Three team records are set by four individuals (one who still remains unattached). The most established of the three records broken was that of the 50 yard freestyle event for the 13-14 year old boys. Fourteen year old Colin Landweer swims a 23.15 to break the existing team record by over two tenths of a second belonging to Josh Tabers (23.36) that was set at the Winter Invitational meet two years ago in December of 2007.

Eleven year old Khloe McCarthy battled with soon to be teammate Brianna Fleeman in the 1650 yard freestyle. Both swimmers swam faster than the existing team record set last month by Mallory Korenwinder while at the Hanford meet. Furthermore both Khloe’s 20:56.66 and Brianna’s 20:57.28 were fast enough to qualify for Arizona, and they did so while also qualifying for Arizona in the 1000 on the way to the 1650 yard freestyle cut. Khloe’s 20:56.66 becomes the new team record.

Fourteen year old Nathan Rhea is the remaining individual who had established a new team record while at the meet. Nathan improves his 100 yard breaststroke to a 1:03.28 to break his own team record that was set at the Tulare meet in February of this year.

TNT swimmers had left this Merced meet with much hardware. High Point awards included trophies for the top three point getters in each age group.

Preston Niayesh goes undefeated for first place High Point in the 7-8 boys division (80), while Nathan Rhea in the 13-14 boys division (76) and Kaleigh Botill in the 17-18 girls division (52) became the only other two TNT swimmers to swim away with the top honors of High Point.

Second place High Point went to Madison Droney in the 6-under girls division (34 points), Katelyn Herrera in the 11-12 girls division (67), Colin Landweer in the 13-14 boys division (71) and Hannah Giles in the 15-16 division (69). Third place went to Kailyn Fleeman in the 7-8 girls division (67), Mallory Korenwinder in the 11-12 girls division (66), Kyle Grissom in the 11-12 boys division (65), Alex Hansen in the 13-14 boys division (65), Wesley Coles in the 15-16 boys division (56), and Sam Hansen in the 17-18 boys division.

merced-points.JPG

Three hundred and eight swimmers represented twelve teams and an unattached group at the Merced meet. Although TNT was not the largest team at the meet (Clovis with 67 swimmers vs. TNT with 50 swimmers), Tule Nation Tritons placed first in the combined team points with 3,686 points over Bakersfield’s 3,569 points. Eleven teams scored at the meet. Event champions included Kaleigh Botill (15-over 50 free), Wesley Coles (15-over 200 fly), Hannah Giles (15-over 100 breast), Alex Hansen (13-14 500 free), Chris Hansen (11-12 50 breast & 1650 free), Katelyn Herrera (11-12 100 IM), Mallory Korenwinder (11-12 50 breast), Colin Landweer (13-14 50 free), Khloe McCarthy (11-12 1650 free), Preston Niayesh (8-under 50 breast, 100 fly, 50 back & 100 IM), and Nathan Rhea (13-14 100 breast, 100 back & 200 IM).

The overall team improvement percentage was 63%, well over the 50% that would be considered a successful meet. Twelve of our 42 who had previously recorded times on the team in events 50 yards or longer improved all events that they swam. These 12 included: Bre Abell, Tristian Abell, Connor Allison, Kaleigh Botill, Thomas Brown, Crista Droney, Madison Ekizian, Chris Hansen, Makayla Jordan, Colin Landweer, Makenna Mason and Ira Porchia.

2009-awards.JPG

TNT kicked off the 2009 awards night with a softball game between the swimmers and the adults. There were various accounts of what the final score ended up to be – something like adults 12, swimmers 11 – oh, but who’s counting anyway.

softball1.JPG softball2.JPG softball3.JPG

The true highlights for the night included the recipients for several awards that were announced later that evening. Shannon Nolan was our Master of Ceremonies as she guided us through the presentations. Twenty-two swimmers were recognized for obtaining enough points over the year to receive the Royal Swimmer award.

Nathan Rhea was then recognized for setting several Central California Swimming records while he was in the 11-12 age group and swimming for Merced Skimmers.

TNT had 60 swimmers entered at the Clovis meet which was the second larges team to Clovis’s 105 swimmers. The next largest team was Fresno Dolphins who brought 39 swimmers to the Clovis West facility. A total of 327 swimmers were entered in the meet.

Due to the non-traditional scoring of the IMX meet, Clovis accumulated 76,829 points to TNT’s 53,593 points. The third “team” was the 36 swimmers who were still unattached in Central California Swimming and they accumulated 23,169 points. Including the unattached group, there were 12 teams that competed at the meet from throughout Central California.

Age divisions were established for the 8-under, while the 9, 10, 11 and 12 year old divisions were separately awarded. Five of our young swimmers went undefeated at the meet for their respective ages by winning each of the five events that they had entered. Perfect performances in terms of placing went to: Kyle Grissom training in Visalia (age 11), Thys Jacobi training in Tulare (age 9), JD Koster training in Visalia(age 8), Preston Niayesh training in Tulare (age 8) and Blaire Williams training in Porterville (age 10).

