86 to a 25.64 while Thomas Brown matched his lifetime best of 22.24. Joshua Tabers swam within three tenths of his best with a 23.38.

Our distance swimmers included Sam Hansen and Nathan Rhea. Both swimmers who train together swam nearly identical times improving six and five seconds respectively. Sam Hansen finished with a 4:51.18 while Nathan Rhea finished with a 4:51.20 finishing in an overall place directly behind Sam.

Wesley Coles arrived on day 4 for his time trial in the 50 freestyle event improving that time by a half second to a 23.30. Hannah Giles competed solo in the girls 100 breaststroke time trial (swimming against the boys) and made a gallant effort chasing her male counterparts during the first half of the event. Hannah finished with a 1:11.80 for the 100 breaststroke. Our 4 x 100 freestyle relay composed of freestylers Wesley Coles, Joshua Tabers, Colin Landweer and Thomas Brown rounded out the night.

DAY 5

The fifth and final day of Sectionals included the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 1650 freestyle for TNT swimmers. Josh Tabers led off the day swimming 58.01 in his 100 backstroke, and he was followed by Nathan Rhea who continues his improvement trend dropping his 100 breaststroke to a 1:02.90.

The mile event was tackled by two TNT swimmers, Sam Hansen and Nathan Rhea. Our distance freestylers qualified for this Sectional meet with only this past summer’s long course times. Both swimmers focusing on achieving the minimum 16:59.99 cut swam performances that obliterated the standard. Sam Hansen improved his 17:00.95 to a 16:39.40 swimming his lifetime best in the 1000 freestyle along the way, even surpassing his improvement in the 1000 freestyle from Friday’s performance at this very meet. Nathan Rhea followed Sam in the very next heat with a 16:41.65 which was also a drastic improvement over his lifetime best of 17:05.58 that was swam as recently as the Terrapin meet only a few weeks ago.

Sectionals for TNT will ended with the 4 x 100 medley relay manned by Nathan Rhea, Sam Hansen, Wesley Coles and Colin Landweer.

Newly established team member Bobby Yribarren was one of eight TNT competitors at the Arizona Holiday Fest that took place during the same weekend of the Tulare meet. Bobby became the high point winner at the meet for the Senior division and made five Grand Prix cuts while competing there. His 4:45.24 in the 500 yard freestyle event breaks the past team record of 4:49.69 that was set by Kohlton Norys at Sectionals in 2005.

Our other finalists at the meet included Nathan Oskam who swam to the bonus final in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and Brianna Fleeman who finished 7th in the 1650 freestyle. Both Emily Lehrman and Emily Goodbar were first alternate in the 50 breaststroke and 100 backstroke events respectively.

Also competing at the meet were Bre Abell, Jake Goodbar, and Alexis Ledesma. The overall team improvement percentage among our Arizona team was 48%.

Sixteen year old Thomas Brown and fifteen year old Colin Landweer establish their first Sectional qualifying times while at the Tulare meet during the first weekend of December. Colin’s determined swim in the 200 yard freestyle earned him a 1:48.63 and was fast enough to slip just under the 1:48.79 cut. Thomas Brown’s sprint in the 50 yard freestyle ended with a time of 22.56 which was also fast enough for both the Long Beach Grand Prix cut of 22.89 and the Sectional cut of 22.59. Colin and Thomas will join current qualifiers who have expressed intent to compete at Sectionals, and these include Nathan Rhea, Sam Hansen, Josh Tabers and Hannah Giles. Current Grand Prix qualifiers include Katherine Bristow, Sam Hansen, Nathan Rhea, Thomas Brown, Josh Tabers and Bobby Yribarren. These swimmers may compete at the Grand Prix meet which is currently scheduled to include swimmers such as Michael Phelps, Matt Grievers and Katie Hoff.

Twelve year old Kyle Grissom training in Visalia set a new team record in the 11-12 boys 50 yard butterfly event. Kyle’s time of 28.25 broke a record that was set in 1994 by Jason Ricablanca at the AA meet in Cerritos. Kyle now holds three of the top four times on the team in the event. An additional accomplishment was Kyle’s 1:04.03 in the 100 butterfly, which was his second Western Zone qualifying time for next year’s Zone meet which will be held in San Jose during August.

Three hundred and thirty seven swimmers representing fourteen swim teams throughout Central California Swimming converged to compete in Tulare during the first weekend of December. The 100 swimmers of Tule Nation Tritons 1,479.5 points outscored all other teams, with Clovis Swim Club’s 1,005 points coming in second. The third place team was Fresno Dolphins Swim Team with 679 points.

Our final high point recipient was Cori Hoover who outscored all female swimmers 15 years and older at the meet.
