SAM HANSEN IMPROVES OVER ONE MINUTE AND TEN SECONDS AT WINTER INVITE

Four TNT swimmers qualified and attended the Winter Invitational meet held in Long Beach during the December 18th weekend. A closed Grapevine resulted in a nine hour drive on Thursday, the end of which would present sixteen year old Sam Hansen with a 1000 yard freestyle event. After being in the car for over eight hours, Sam still managed to drop over 30 seconds over his seeded time. Sam maintained a 100% improvement percentage by improving seven of seven events entered (six individual and one time trial). His cumulative improvement in seconds over his seeded times totaled over one minute in time (71.09 seconds of improvement). He had also made new qualifying times for meets such as the Grand Prix in Long Beach next month, and the Janet Evans at USC later in the year. Sam went on to break the team record in the 1000 free with his 10:13.26. The previous record was set by Allan Johnson in 1990 while competing at the All Star meet then. The record was 10:41.11. Sam also re-established his own team record in the 1650 by swimming a 17:00.95, just off the 16:59.99 time standard for Sectionals. Sam had set the previous record at the recent San Luis Obispo meet with a 17:18.88.

Thirteen year old Nathan Rhea improved four of five events leading to an improvement percentage of 80%. Nathan’s total improvement totaled 18.28 seconds over seeded times while at the meet. While at the meet, Nathan broke the team record in the 1650 free event with a 17:16.91. The previous record of 18:51.83 was held by Wesley Coles while at San Luis Obispo last month. Nathan went on to re-establish his own 100 breaststroke record. His previous record set at Chowchilla as a 1:04.90 is now a 1:04.59. His final record was in the 200 breaststroke event. His previous time of 2:19.29 swam at Chowchilla was at the time the thirteenth fastest time in the nation. Now that Nathan has dropped to a 2:18.09, his time may drop his national ranking. According to the current posting, Nathan’s time ranks ninth nationally.

Seventeen year old Katherine Bristow competed in two events while at the meet, and improved her 50 yard free event. This is a 50% improvement, and her 25.37 is now under the 25.39 time standard for Sectionals. Katherine and Josh Tabers is currently our only Sectional qualifiers. Katherine had left the meet to fly to Asia for a scuba diving expedition.

Fifteen year old Joshua Tabers, training in Hanford, was our fourth swimmers. He improved one of four events, and turned in a time of 1:52.40 in the 200 freestyle event.

TNT PLACES 24TH OUT OF 65 TEAMS AT WINTER AGE GROUP INVITATIONAL

Five of twelve swimmers scored, while three of them medaled taking the team to a 24th place finish in Cerritos during the December 12th weekend. Only the top eight finishers receive awards during this level of competition, although the top sixteen performances scored points. Our top point getter goes to ten year old Mallory Korenwinder who place top eight in four events (3rd in 100 IM, 3rd in 200 IM, 3rd in 50 breaststroke and 4th in 100 breast) and scored a total of 75 points at the meet. The next point getter went to ten year old Khloe McCarthy who placed top eight in two events (5th in 100 back and 6th in 200 IM) and scored a total of 54 points at the meet. The two girls were our only female swimmers who took our women’s score to 24th place as well as contributing to the overall 24th place team finish. Ten year old Jonathan Granada was the next point getter with 35 points which included his medal placing of 6th in the 100 fly. Twelve year old Josh Koster next scored 14 points with highest finishes of 12th in both the 200 free and 100 free events. Fourteen year old Wesley Coles was our final point getter with his highest place of 10th in the 50 free.

The overall improvement percentage was 56% and was led by 100% improvements from Greyson Canterbury (2 of 2 events improved), Jonathan Granada (6 of 6 events improved), Dax Korenwinder (1 of 1 event improved) and Josh Koster (6 of 6 events improved). Christopher Nolan improved 4 of 6 events for a 67% improvement, while Alex Hansen, Chris Hansen and Mallory Korenwinder each improved 50% of their times.

Although some may be soon aging up from their current age group, new Far Western cuts were achieved by three swimmers while at the meet. Ten year old Jonahan Granada leads in number of new cuts by qualifying in three new events: 100 fly, 200 free and 200 IM. Ten year old Khloe McCarthy’s time improvements bring two events further under the Far Western standard in the 200 IM and 100 free, while twelve year old Josh Koster makes his first cut in the 200 free event. Eleven year old Chris Hansen achieved his first Transition time standard in the 100 breaststroke event.

