Ridgecrest Highpoint

The team improvement percentage of 72% was led by five swimmers who improved 100% of there times at the Beat the Cold meet held indoors in Ridgecrest in late January, and they included: Jakob Kitt, Rylee Lord, Genoveve Mcilwaine, Ava Olson and Annlyn Haworth. Annlyn Haworth not only improved 100% of her times, but went on to compete uncontested, winning all eight events that she was entered into. Needless to say, she was the high point recipient for the 11-12 girls division. Hanford swimmer Dylan Hunt took home first place finishes in the 200 free and 100 breast, while being runner up in the 50 breast, 100 free, 50 free and 200 IM events. Those finishes, along with his 3rd place finish in the 100 IM earned enough points to be the top scoring 11-12 male swimmer at the meet. The only other event champions for TNT at the meet included Hanford’s Jillian Gaines winning both the 13-14 500 free and the 13-14 400 IM events.

Those who improved 50% or more of their times included: Isabella Klawitter (86%), Jillian Gaines (78%), Nathan Hunt (75%), Naomi Haworth (71%), Tanner Kelm (67%), and Devon Cardoza (50%).

At a meet where a vast majority of our swimmers didn’t improve a single event, a Selma duo of Wyatt Ward and Jonas Huckabay lead all TNT swimmers in overall improvement rates. Thirteen year old Wyatt Ward managed to improve 100% of his three events, while Jonas Huckabay improved five of his six events. 2015 Clovis Jan1

Fifty-five TNT swimmers started the New Year by competing at the first CCS meet for 2015, hosted by Clovis Swim Club. The improvement rate of 41% was respectable considering the early season. Most notable were the performances from Sienna Abernathy, Ciena Clarke, Jake Goodbar, Sophia Guzman, Jonas Huckabay, Tanner Kelm, Wyatt Ward and Bryce Wong who all improved 100% of their times. Selma swimmer Jonas Huckabay had the largest improvement, dropping over 22 seconds in the 13-14 boys 200 breaststroke event.

Tule Nation Tritons fielded ten event champions led by Visalia’s Skylar Ford, Selma’s Jackson Huckabay, and Alex Roberts. Alex Roberts maintained the largest number of wins taking home first place finishes in the 11-12 girls 200 free (2:16.31), 100 breast (1:18.23), 100 fly (1:11.16) and 50 back (32.77) events. Both Skylar Ford and Jackson Huckabay took home three wins each, with Skylar winning the 11-12 girls 50 fly (28.93), 100 back (1:07.17) and 200 IM (2:29.25), and Jackson taking home wins in the 11-12 boys 50 free (27.26), 100 fly (1:10.03) and 100 IM (1:09.81) events.

Our other event champions included: Quinton Davis (100 back – 1:06.28), Mackenzie Garza (50 free – 27.06), Lauren Geiger (100 fly – 1:03.76), Lucas Huckabay (100 IM – 1:41.76), Tyson Phillips (50 free – 51.36 and 50 back 1:00.73), Satoshi Shinkawa (200 breast – 2:28.85 and 200 IM – 2:10.98), and Sydnee Wilson (50 breast – 43.09 and 50 fly – 41.26).

2014 WAGC1

Twenty eight TNT swimmers, representing each of our programs, traveled to San Diego over the third weekend of December to compete among a total of 800 athletes in this year’s Winter Age Group Championships on Coronado Island. Sixteen of our swimmers contributed points to the overall team place by finishing high enough in their individual events to score for the team in either a final heat, or in a time-based event. Eleven year old Danielle Albright led the team in point accumulation by scoring in all nine events that she competed in, and accumulating 128 points in total. Her highest finish was 2nd place in both the 11-12 400 IM, and the 12-under 200 breaststroke (2:36.27). Her 400 IM time of 4:57.79 reestablishes a 4-year old record that was previously set as a 4:59.26 by Khloe McCarthy during a meet in Arizona back in 2010. Danielle’s new record currently stands as the 13th fastest nationally for girls of age 11.