Finally, 9-year old Dax Korenwinder achieves his first Far Western time standard in the 100 yard breaststroke event. His 1:28.57 is currently the 5th fastest time on record for TNT and approximately one second off of the team record held by Micah Storey and set in 1987 at the Fig Garden racquet club. Micah went on to qualify for the US Open and Junior Nationals while in high school.

Currently 15 TNT swimmers have short course qualifying times for the Senior meet held in Concord during the first weekend of November. The on-line entry deadline is Wednesday, October 28th, which leaves the Merced meet as the last weekend to qualify. Although some of our swimmers have achieved the long course qualifying time standard from the summer, congratulations to the following 15 swimmers who have achieved the B qualifying time in short course:

TNT had 81 swimmers that were attached to the team at the RCA meet, and 54 swimmers were unattached while there. Those were the top two team-based finishes at the meet in terms of point totals. The 72 first place finishes of TNT outpaced the second Gold medal count of Clovis (19 first place finishes), and the unattached 18 first place finishes. First place finishers went to approximately 40 of our swimmers: Fayyaz Ahamed (100 free & 50 fly), Owen Ansel (100 back & 200 IM), Kaleigh Botill (100 free, 100 fly & 200 back), Thomas Brown (200 breast), Callen Bruening (200 IM), Courtney Brummet (50 fly & 100 back), Greyson Canterbury (100 free, 50 fly & 1000 free), Wesley Coles (100 free, 100 fly, 400 IM & 200 free), Madison Droney (50 free), Hannah Giles (100 free, 200 breast & 200 back), Parker Giles (200 IM & 200 free), Kyle Grissom (100 free, 100 breast & 50 fly), Chris Hansen (100 breast & 200 free), Sam Hansen (100 free, 200 breast, 100 fly & 400 IM), Katelyn Herrera (100 free, 50 fly & 200 IM), Cori Hoover (100 free & 200 free), David Jacobs (100 fly), Michael Jia (50 fly), Dax Korenwinder (100 free, 100 breast & 100 back), Mallory Korenwinder (50 fly, 100 back & 200 IM), JD Koster (100 free), Jimmy Koster (200 free), Khloe McCarthy (200 free), Madison McCarthy (50 fly & 100 back), Mandi Mccaslin (100 breast & 200 IM), Landon Molin (200 back), Stephanie Nash (200 back), Mia Newkirk (100 breast), Jazmine Niayesh (100 free & 50 fly), Preston Niayesh (100 breast, 50 fly & 100 back), Jens Niederreiter (200 IM), Christopher Nolan (200 breast, 400 IM & 1000 free), Nathan Rhea (200 breast & 400 IM), Tenny Rizzo (100 fly & 200 back), Allison Ross (100 fly), JT Scott (100 back & 1000 free), Emily Shandrew (100 fly & 200 free), Carter Shaw (200 free), Taylor Shaw (200 back & 400 IM) and Jordan Stotts (100 free & 200 breast).

The team point ranking is presented in the following table:

rca-team-places.JPG

The team improvement percentage was an astounding 84% where 147 of the 176 events were improved. Thirty-nine of our swimmers improved all events entered. These included: Fayyaz Ahamed, Josh Avila, Kaleigh Botill, Callen Bruening, Courtney Brummet, Wesley Coles, Madison Ekizian, Chris Ewins, Madison Gilbert, Simon Grigoryan, Alex Hansen, Chris Hansen, Katelyn Herrera, Ashley Hughes, Thys Jacobi, Mathew Jacobs, Scott Jordan, Jakob Koorey, Mallory Korenwinder, JD Koster, Jimmy Koster, Joe Koster, Josh Koster, Colin Landweer, Conor Martin, Jason Matkin, Preston Niayesh, Kara Nino, Megan Nino, Christopher Nolan, Savanah Nolan, Nick Orton, Kyle Rizzo, Tenny Rizzo, Allison Ross, Emily Shandrew, Carter Shaw, Taylor Shaw and Jordan Stotts.

Additionally, two TNT team records were broken at the meet. Twelve year old Greyson Canterbury broke the 1000 freestyle record with his 12:11.48. This record was previously held by Christopher Nolan and set last year at the Chowchilla meet as a 12:49.38. Since 14 year old Nathan Rhea improved his 200 yard breaststroke event, and he was the current team record holder in that event, he became the only other individual on the team to break a record. His 2:16.47 at the meet shaves off one tenth of a second from the 13-14 team record that he had set at the Hanford inter-squad meet earlier this summer.