Our quad team of 11-12 year old boys who included Chris Nolan, Joshua Avila, Greyson Canterbury and Joshua Koster swam four relays at the meet and placed 8th in the 400 free relay, 9th in the 400 medley relay, 10th in the 200 free relay, and 12th in the 200 medley relay.

KATHERINE BRISTOW BREAKS TEAM RECORD AT TULARE MEET

Sixty-seven TNT swimmers braved the cold while they competed at the TNT meet in Tulare over the December 6-7 weekend. Out of the sixty-seven swimmers, only one team record was broken over the weekend. Seventeen year old Katherine Bristow swam a 1:10.25 in the 100 yard breaststroke event thereby breaking the team record previously held by Jordan Morillo and set at Sectionals in 2007. Katherine is currently our sole remaining Sectional qualifier who holds a qualifying time in the 200 IM. Her 1:10.25 now qualifies for the Grand Prix meet to be held in Long Beach in January, as well as the Janet Evans Invitational to be held at USC in May. Katherine will travel to Long Beach in two weeks to try and drop the 100 breaststroke time in order to qualify for Sectionals which will be held in Las Vegas at the end of February.

First place finishes at the meet went to several TNT swimmers: Josh Avila, age 12 (50 breaststroke); Katherine Bristow, age 17 (100 free, 100 back & 100 breast); Greyson Canterbury, age 11 (100 fly); Wesley Coles, age 14 (100 free, 100 fly & 200 breast); Alex Ellis, age 13 (100 back); Chris Ewins, age 12 (100 free & 50 free); Hannah Giles, age 14 (200 breast, 50 free & 100 breast); Simon Grigoryan, age 10 (100 breast); Cori Hoover, age 14 (100 free); Jazmine Niayesh, age 6 (25 fly); Savanah Nolan, age 8 (50 breast & 25 breast); Caleb Peltzer, age 6 (25 free); and Nathan Rhea, age 13 (100 back & 200 free).

The average improvement percentage for the team was 41%. Although less than the 50% that would suggest a successful meet in terms of improvement, this percentage is impressive when considering how cold the meet was. Nevertheless, the following eight swimmers still maintained a 100% improvement rate: Rebecca Bristow, Greyson Canterbury, Simon Grigoryan, Augus Guerrero, Bryan Horsting, Mathew Jacobs, Conor Martin and Landon Molin.

Our team also had several individuals who entered events that had never been recorded on the team prior to this meet. Most of these swimmers swam TNT for their first time: Max Bricker (age 14), Cameron Cardoza (7), Thys Jacobi (8), David Jacobs (44), Joshua Kelly (11), Jenna Koetsier (8), Makenna Mason (10), Corey Nolan (16), Noee Ortiz (12), Rebekah Schlick (15), Andrea Troung (8), Keshin Visahan (9), and Virginia Weece (18). Congratulations, and welcome to TNT.

Although our team did not have any high point winners for this meet going into the Winter Age Group Championships and the Winter Invitational, we had several individuals awarded as runner up in their various age groups. First runner up recipients went to: Madison McCarthy and Preston Niayesh both of the 7-8 age group, Chris Ewins of the 11-12 age group, and Hannah Giles of the 13-14 age group. Second runner up recipients went to Savanah Nolan and Dax Korenwinder both of the 7-8 age group, Parker Giles of the 9-10 age group, and Cori Hoover of the 13-14 age group.

TWENTY-FIVE QUALIFIERS FOR WINTER AGE GROUP

Fifty-one TNT swimmers competed at the Gobbler Classic in San Luis Obispo during the weekend before Thanksgiving this year. This meet was the last chance to qualify for the Southern California Swimming Winter Age Group Invitational (AA’s) to be held during the second weekend of next month in Cerritos. Twenty-three swimmers on our team had qualifying times going into the San Luis Obispo meet. Twenty-five swimmers now have qualifying times as a result of the final chance. Congratulations to:

One level of success at the meet was seen by six team records either falling or being set by four different swimmers while at the meet. Both thirteen year old Alex Hansen and fourteen year old Wesley Coles swam significantly faster than the previous team record held by Micah Story in the 1650 free. Micah set the team record in the mile while competing at the College of the Canyons in 1989 with a 20:24.87. Alex Hansen swam 19:20.13 and Wesley Coles swam an 18:51.83 setting the new record.

