Seven TNT swimmers competed at the Cal Invitational hosted and run by the Cal Berkley Men’s swim team over the January 19-20 weekend. This approved meet that serves as a fundraiser for the defending NCAA Cal men’s team offered a trials and finals formatted meet with the top 16 swimmers being considered finalist for each event. All seven TNT swimmers finished in the top-16 in at least one event at the meet.

Top 16 finalists were led by our top finisher, Chris Nolan, who swam to three championship finishes including a 3rd place finish in both the 200 fly (1:55.65) and 200 IM (2:00.77), a 6th place finish in the 400 IM (4:16.73) and a 7th place finish in the 100 breast (1:02.82). Only two other TNT swimmers finished in the top-8, and these included Matlyn Morris who swam to a 4th place finish in the 100 back (1:01.05) as well as a 6th place finish in the 200 back (2:18.30), along with Khloe McCarthy who finished 5th in the 100 back with a time of 2:13.37.

Fullerton Aquatic Swim Team (FAST) hosted the first long course meet for the year taking place in California, and TNT had 14 swimmers attend their event over the January 26-27 weekend. At a swim meet with initial timelines that ran well past 5:00 PM prior to scratches, our team still maintained three swimmers with top-8 finishes. Mallory Korenwinder was our only event champion winning the 100 meter breaststroke event with a time of 1:14.29. She also swam to a 3rd place finish in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:47.50. Chris Nolan had our next highest finish with two 5th places in both the 100 meter fly and 200 meter fly with times of 59.26 and 2:10.25 respectively. Our remaining top-8 finisher was Khloe McCarthy who came away with a 7th place finish in the 400 meter IM after swimming a time of 5:26.32.

Colin Landweer and Matlyn Morris each came away with top-16 finishes with Colin finishing 9th in the 50 meter free (25.68), and Matlyn finishing 12th in the 100 meter backstroke (1:12.78) events.

Time improvements were rather sparse after three weeks of training into the season; however, Matlyn Morris and Alex Metzner still managed to come away with 100% improvement rates. Matlyn improved six of six events, while Alex improved both qualified events, and swam the 100 meter freestyle for the first time with the club.

The CCS Invitational held at Bullard High School and hosted by Fresno Dolphins as the first swim meet in the new year recognized high point recipients for each age from six to fourteen. Four of our 47 TNT swimmers performed at a level that deserved such recognition, and led the team to its second place finish behind the 157 member Clovis Swim Club.

Natali Herrera of Selma led all seven year old girls in points as she took home the high point for that age by swimming seven events for the meet, and scoring in six of them. Her 29 points made her the only 7-year old girl with a double-digit score. Her highest place was second in the 7-8 age group 100 yard backstroke (1:44.68). Damian Brown took home the honor by leading all boys who were seven years old. His 31 points led the second place by 20 points. Damian swam six events in the 7-8 division, and placed no lower than 5th in any of them. He had three 3rd place finishes in the age group that included his 50 breaststroke (1:00.38), 50 free (40.01), and 100 IM (1:56.62). Daniel Haley was the winner among 8-year old boys with 47 points. Daniel scored in seven events, and was the event champion in both the 7-8 boys 50 backstroke (46.59) and 8-under 100 IM (1:40.45) events. In his seven events, Daniel placed top two in five of them. Danielle Albright led all 9-year old girls, an age division that fielded the top four point getters as TNT swimmers (Danielle Albright, Kylie Walker, Peyton Mckinzie, & Layla Flores in that order). Danielle competed in eight events, and was the event champion in four of the eight events that she competed in, including the 50 breaststroke (37.15), 200 free (2:25.93), 100 breaststroke (1:21.96) and 100 IM (1:16.45) events.