Fourteen year old Preston Niayesh came in with the next highest point count with 58. Preston scored in four of his five events, with his highest finish including a pair of third places, one in the 200 breaststroke where he swam a time of 2:16.38, and the other in the 200 fly, after swimming 2:05.10 in the championship final heat. At 12, Katherine Sullivan also competed on the top of the age group, and swam a full slate of nine events, and accumulated 55 points. She scored in six of her events, with her highest place also being a 3rd place finish resulting from the time of 30.26 that she swam in the 50 backstroke event. Selma swimmer Satoshi Shinkawa was our next highest point getter with 46, and he scored in four of his events. Like Preston and Katherine, Satoshi’s highest place was also 3rd, but his resulted from the 56.18 in the 100 butterfly event. Selma swimmer Morgan Coddington was among the veteran Age Group Championship swimmers accumulating 24 points from the three events that she scored in. Morgan’s highest finish was 8th in the 200 breaststroke after swimming a time of 2:33.60 in the preliminary heats. A similar point accumulation came from Peyton Costa, his 21 points resulting partly from his highest finish of 8th in the 12-under 200 backstroke. His time of 2:29.36 is a new team record that went under Jonas Huckabay’s previous time of 2:32.73 that was set in January of 2013 during the All Star meet. The time stands as the 165th fastest nationally for boys of age 11.

WAGC2

JD Koster contributed 16 points from individual events, scoring in three of his seven, his highest place being 11th in both the 100 breast (1:06.87) and 200 breast (2:20.30) events. His time improvement in those two events alone was nearly 14 seconds. Visalia swimmer, Megan Riddenour, contributed 13 points from her 6th place finish in the 100 breaststroke after swimming a life-time best of 1:09.54 in the preliminary heats, and then shot off to East LA to compete in the same event at Sectionals. Ten year old Gage Price placed 8th (11 points) after swimming a 2:24.03 in the preliminary heats of the 10-under 200 free, while Selma swimmer, Jackson Huckabay, scored in two events to contribute 10 points, his highest place being 9th in the 50 fly with a time of 29.62.

A pair of our swimmers each earned 9 points, and Visalia’s 10-year old Daniel Haley did it in one event, finishing 9th in the 500 freestyle with a time drop of over 11 seconds. Consequently, Daniel’s improvement total to over 55 seconds at the meet, and this being done in only seven events. Selma’s Fourteen year old Jonas Huckaby scored in two events, his highest being the 11th place finish that resulted from his time of 1:02.40 in the 100 backstroke. Thirteen year old Visalia swimmer Janessa Bringe also scored in two events, and did so while competing at the bottom of the 13-14 age division. Her highest finish resulted from an improvement of over five seconds in the 200 fly (2:21.06), and 13th place finish there. A couple of our swimmers contributed two points each, and Visalia’s Benjamin Wheeler also did this while on the bottom of the age group (11-12). His time of 2:34.16 in the 200 backstroke was enough for a 15th place finish in the 12-under division. Twelve year old Priscilla Niayesh scored in two events, finishing 16th in each the 50 back (after swimming a 32.61 in prelims), and the 100 back (after swimming a time of 1:09.65 during the preliminary heats. Eleven year old Toby Jones was our only other swimmer to score in an individual event, and he did so by placing 16th in the 12-under 200 backstroke, his time of 2:34.66 resulting from an improvement of nearly 12 seconds.

Our other competitors at the meet, along with their highest place finish, included: Bryan Wong (15th – 50 breast & 100 breast), Lauren Geiger (17th – 100 fly), Layla Flores (18th – 50 breast), Tristan Gaines (21st – 1650 free), Quinton Davis (22nd in the 50 free), Bryce Wong (25th – 50 fly), Jacqui Koster (26th – 100 breast & 100 free), Garrison Price (28th – 100 back), Alexa Wong (who is 8 years old competing in, and placing among, the 10-under division at the meet: 28th – 50 back), Jeremiah Santillana (39th – 200 back), Justin Bos (34th – 100 fly), and Dylan Burr (40th – 200 back).

Seven swimmers from three different towns competed at the 2014 Winter Sectionals held at East LA College over the third weekend of December, and this year two of our swimmers earned second swims into the championship heat.

Fig Garden swimmer Lauren Davis earned two scoring swims in both breaststroke events, thereby earning the most points for the team. Her lifetime best of 1:05.34 in the 100 yard breaststroke took her to the consolation heat, and eventual 11th place finish there. Her top performance came in the 5th place finish of the 200 breaststroke that resulted from her back-to-back best times that ended with a 2:19.90 in that final heat. Lauren maintained the highest improvement percentage for any of our swimmers, improving four of her five events.

Selma swimmer Sierra Jett was our other finalist, and she did it with not only a championship final, and 5th place finish, in the 50 freestyle, but also with a team record. Sierra had previously set the team record as a 24.10 during Junior Olympics earlier this year, but had lost that record to training partner, Jillian Hatch, who had broken it one week prior to Sectionals to a 24.03 while at Junior Nationals. Now Sierra’s new team record, swimming twice under the 24-second mark at Sectionals, stands as 23.83, and is the 71st fastest nationally among all female 16-year old swimmers.