Twelve year old Luke Gregory also broke the team’s 11-12 200 yard backstroke record with his 2:42.03. This time former record holder Christopher Nolan’s 2:48.73. Christopher also swam faster than his pre-existing record by swimming 2:42.23, just shy of the newly established record.

Sixteen year old Sam Hansen has now set a record in the mile (1650) by swimming 17:18.88. Sam also currently holds the team’s 800 meter freestyle record that he set at the Clovis Senior Q meet last summer.

Most of the team records that were broken over the weekend were established by twelve year old Christopher Nolan. Chris has now established a new team record in the 1650 free with a 19:52.44. He also broke his own team record in the 200 yard breaststroke event with a 2:48.74 and broke his own team record in the 400 IM with a 5:09.72. The 1650 free and the 400 IM are also both under the Far Western time standards.

Twenty nine of our swimmers had improved 50% or more of their times that had been previously recorded on our team. Out of events 50 yards and longer, this is over 60% of our team improved 50% or more of their times, with the bulk of them with 100% improvements. Our ten swimmers who improved 100% of their times included: Nicholas Butler, Greyson Canterbury, Wesley Coles, Jonathan Granada, Jill Jackson, Branson Kelly, Jacqui Koster, Josh Koster, Andrea Wullschleger and Phillip Wullschleger.

SAMANTHA GOATES BREAKS LSU SCHOOL RECORD

Samantha Goates, who had trained with TNT from age 11 up until her senior year in high school, is now attending her first year of college at Louisiana State University. LSU began their recruiting efforts of Samantha while she was a Junior in high school. Samantha maintains many of our team records, has established Central California Swimming records and was also a nationally ranked age group swimmer while with TNT. Samantha also became Fresno Bee’s female Swimmer of the Year during her senior year in high school.

Last week Sam broke LSU’s school record in the 200 yard backstroke event while competing at Texas A&M last week. Her time of 1:57.52 currently is an NCAA Division 1 “B” cut (consideration time), and would have been last year’s NCAA Division 1 “A” cut (automatic time). Considering that the NCAA Division 1 long course time standards are considerably faster than the Olympic Trial time standard, this is truly a significant milestone.

JARED HOPPER GETS MARRIED

A long-time TNT swimmer, and one of the original team members as the club regained momentum during a re-birth, has committed to marriage. Jared was the first individual who transferred from the Visalia program to Tulare in pursuit of swimming accomplishments. He currently maintains six team records in multiple age groups, has competed at the Western Zones, Grand Prix, Sectional and Junior National levels in club swimming, and was one of only two of our swimmers to have had the opportunity to compete in the same heat against world renowned Michael Phelps. Jared swam against Michael Phelps at the Grand Prix meet held at Stanford University approximately three years ago.

Jared lived in Visalia where he graduated from Golden West High School, and his family had moved to Exeter. Soon after graduation from high school, Jared joined the Air Force to serve his country, and is currently stationed in Germany. Jared is now happily married to a young lady from Germany, and has moved into their first house with already a new addition to their newly created family – a puppy Weimaraner

TNT SWIMMERS CONVERGE AT THE CORN MAZE IN OCTOBER

 The corn maze conqueror goes to AJ Reid who found all stations by a large margin when compared to the rest of us. AJ emerged from the maze after some others who had thrown in the towel, but who were also subsequently sent back in by some mother gate-keepers to complete the task.

EIGHT OF THIRTY-FIVE SWIMMERS BRING HOME TOP THREE HIGH POINTS

High point recognition was awarded to the top three point getters at the Merced meet in Chowchilla. TNT is very proud of the eight swimmers who were recognized for this accomplishment. The first place high point award winners went to ten year old Mallory Korenwinder with 74 points and four first place finishes, ten year old Jonathan Granada with 69 points and seven first place finishes, and sixteen year old Sam Hansen with 67 points and seven first place finishes. Runner up high points went to eight year old Savanah Nolan and thirteen year old Nathan Rhea. Third place high point winners included: eight year old Dax Korenwinder, ten year old Khloe McCarthy and fourteen year old Cori Hoover.