Our additional event champions included Joseph Cobarrubias of Fig Garden who took home the win in the 13-over 50 freestyle (22.51), Skylar Ford of Visalia who was the event champion in thee of her four 9-10 girl events on day 1, including the 100 free (1:01.55), 50 fly (30.63) and 100 back (1:13.75) events. Ten year old Jackson Huckabay went undefeated in the 9-10 boys division, winning all four of his events on Saturday: 100 free (1:05.70), 50 breast (39.62), 200 IM (2:42.16), and 200 free (2:23.08). London Jones was the event champion for the 6-under girls 25 fly (25.08), while Matlyn Morris marked her return with four wins in the 13-over division that included the 100 free (54.66), 200 back (2:17.58), 50 free (25.27), and 100 back (1:02.99) events. Ten year old Alex Roberts took home the win in the 50 backstroke (35.70), while Selma’s Satoshi Shinkawa was the event champion in the 11-12 boys 50 fly (29.15). Runner-up high point swimmer, nine-year old Kylie Walker became the event champion in the 9-10 division in both the 50 free (30.35) and the 100 fly (1:20.49) events.

Nine year old Peyton Mckinzie was one of only two TNT swimmers to maintain a 100% improvement rate among the 47 who entered the meet. She swam improvements in five events that had been previously recorded with the team (100 free, 50 breast, 200 free, 50 free and 100 IM), and swam three events for the first time (100 back, 100 breast and 100 fly). Her highest finish was in the 9-10 girls 100 fly event where her time of 1:28.47 was fast enough for a third place finish in the event. Our other 100% improvement came from Brittney Vierra who improved her 50 freestyle by over two and a half seconds. She also swam the 200 breaststroke event in the 13-over division for the first time.

A welcome to the team goes to 12-year old Brandon Hatch who records five new times with the team in the 11-12 boys division. His highest finish came in the 200 freestyle where his time of 2:20.64 earned a 4th place finish in the event.

Despite a missed relay that had a potential of bringing in at least 40 points based on the entry time and final results, and illness that befell the team, our 14 Tule Nation Triton swimmers were able to still maintain a 2nd place finish in the small teams division, a mere 44 points behind the first place Roadrunner team of Bakersfield, accumulating enough points to outscore all but one of the 32 teams that scored in the small team division at the 2012 Winter Sectional meet. Swimmers who earned points in individual events were led by Kohlton Norys who accumulated 52 points that resulted from a 1st place finish in the 100 backstroke (46.77) that became not only a new team record, but was nearly two seconds under the previous meet record of 48.03 that was set in 2010 by former Big West 100 back Champion, and former US Pan American Games Qualifier, Eddie Erazo. Kohlton had also set a team record in the 50 freestyle (20.16) by winning the consolation final by a rather large margin.

2012-winter-sectioanl-1.jpg

Our next highest point source came from Christopher Nolan contributing 29 points to the team effort, the bulk of which came from his 5th place finish in the 200 fly (1:50.76). His time improved his team record that he had set at the Terrapin meet this past month, and stood as the 11th fastest in the nation at the time of the swim meet for all boys of age 16, only one place out of what will be nationally recognized. Chris also placed 21st in the 100 fly (51.46) scoring points in the bonus heat.

Mallory Korenwinder scored on the first day of the meet with an 11th place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.29) and a time improvement that followed her improvement at Junior Nationals one week earlier while competing at the University of Tennessee. Her time improves her team record by over two seconds, stands now as the CCS record that previously belonged to Jenni Brelsford of Fig Garden who set the record as 2:18.61 in 1992, and is currently the fifth fastest time nationally for the gender and age. Her 200 IM time of 2:09.94 was achieved in a time trial event, and is nearly two seconds under Samantha Goates team record 2:11.43 that was set at Junior Olympics in 2005. This time was the 73rd fastest nationally at the time it was swum.

2012-winter-sectional-2.jpg 2012-winter-sectional-3.jpg

The next highest point source from individual events came from Nathan Rhea who earned the largest number of second swims when compared to anyone on the team. His 400 IM time of 4:04.16 was better than his previous team record of 4:05.39 that was set in 2010 at the same pool. The time stood at 63 for a national ranking among 17-year old male swimmers at the time it was swum. Nathan had also set the team record in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.01) that was an improvement of 2:09.46 that was set at Sectionals in 2010 by Sam Hansen, and Nathan’s time ranked 67th for the national age and gender during the weekend. His final second swim came in the 200 backstroke (1:52.96). Nathan placed 20th in the 400 IM, and 23rd in the other two events.