Our next highest finisher was Selma swimmer, Emily Goodbar, who swam 2:09.64 in the 200 fly, and finished 32nd in that event. Khloe McCarthy had her fastest 200 freestyle time at the meet with her 1:57.44, but her highest place came with the 45th place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:08.73). Owen Ansel finished 46th in his 200 breaststroke, after swimming 2:16.44 during the preliminary heats, while Katelyn Herrera had her highest finish as 88th in the 500 free (5:23.44). Making her first Sectional appearance at only 13-years old, Visalia swimmer Megan Ridenour showed no signs of backing down to the seasoned competition as she blasted a lifetime best of 1:08.96 in the 100 breaststroke, with sure signs of future accomplishments.

Three swimmers competed in Federal Way for the 2014 Winter USA Swimming Junior National meet that took place over the second weekend of December in Federal Way, Washington, two of whom competed there following USA Nationals in North Carolina. Both National swimmers earned a second swim in the bonus heat while at Junior Nationals, and both swimmers had their highest finish as 23rd. Kyle Grissom swam a 20.73 in the 50 freestyle in the preliminary heats to earn a spot in the bonus final, and his time is his lifetime best, swimming just under his swam at Nationals of 20.78 what was the team record for the 15-18 division. As a new 17-year old, his time stands as the 27th fastest nationally. Kyle also set a team record in the 100 fly when his preliminary performance was close enough to a final heat to earn a swim-off, in which he swam a time of 49.20. This is a new team record by .01 seconds under a swim he had at Sectionals last winter. He stands alone as the 15th fastest national for his age.

Mallory Korenwinder is our most experience swimmer at the National level, and she came away with a 23rd place finish in the 100 breaststroke, after swimming a 1:02.94 in the preliminary heats. Mallory competed in the highest number of events, which included the 200 IM (2:06.82), 100 fly (56.96), 100 breast, 100 free (52.82) and 200 breast (2:18.25) events.

2014 Junior Nationals

Selma swimmer Jillian Hatch competed at her first Junior National meet, and swam the 100 free, 200 free and 100 fly at the meet, with her highest place being 66th in the 200 free. Her 200 freestyle time of 1:51.40 was well under her previous team record of 1:53.35 that she swam at the NCSA Junior National meet this past March. The time stands as the 79th fastest nationally among all 16-year old female swimmers. Jillian set three team records at the meet, including the 100 free where her time of 52.20 was under the 52.57, again from the NCSA Junior National meet. This time stands as the 133rd fastest nationally since September of this year. Her final record was the 24.03 in the 50 free time trial, and this is a new record for Jillian as she goes under Sierra Jett’s previous record of 24.10 swam at Junior Nationals in February. This time is the 110th fastest nationally.

Tule Nation Tritons has two pre-collegiate qualifiers to the 2014 Winter USA Swimming Nationals that were held in Greensborough, North Carolina over the first weekend of December. Kyle Grissom qualified, and competed in two individual events, along with a time trial in the 100 yard freestyle. He came away with his highest place of 57th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.68. His other event, 50 freestyle, resulted in a life-time best of 20.78, and a new team record after swimming under his previous 15-18 team record of 20.84 that was set last year at this very same pool, but at the Winter Junior National meet. His time currently stands as the 13th fastest among 17-year old swimmers, in a reporting period that began this past September. Kyle also broke the 15-18 team record in the 100 freestyle, with a time of 46.32, swimming under Colin Landweer’s previous record of 46.72 that he had set two years ago at Sectionals. This time ranks 56th nationally.

Mallory Korenwider was our only other pre-collegiate qualifiers, and she qualified in three individual events. She had the highest place finish of the two, with a 52nd place in the 100 yard breaststroke, after swimming 1:03.52.

                         Merced1Merced2

Five of our nineteen TNT swimmers were among the 307 total athletes who attended the Merced Halloween meet over the fourth weekend of October came home with High Point distinctions, accumulating enough points from their combined events to place first, second or third in their respective age divisions. Two of our swimmers took home the top honors, and these included 11-year old Danielle Albright with 56 points, outplacing the next 11-12 swimmer by three points. Danielle was the event champion in three of the eight events she swam over the weekend, including the 50 breaststroke (34.29), 100 breaststroke (1:12.89) and 100 IM (1:09.41) events.  Our other first place high point went to Selma’s Jeremiah Santillana who outscored the next 15-over contender by eleven points. Jeremiah was also the event champion in three of his eight events, winning the 100 fly (59.72), 50 free (24.34) and 100 back (1:01.46) events.