Two TNT swimmers had established new team records while at the Merced meet in Chowchilla. Thirteen year old Nathan Rhea swam only six events, but set new records in three of them. Nathan goes under his 1:05.27 record in the 100 breaststroke by breaking 1:05. The new record is now 1:04.90. The other two records that Nathan set were those that he had established while at the Tulare meet just recently. The 200 breaststroke record is now 2:19.29, improved from 2:20.88, and the 400 IM record is now 4:28.99 which is improved from 4:33.77 set in Tulare.


Twelve year old Christopher Nolan becomes the first 11-12 year old male swimmer to swim the 1000 freestyle at Chowchilla, thereby becoming the record holder in that event. Christopher sets the new record at 12:49.38. Christopher currently holds five short course team records: 1000 free, 200 fly, 200 back, 200 breast and 400 IM.

NUMEROUS NEW CUTS MADE AT MERCED MEET IN CHOWCHILLA

Thirty four TNT swimmers participated at the unseasonably warm Merced meet hosted in Chowchilla. The highlights of the meet was in the new time standards made for Junior Olympics, Summer or Winter Age Group Invitational (former called AA’s), and Winter Invitational meets. At the conclusion of the Merced meet, twenty-four TNT swimmers have achieved the Winter Age Group time standard. Six of those twenty-four have also achieved a Winter Invitational time standard, a meet that is our first level of senior swimming at a more competitive level. Both meets will be held in Southern California, with the Age Group Invitational held at Cerritos on the December 12th weekend, and the Winter Invitational held at Long Beach the following weekend. Best of luck to those individuals who are attempting to achieve additional qualifying times, and to those individuals who are planning to qualify for the first time. The final opportunity to qualify for either meet will be the San Luis Obispo meet at the end of November. The deadline for the Winter Age Group Championships is December 1st, while the deadline for the Winter Invitational is December 10th. The next Tulare meet is December 6th and 7th.

Twenty five of our thirty five swimmers improved 50% or more of their times that had been previously recorded on our team. These are times for events 50 yards or longer. Seven of these swimmers improved all events entered at the meet. These seven include: Jake Caminero and brother Joshua Caminero, along with Agust Guerrero, Conor Martin, Preston Niayesh, Megan Nino and Christopher Nolan.

THREE TEAM RECORDS FALL TO THREE SWIMMERS AT CLOVIS SR Q

Seven TNT swimmers competed at the Clovis Senior Qualifying meet held at Clovis North during the July 10th weekend. The seven swimmers maintained an improvement percentage of 57% led by thirteen year old Nathan Rhea who improved all events entered and fifteen year old Joshua Tabers who also improved all events. Swimmers who improved 50% or more of their times included Sam Hansen, Kohlton Norys and Jordan Stotts.

While competing at the meet fifteen year old Sam Hansen breaks his pre-existing team record in the 800 meter freestyle by over ten seconds. The record that was established while at the Porterville meet now stands at 9:14.72, only six seconds off the Sectional time standard. After returning from Olympic Trials while eighteen, now nineteen year old Kohlton Norys also improves his previous record in the 400 meter freestyle that was set two years ago while competing at Junior Olympics at the age of 17. His 4:03.66 is over eleven seconds faster than the pre-existing record. Thirteen year old Nathan Rhea competed among the senior swimmers at the meet and successfully broke our team record in the 1500 meter freestyle event. Nathan’s 17:56.53 is now over 13 seconds faster than the team record of 18:09.62 previously set by Kohlton Norys while fourteen years of age at the Bakersfield meet in July of 2004.

Six of our seven swimmers scored at the meet by placing in the top 16 in their respective events. Point getters included Kohlton Norys who led the team in points by winning both the 100 and 400 meter freestyle events. Megan Eppler and Jordan Stotts each brought in 12 points as they both finished in 7th place in their events (100 free and 100 breaststroke respectively). Nathan Rhea scored in both breaststrokes finishing 10th in 200 and 13th in the 100 scoring 11 points. Sam Hansen scored in the largest number of events as he finished 16th in the 800 free, and 13th in both the 1500 free and 200 breaststroke events. Fifteen year old Josh Tabers scored 13th in the 200 back while he also went on to make a new Sectional cut in the 50 meter freestyle with a 26.05. Our 4×100 freestyle relay of Joshua Tabers, David Lombardi, Kohlton Norys and Jordan Stotts swam a 3:39.20 and placed 2nd by five seconds behind Clovis Swim Club and ahead of the seventeen other teams from Boston, Fresno Pacific, Navada, Santa Barbara, Fresno and Long Beach.