Colin Landweer made it back in the 100 freestyle (46.72) event on our first day of the meet with a 22nd place tie and a time that was is under 2008 Olympic Trial qualifier, Bradley Matsumoto’s team record of 46.88 set at the Winter Invitational in 2004. Colin’s time stood as the 91st fastest nationally among all 18-year old male swimmers at the time of the meet.

Team records were also set by Lauren Davis of Fig Garden who improved her own 15-16 team record in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.94) from the time she had set at the Selma meet three months ago as 2:33.23 for a national ranking of 113. She had also gone under Katherine Bristow’s previous record of 1:10.25 that was set at the Tulare meet in 2008 in the 100 breaststroke event. Lauren’s new record is now 1:09.97 and currently stands as the 274th fastest nationally for all girls at age 15.

2012-winter-sectioanl-4.jpg

A relative newcomer to the team, fourteen year old Jillian Hatch who trains in the Selma program had reestablished three team records belonging to two of our most successful swimmers of the past. Jillian swam a time of 24.26 in the 50 freestyle, thereby breaking the record belonging to Samantha Goates that she had set at the Winter Invitational in 2003 as a 24.47. The new record now stands as the 50th fastest nationally for girls of age 14 during the weekend of the meet. Her 100 free time of 52.70 was also under Samantha Goats record 53.36 that was set at Junior Olympics in 2005, and Jillian’s time stood as the 59th fastest nationally when it was swum. Finally, Megan Eppler had set the 500 freestyle record as a 5:08.10 in 2005 at the Winter Invitational, and Jillian’s 5:07.58 now stands as the new record, and was the 84th fastest time swam nationally for the gender and age during that weekend.

Our remaining qualifiers for the meet included Emily Goodbar of Selma who finished 32nd in the 200 fly (2:06.53), Kyle Grissom who finished 36th in the 200 fly (1:59.52), Devan Marshall of Visalia who finished 62nd in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.56), Matthew Tashima  who finished 75th in the 50 free (22.22), Khloe McCarthy who finished 82nd in the 400 IM (4:44.84), Joseph Cobarrubias of Fig Gardenwho finished 102nd in the 100 free (49.05), and Josh Avila who finished 128th in the 50 free (23.30).

Although not all teams attending the Winter Age Group Championships maintain a quality of athlete to score points at the meet, where only the top 8 individuals swim finals and the top 16 individuals score points, 37 teams did score with points ranging from Mission Viejo’s 3,478 points to Max Aquatic’s 3 points. Our TNT Winter Age Group Team of 27 swimmers scored enough points (826) to place the team as the 12th highest performing team at one of the largest age group championship meets in Southern California Swimming.

Sixteen of our 27 athletes generated scores in individual events while at the meet, and these were led by 10-year old Skylar Ford of Visalia who swam away with a championship win in the 50 yard butterfly event with a time of 30.33, three runner up events that included the 100 breaststroke (1:19.20), 50 free (27.61) and 50 breaststroke, as well as third place finishes in two events where she set team records. These two events included the 50 back (32.84) and 100 free (1:00.99) events. Skylar had set the 100 free record at the Merced meet earlier as a 1:02.57. Only 41 other 10-year old girls swam as fast in the 100 free anywhere in the nation this year. Jill Edminster had previously set the 50 backstroke record at Far Westerns in 1990 with a time of 32.96, and now Skylar’s new record stands as the 82nd fastest time in the nation for any 10-year old girl.

Jackson Huckabay of Selma led all male TNT swimmers in point accumulation from individual events. Jackson joined Skylar in scoring in all events entered, with his highest performance coming as a second place finish in the 50 breaststroke (37.96) event. He followed this by two third place finishes including the 100 breaststroke (1:23.13) and 50 free (29.06) events. Jackson also finished 6th in the 100 free (1:03.83), 7th in the 100 IM (1:13.91) and 15th in the 50 fly (35.04).

The table below reflects all 16 swimmers’ point accumulation from individual events.