No, that’s not the total count of all swimmers at the meet, that’s just the swimmers who are uniting in efforts to form a competitive team in CCS. There were 84 swimmers already representing the TNT affiliation, and over 30 additional swimmers awaiting the 120 day requirement prior to becoming attached. This becomes the largest showing of any single team at any meet over the past several year of swimming in Central California Swimming. There were over 320 swimmers entered in the meet from the various clubs in Central California Swimming.

High point recognition was awarded to the top three point getters in each age division. Nineteen swimmers from TNT had received a high point award in their respective age group.

One team record was broken by Mallory Korenwinder. Mallory, who is currently ranked 7th nationally in the 50 meter and 100 meter breaststroke events for 11-year old girls, swam the 1650 freestyle for the first time. Her time of 21:23.31 was fast enough to reestablish the previous record that was held by Khloe McCarthy and set last year at the Tulare meet in February. The previous record was 21:36.01.

Sixty-two swimmers had times that were previously recorded with the team in events that were 50 yards or longer. Twenty-five of these swimmers improved all events that they entered, thereby maintaining a 100% improvement rate which contributed to the team’s 64% improvement overall. Congratulations to:

An additional 20 swimmers improved 50% or more of their times:

Our team of 24 swimmers that included 20 TNT and 4 unattached scored enough points for a third place finish at the Monterey Summer’s End Classic during the Memorial Day weekend. TNT swam away with high point awards in five age groups. The 6-under high point was awarded to Priscilla Niayesh of Visalia at COS for the girls and Hazim Ahamed training of Hanford for the boys. The 10-under boy’s award recipient was Fayyaz Ahamed also training in Hanford. The 13-14 award winners went to Hanford’s Hannah Giles for the girls and Tulare’s Nathan Rhea for the boys. Overall team points were led by Hannah Giles (156 points), Fayyaz Ahamed (154 points) and Greyson Canterbury (151 points).

Twenty swimmers had times in 50 yard or longer events that had been previously recorded with the team. Twelve of our 20 swimmers improved 100% of their times: Fayyaz Ahamed, Josh Avila, Kaleigh Botill, Callen Bruening, Greyson Canterbury, Makenna Mason, Michael Mason, Madison McCarthy, Landon Molin, Precilla Niayesh, Savanah Nolan and Breann Santos. Improvements at 50% or higher included Christopher Nolan (88%), JT Scott (86%), Athena Niayesh (80%) and Hazim Ahamed (60%). The overall team improvement percentage was 77%.

Welcome to Ashley Hughes (age 10), Colin Landweer (age 14), Blaire Williams (age 10) and Zelas Williams (age 6). These four swimmers now have established times recorded with TNT.

TNT had several swimmers who qualified to attend the Western Zone meet held in Hawaii this past week. Two of our swimmers competed at the meet, and both came away with multiple final swims and top eight finishes.

Fourteen year old Nathan Rhea competed in six individual events, and qualified for finals in five of his six events. His highest finish was in the 800 meter freestyle where he clocked at 9:02.30 which was twelve seconds faster than the time he just swam at the Clovis Senior Q meet less than a month earlier. His next highest finish was in the 400 IM event where his time of 4:55.72 was fast enough for a third place finish, and was nearly ten seconds faster than his previous life-time best swam at the Age Group Invite in June. His top eight performance continued with the 200 meter breaststroke (2:33.27) and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:11.13) where he had fourth place finishes in both events. The 100 breaststroke time ranks 45th in the nation for all 14 year old male swimmers. Nathan finally had a seventh place finish in the 400 meter freestyle where he swam a 4:28.36, after swimming a life-time best of 4:24.65 in the preliminary heats. Nathan broke four team records (400 IM, 100 breast, 400 free and 800 free) and improved his times in five of his six events. Nathan now qualifies for six Sectional events while only 14 years old.

hawaii4.JPG hawaii5.JPG nathan3.JPG

Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder finals in both breaststroke events, and becomes the only 11 year old in the 11-12 age group to earn a second swim. She may be the only 11 year old in all four Zone meets across the country (Western, Central, Eastern and Southern). Her highest finish was her third-place finish in the 50 meter breaststroke (36.94) with a time that currently ranks 7th nationally among all 11 year old girl swimmers. The current ranking takes into account Far Westerns, Western Zones and Central Zones. Considering that the Eastern Zones, which starts this week, has only two 11 year olds entered in the event at 39.41 and 39.46, and the top 11 year old in the Southern zone in Florida swam a 37.67, Mallory has a chance to hang on to a top 10 ranking. This is significant considering that she has the beginning of next long course season to reestablish a ranking at the same age. The 36.94 is also fast enough to break our team record while still on the bottom of the age group. The previous record was held by Joclyn Ford and was set at Zones in Hawaii (Maui) in 2002. Mallory’s second final was a sixth place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:21.65). That time also currently ranks 7th in the nation. The time qualifies for the Winter Invitational and is less than a second from the Speedo Grand Challenge cut.