Visalia’s stand-out swimmer, 10-year old Layla Flores, went home as our only 2nd place high point recipient for the 10-under division, outscoring the 3-place by 13 points. Layla matched the largest number of 1st place finishes on our entire team, winning four of her eight events, and was our only swimmer to place second in all her remaining events, thereby accumulating the most points for any TNT swimmer. Layla won the 100 free (1:02.92), 100 back (1:13.01), 100 IM (1:12.28) and 500 free (6:24.05) events. Two of our swimmers were recognized as the third place high point recipients, and these included 12-year old Katherine Sullivan who edged out the next competitor by one point, and was the event champion in 100 back (1:07.47), 200 IM (2:30.52), 100 fly (1:07.97) and 50 back (31.67) events. Hanford’s Tristain Gaies was the other 3rd place high recipient, outplacing his next competitor by nine points, and doing so by winning the 1000 freestyle event (11:29.44). He had a second place finish in the 100 back (1:06.91) and four third place finishes including the 100 breast (1:14.50), 100 fly (1:02.25), 50 free (25.06) and 200 IM (2:21.20) events.

Klaw Cap

Other event champions included Peyton Costa who won the 11-12 boys 1000 free (12:02.46), and Alex Roberts who won the 11-12 girls 200 free (2:16.41). Two swimmers improved 100% of their times at the meet, and this feat was accomplished all by Hanford swimmers, including 7-year old Drew Black, 8-year old Kate Frost, 10-year old Nathan Hunt, 9-year old Isabella Klawitter, and 13-year old Matthew Ross. Both 11-year old Dylan Hunt and 12-year old Katherine Sullivan maintained the next highest improvement rate at 75%. Congratulations to all.

Ninety-nine TNT swimmers returned to the Selma pool to compete at the meet that played host to over 400 athletes from throughout Central California Swimming, and two of our 99 came away undefeated. Twelve year old Jackson Huckabay seems intent on qualifying for next summer’s Zone meet in Hawaii, and his six wins are an indication that if any 12-year old boy can make the All Star Zone Team, he can. Seven year old brother, Lucas Huckabay, although on the bottom end of the 10-under spectrum for Western Zones, won’t be dissuaded by his age as he not only wins all five of his events, but drops chunks of time such as the nearly 9-second improvement in the 7-8 division of the 50 breaststroke.

Our additional event champions were plentiful, and included Sienna Abernathy (winning 2 events), Danielle Albright (winning 6), Isa Arueta (1), Emma Bettencourt (2), Janessa Bringe (4), Devon Cardoza (1), Morgan Coddington (2), Paige Coddington (2), Dominic Colvin (1), Peyton Costa (4), Alonso Escobedo (2), Layla Flores (5), Kate Frost (1), Jillian Gaines (3), Tristan Gaines (2), Keith Garcia (1), Lauren Geiger (1), Kyle Grissom (2), Daniel Haley (2), Brandon Hatch (2), Jillian Hatch (1), Annlyn Haworth (1), Isaac Herrera (1), Maya Herrera (2), Natali Herrera (1), Jonas Huckabay (1), Dylan Hunt (1), Toby Jones (4), Jakob Koorey (4), Mallory Korenwinder (3), JD Koster (1), Jimmy Koster (2), Rylee Lord (1), Khloe McCarthy (1), Priscilla Niayesh (1), Mariah Oliveira (2), Ashley Olson (1), Ava Olson (1), Kaylee Pallares (2), Maison Pallares (1), Emma Pena (1), Gage Price (5), Parker Princewill (1), Megan Ridenour (4), Alex Roberts (1), James Savage (5), Satoshi Shinkawa (5), Katherine Sullivan (1), Nicholas Vassylenko (1), Kylie Walker (3), Benjamin Wheeler (2), Alexa Wong (1), Blake Wong (2), Brett Wong (1), Bryan Wong (1), and Bryce Wong (1).

Congratulations to the following 13 swimmers for improving 100% of their times while at the meet: Dylan Burr, Jonna-Lee Bush, Dominic Colvin, Mallory Colvin, Keith Garcia, Isabella Klawitter, Preston Niayesh, Joseph Oliveira, James Savage, Nicholas Vassylenko, Hannah Williams, Alexa Wong, and Bryce Wong.