RELAYS

 10-ugirlsrelay2012wag.JPG

The remaining team points came from relay swims that contributed to well more than half of the overall team points. Every relay that TNT participated in scored while at the meet, and three of them resulted in new team records. Our first record-breaking relay was the 15-over 800 freestyle relay composed of Josh Koster, Noah Haworth, Cody Nash and Conor Martin whose time of 7:27.58 was under the 7:36.13 that Colin Landweer, Nathan Rhea, Sam Hansen and Thomas Brown had set as the record in 2010 at Junior Olympics. The 11-12 boys relay of Alonso Escobedo, Preston Niayesh, JD Koster and Jonas Huckabay reset the 11-12 boys 400 Medley Relay by a large margin swimming 4:27.00 for a 3rd place medal and resetting the 4:42.06 record established by Micah Ruiz, Preston Niayesh, Parker Giles and JD Koster at Junior Olympics last year. The CCS Record in that event is 4:17.65 and our TNT boy’s time currently stands as the 30th fastest time nationally, with eight of the top-30 times resulting from one of the three Winter Age Group Championship meets that took place over the weekend. Our final relay record was set by the 10-under girls Priscilla Niayesh, Daniel Albright, Skylar Fordand Katherine Sullivan whose time of 2:19.94 in the 200 Meldley Relay went under the 2:21.13 time that was set as the record by Janessa Bringe, Daniellle Albright Pricilla Niayesh and Skylar Ford also at last year’s Junior Olympcis. The current CCS Record stands as 2:12.52.

Preston Niayesh joined Skylar Ford as the only other individual to set a team record at the meet, and he did so with a time of 2:40.80 in the 11-12 boys 200 breaststroke event with nearly a six-second improvement in the event. The previous record was held by Chris Hansen as 2:42.23, and set at the San Luis Obispo meet three years ago in 2009. Preston’s time currently stands as the 118th fastest in the nation for any boy at age 12.

Preston was also among eight TNT swimmers who improved 100% of their times at the meet. He is joined by Jonas Huckabay of Selma who improved 6 of 6 events, Sierra Jettwho also trains in Selma, and Conor Martin who all improved all six allowable events. Visalia swimmers Jimmy Koster and Paul Alexander Lerro improved each of their three events at the meet, while Andrea Morales improved both of her events.

The following is a list of each swimmer along with an event that reflected one of their highest place finishes. Many of our swimmers competed while on the bottom of the age group, and are in prime position for a top-8 finish when they move to the top of the age group.

After a strong second day of Sectionals, multiple finalists of Tule Nation Tritons resulted in the team scoring enough points in individual events to place the team in a tie for first place for the small-team division. Fourteen year old Mallory Korenwinder led the team with dual championship final swims highlighted by a second place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke event with a time of 1:12.21 which is two one-hundredths of a second (.02) off of this past Olympic Trial time standard. Her performance not only stands as a new team record, but also breaks the Central California Swimming record that was established as a 1:13.23 in 1993. The time currently ranks as the 6th fastest time for any 14-year old girl in the nation. Her second championship final swim came in the 200 breaststroke where her new team record of 2:39.28 was enough for a 6th place finish in the event. That time currently ranks 14th nationally.

2012-lc-sectionals1.jpg

Two of our swimmers also advanced to the consolation final (places 9-16), and both swims resulted in newly established team records. Sam Hansen returned from completing his first collegiate year at D-1 Canisius College in Buffalo, New York to win the consolation heat in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.99. This is currently the 49th fastest time in the nation for all 19-year old male swimmers. Sam also earned a second swim by advancing to the D final in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.24 earning him a 27th place finish there.

Chris Nolan was our only other swimmer who advanced to the B final, and he did so in the 200 meter butterfly event with a time of 2:05.46. This new team record currently stands as the 20th fastest time in the nation for all 16-year old male swimmers, and the fastest time in the consolation heat. His time also allows him to join Mallory Korenwinder as they attend the summer Junior Nationals in Indianapolis, a swim meet that takes place the week of August 13-17.

Wesley Coles was our only swimmer who scored in the C final with a 20th place finish in the 200 fly event, and a time of 2:07.82. Wesley was also our only swimmer with four finals, placing 28th in each of three additional events: 200 free (1:57.29), 400 free (4:10.61), and 100 fly (58.03). He had also finished in the top 32 with a 27th place finish in the 1500 freestyle (16:42.83). Each D-final swim was a personal best time for Wesley.

