Kohlton Norys, returning from Auburn, not only earned second swims while at the Janet Evans Invitational held in Irvine this past weekend, but also improved two of his swims. this is impressive considering that he’s on a break in training. Kohlton had also set new team records in the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly events. His 50 free record was previously owned by him. The old record was set at Sectionals in Bakersfield two years ago at a 25.13 while he was 17 years old. The new record now stands at a 23.68. The previous record in the 100 meter butterfly of 56.19 was set at Nationals in Indianapolis shortly after graduation from high school. The new record is now a 56.03.

Sam Hansen also competed at the JEI and improved his 1500 freestyle event by over ten seconds. Sam’s 17:31.01 is now the second fastest mile in the team’s history behind Kohlton’s 17:18.18 set at Junior Olympics back in 2006. Nathan Rhea also competed at the meet and improved his 200 meter backstroke by over 12 seconds. His time of 2:24.95 is now the ninth fastest time for a 13-14 boy in the team’s history. He is the second fastest 13-14 boy in the history of the team in this event, behind Kohlton Norys who holds the team record at 2:13.96. Josh Tabers of Hanford was the fourth and final TNT swimmer competing at the meet. Josh swam the 200 back, 100 back and 100 free events.

Christopher Nolan was the only other swimmer who broke a team record out of the 42 who competed at one of the two meets this past weekend. Among other events, Christopher reestablished his 11-12 team record in the 1500 freestyle by improving nearly two minutes. His old record of 21:50.47 was set at Merced in 2008, and now stands at 19:51.79. Christopher also achieved a new Age Group Invitational time standard for the 13-14 age group in that event.

That’s the heading of the press release that came out of Auburn University stating that Kolton’s 45.26 edged out Cal Berkley’s David Russel by .04 seconds. It was a great race to the finish. Combined with the other events and diving, at the Auburn takes the title of NCAA Champion. Kohlton’s contribution included two winning relays, a seventh place finish in the 200 backstroke, and winning the 100 backstroke. His 45.13 from his morning swim was only about a half second off of Ryan Lochte’s American Record of 44.60 which he set at his NCAA meet in March of 2006. Kohlton became the first Auburn swimmer in that school’s history to win a 100 backstroke event at the NCAA meet. Congratulations Kohlton – TNT is very proud of you.

Forty nine TNT swimmers competed at the Porterville long course meet during the second weekend of March. Several of our young swimmers noticed and commented on their observation that TNT swimmers took up many of the lanes in various heats while at the meet. The Porterville meet was the first long course meet in the state, and gave our swimmers an opportunity to reestablish times for the long course season. Fifty-three TNT swimmers competed at Junior Olympics this February, making it the largest showing in the history of the club at any Junior Olympic championship meet. Forty-nine of our swimmers qualified and participated in individual events. TNT placed fifth at the meet that hosted twenty-nine teams. With a total of 1,767 points, TNT was the third highest placed Central California Swimming team. Canyons Aquatics won with 4,207 points, with Clovis second. Bakersfield placed fourth with 2,226 and TNT placed behind Bakersfield.

Our 1,767 points was an accumulation from 1,174 points gained by individual events and 593 points gained by relays. Our top point getters were led by Mallory Korenwinder (124 points), Dax Korenwinder (123), Nathan Rhea (115), and Jonathan Granada (110). The following thirty-four swimmers scored in individual events while at the meet.

Nine team records fell to three individuals at the meet, and these were led by Jonathan Granada. Ten year old Jonathan breaks his own record with a 6:14.61 in the 500 free event by improving nearly ten seconds. His 100 fly improved over three seconds to a 1:12.09 to break Micah Storey’s record that was set back in 1987 at the Fig Garden Racket Club. Jonathan went on to set the 200 IM record by improving that event by over five seconds. His 2:41.68 is faster than Jason Ricablanca’s record that was established that was set at the Monterey meet in 1992. The final 10-under boys record that was broken at the meet was Jonathan’s four and a half second drop to a 1:04.52 in the 100 free. This former record also belonged to Jason Ricablanca and was set at the RCA meet in 1992.

Fourteen year old Nathan Rhea broke three records while at the meet. Nathan improves over thirty-five seconds in the 1000 free event to a 10:20.70 and breaks Allan Johnson’s record that was set at Far Westerns in 1989. He went on to break the 500 free team record with a 4:56.21; the record formerly belonged to Kohlton Norys and was set at Far Westerns in 2004. His final record was an improvement of his own 400 IM. Nathan had previously set the record in Chowchilla this past October, and improves it by over three seconds to a 4:25.98.The final record breaker was ten year old Mallory Korenwinder. Mallory set two new team records, the first being a 34.16 in the 50 breaststroke event. This time is currently the second fastest time swam in the nation this year by any 10 year old girl. The previous record was held by Lindsey Storey and was set at the RCA meet in 1994. Mallory’s 1:15.99 also broke Lindsey’s record that was set in 1994 at Far Westerns. Her time is currently the sixth fastest in the nation for all 10 year olds.  Additionally, thirty of our swimmers improved 50% or more of their times. Ten of our swimmers improved all events entered. These included Bryan Brown, Courtney Burmmet, Hannah Giles, Luke Gregory, Katelyn Herrera, Emily Jacobs, Conor Martin, Makenna Mason, Shanti Matkin and Sarah Peltzer.

Thank you goes to Mike and Tami McCarthy for chartering a luxury bus for our team’s travel to the Arco Arena for the meet and greet event with Michael Phelps. Thanks also go to Shauna Rhea who coordinated the ticket purchasing and communicated with the Sacramento Kings staff. While there Michael shared his experiences of the Olympics and also provided some insight into the amount of training that he underwent to reach the goal of wining eight gold medals at the Olympics. Our swimmers had nearly front row seats to see the presentation by Michael.

Unfortunately, the Sacramento Kings did not fair very well, as they lost their game slightly to former champions, Boston Celtics. Nevertheless, we hope it will be a memorable experience, thanks to the McCarthy’s and Shauna Rhea.