Attending her first Sectional meet, and entering the meet with only a yard qualifying time, fifteen year old Laruen Davis of Fig Garden earned a second swim in the 200 breaststroke event while competing in the preliminary heats from the B-session.  The commanding lead over the field that her preliminary time of 2:45.55 presented was a strong indication of a potential second swim that materialized. Her time became a new team record as she swam well below the existing record of 2:52.49 set by Joclyn Ford at Junior Olympics in 2005. Lauren’s time currently stands as the 94th fastest time in the nation. She had also set a new team record in the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:18.15, and this time ranks 159th nationally.

Nathan Rhea was our only remaining swimmer to earn a second swim, and he did so in the 400 IM event. His time of 4:43.17 was fast enough for a 27th place finish, and was his second fastest time on record. Congratulations to all sixteen swimmers who qualified and competed at Sectionals. The following list reflects our remaining swimmers and their highest placed event:

2012-lc-sectional-places.JPG

Besides Lauren Davis, Sam Hansen, Mallory Korenwinder, and Chris Nolan, two additional swimmers set new team records while at Sectionals. After setting two records at the LA Invite that took place just two weeks earlier, one of them being in the 100 fly, Emily Goodbar of Selma improved her 100 fly again, this time to a 1:06.90. The time gave her a 60th place finish at the meet, and currently ranks 216th nationally for all 15-year old girls.

Kyle Grissom, competing at Sectionals while only 14 years old, improved two of his pre-existing team records that he had set while competing at the Age Group Invitational last month. Kyle swam 2:14.67 in the 200 fly which places him as the 50th fastest 14-year old male swimmer in the nation for the event. His 25.89 in the 50 free stands as the 89th fastest time nationally.

2012-lc-sectionals2.jpg

The team improvement percentage was 51% with nine of our sixteen swimmers improving 50% or more of their events. An improvement rate of 50% or higher is considered very respectable for senior-level athletes, and our rate was led by Joseph Cobarrubias and Matt Tashima who improved 100% of times that had been previously recorded with the team. Those who improved 50% or more of their times included: Wes Coles (83%), Mallory Korenwinder (83%), Josh Avila (67%), Lauren Davis (67%), Emily Goodbar (60%), Sam Hansen (50%) and Colin Landweer (50%)

Five TNT swimmers competed at the Swimvitational meet that was held in the Olympic Trial pool at Omaha, Nebraska. The meet is intended for those operating the Olympic Trials the opportunity to fine tune any management adjustments necessary in advance of running the actual Olympic Trials. This also gives athletes a late opportunity to qualify for Trials, or an opportunity for athletes such as Matt Grievers and Amanda Beard, a tune-up for what will be their focus meet in a matter of weeks.

Swimming back-to-back weekends, our five who attended the Santa Clara International, flew to Omaha for the experience. Four of our swimmers earned a second swim with Chris Nolan as our highest finisher in the 200 fly event with a time of 2:06.30 which was one one-hudreth of a second off of the summer Junior National time standard. Tule Nation Tritons doubled up in the championship final heat for the event with Chris’s 6th place finish followed by Wesley Cole’s 8th place finish after an impressive 2:08.83 swum in the preliminary heats.

Nathan Rhea earned his second swim in the 400 IM event by swimming a time of 4:47.96 in the bonus heat for an overall 18th place finish, while Mallory Korenwider also swam in the bonus heat with her lifetime best 100 meter breaststroke time of 1:15.27 for a 21st place finish after just entering the heat in 27th place. Colin Landweer’s highest place finish came in the 200 IM where his time of 2:16.77 was enough for a 41st place finish in the event.

2012-swimvitational-team.jpg

Three individual team records were established at the meet, two of which belonged to Mallory Korenwinder. Mallory set the team record at the Santa Clara International meet with a time of 2:46.53 the weekend prior to Omaha, and while at Omaha she finished 41st in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:45.62. The time stands as the 38th fastest time in the nation for all 14-year old girls. Her time of 1:15.27 also outperformed her swim at Santa Clara where her time of 1:15.72 was also a team record. Her Omaha time currently stands as the 21st ranked time nationally.

Chris Nolan came away with the only other individual team record, and he did so by also improving his Santa Clara time in the 200 fly event. Wesley Coles had set the team record at Junior Nationals last summer as a 2:07.05, and although Chris missed the record during both prelim and final swims at Santa Clara and missed it during his prelim swim in Omaha, he was under the record during the championship final heat in Omaha. His time of 2:06.30 now stands as the 16th fastest time nationally for all 16 year olds. Chris Nolan turned 16 only one week prior to the Omaha meet.

Our 4×200 free relay was led off by Chris Nolan in Omaha with a sub-two minute swim (1:59.93), followed by Wesley Coles (1:57.93), Colin Landweer (2:00.30) and Nathan Rhea (2:03.18). After swimming 8:06.68 in the heat with the Japan National Team and Australia the previous weekend, our men’s team swam 8:01.34 for a 3rd place finish at the Omaha meet. The time is the 92nd fastest time on record nationally for any age, and is the 58th fastest time posted by swimmers between the ages of 15 and 18. The Winter Junior National time standard in the event is 7:53.39. The 400 Medley Relay with Nathan Rhea’s lead-off backstroke of 1:02.42, followed by Wesley Coles (1:13.13), Chris Nolan (59.33) and Colin Landweer (54.57) swam a time of 4:09.45 which was enough for an 11th place finish. The Winter Junior National time standard in that event is 4:01.19.

Two years ago TNT had no swimmers entered into the Santa Clara International meet, for the first time in several years. Last year trailblazers Colin Landweer and Nathan Rhea qualified and competed at the meet to become the first two of a new cohort. Five swimmers competed at the meet this year, and includedWesley Coles, Mallory Korenwinder, Colin Landweer Chris Nolan and Nathan Rhea.  Chris Nolan became the only individual with a second swim, and he did so in the 200 meter butterfly event with a time of 2:07.25 and a 7th place finish in the bonus heat, which was the 25th fastest time swam at the meet in the event that fielded 9 swimmers in each of three final heats.

2012-sc1.jpg

Mallory Korenwinder was one of two swimmers (the other being Chris Nolan) who came away with a 100% improvement rate, and her highest place finish came in the 100 meter breaststroke where she posted a time of 1:15.72 that resulted in a 45th place finish. The highest place finish from Wesley Coles was 55th in the 400 freestyle (4:15.35) and the highest place finish for Nathan Rhea was 37th in the 400 IM where he posted a time 4:49.27. Colin Landweer’s time of 2:17.55 gave him his highest place finish of 63rd in the 200 IM.

Our four male swimmers teamed up for three relays, the highlight being the 800 freestyle relay where an opportunity presented itself that placed our team into lane 5 which is commonly reserved for the fastest team entered into the event. Our sixth place performance by Wesley Coles, Chris Nolan, Colin Landweer and Nathan Rhea in the event was attained while competing with the Japan National Team to the left in lane 6 and the Australian National Team to the right in lane 3 in the 9-lane pool where lane 5 would be the fastest seed. Twelve TNT swimmers competed at the IMX Meet held in Bakersfield on May 12th. Swimmers needed to compete in all five IMX events in order to earn a high point award at the meet. Nine year old Danielle Albright was one of two TNT swimmers to enter five events, and became the high point recipient for the 10-under division by swimming to four 2nd place finishes and one 4th place finish.

Our team had four event champions at the meet that included Chris Hansen who took home the win in the 13-over 400 IM (5:13.93). Fourteen year old Mallory Korenwinder won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:53.22, while nine-year old Priscilla Niayesh was the champion in the 100 fly for the 10-under division (1:38.62). Chris Nolan was our only double winner, and he did this in both the 200 breaststroke (2:38.69) and 200 fly (2:13.59) events in the 13-over division.

Five swimmers improved every event they entered, thereby maintaining a 100% improvement rate when considering those times that had been previously recorded with the team. Josh Avila and Morgan Coddington each improved one event, while sister Paige Coddington improved two of two events. Chris Hansen improved all three events he entered, while Priscilla Niayesh improved all four events that she had entered.
