2014 June AGI1 - Copy

Sixteen TNT swimmers competed at the 2014 June Age Group Invitational hosted by Buena Ventura in Ventura over the June 19-22 weekend, and performances resulted in two records being broken, and an additional record being tied.

Twelve year old Visalia swimmer, Janessa Bringe, swam 2:49.89 in the 200 meter butterfly event to match Katelyn Herrera’s team record that was set in 2009 at the San Luis Obispo Firecracker meet nearly five years earlier. Her time currently ranks 238th in the nation among all 12-year old girls who brave the event. Ten year old Peyton Costa had set the team record in the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:23.18 at the Clovis meet the previous month, and now at the June Age Group Invitational, both Toby Jones, who swam 1:23.06, and Peyton Costa went under that pre-existing record, Peyton swimming 1:22.93 to retain the record. Peyton’s time ranks 164th nationally, while Toby’s time ranks 176th. Jackson Huckabay had set the 10-under 50 backstroke record last summer during Junior Olympics as a 37.80, and Peyton Costa slid under the previous record to set it at 37.44, and a time that breaks into the top-100 performances in the nation at 91st.

Peyton led the team in points from individual events, earning top-8 finishes in five of his six events, and these included the 100 breast (3rd – 1:31.96), 100 back (5th – 1:22.93), 50 back (6th – 37.44), 100 free (7th – 1:11.79) and 50 breast (7th – 43.84). Toby Jones was our next highest point getter earning top-8 finishes in four of his six events, including the 50 breast (3rd – 43.03), 100 breast (4th – 1:33.62), 100 back (6th – 1:23.06) and 200 IM (6th – 2:55.62). Our other top-8 finishers included Owen Ansel who finished 5th in the 100 breast (1:10.67), Janessa Bringe who finished 7th in the 400 free (4:58.81), Morgan Coddington who finished 7th in the 400 IM (5:27.00) and 8th in the 200 breaststroke (2:56.74), Skylar Ford who finished 6th in the 50 fly (32.58), and Jakob Koorey finishing 6th in the 100 breast (1:15.78). Additional top-16 finishers along with their highest place include: Danielle Albright (9th), Alonso Escobedo (9th), Khloe McCarthy (9th), Megan Ridenour (16th), and Katherine Sullivan (12th).

Layla

Thirty-one TNT swimmers traveled south to Bakersfield over the June 7-8 weekend to compete in the long course meet following the close of the school year. Several used this meet as a tune-up for the upcoming June Age Group Invitational that takes place two weeks following.

Our top performer at the meet must go to 10-year old Layla Flores of Visalia who was an event champion in seven of the nine events that she competed in, and placed second in the remaining two events. A Far Western qualifier from earlier this year, Layla won the 100 meter fly (1:33.63), 50 breast (44.99), 50 free (33.57), 100 free (1:13.66), 50 fly (38.73), 50 back (41.41) and 200 IM (3:05.16) events. Other event champions included Danielle Albright who won the 11-12 200 breaststroke (3:08.94) while only 11-years old, Owen Ansel who won both the 200 breast (2:34.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.55), along with Janessa Bringe of Visalia who won the 12-under 400 IM (5:56.45).
Sixteen year old Fig Garden swimmer, and USA Swimming Junior National qualifier, Lauren Davis, won the 100 breaststroke (1:21.89), while Katelyn Herrera who won the 13-over 200 fly (2:36.22). Chris Nolan pulled off an upset in the 100 freestyle (56.49) for the 15-over division, as Visalia’s 13-year old Megan Ridenour remained uncontested in both breaststroke events (3:09.13 in the 200 and 1:24.33 in the 100). Birthday girl Alex Roberts, now 12 years old, finished first in the 50 backstroke, while 12-year old Katherine Sullivan made her first Zone cut after winning the 200 backstroke event in a time of 2:45.63.

The team maintained a 55% improvement rate with four individuals improving 100% of their times. Improvements were led by 12-year old Jillian Gaines of Hanford who entered eight events, and improved all eight. She, along with the Garabedian due of 12-year old Amanda Garabedian and 10-year old Nadia Garabedian, who each improved seven of seven events, teamed with 16-year old Owen Ansel who entered and improved two events, to lead all swimmers in improvement rates. Twelve year old Wyatt Ward of Hanford was the sole medalist among our team of eight who attended the Speedo Grand Challenge swim meet over the Memorial Day weekend. The championship final heat at this meet is limited to the top 4 performances in the preliminary heats for swimmers 13-over, and only the top four performances are recognized on the podium for any event. Wyatt Ward swam 37.55 in the 50 meter breaststroke on day 1 to finish 3rd in that 12-under event, and ended his meet with a 4th place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke in a time of 1:22.57 for that event.

Two other swimmers earned second swims, with Danielle Albright making it to the championship final, and 8th place finish, in the 100 breaststroke after swimming a 1:26.44 in the preliminary heats while only eleven years old. Danielle was the youngest competitor at the senior meet that was host to swimmers like Karlee Bispo, Bobby Bollier, Jessica Hardy, and Mike Alexandrov, and representing teams from the likes of USC, Stanford, and countries such as Portugal and Guatemala. Kyle Grissom was our only other finalist as he placed 13th , winning the B-consolation heat with a time of 56.99 in the 100 meter butterfly.

Emily Goodbar’s time improvement to 1:05.80 in the 100 fly was our next highest finisher at 31st in that event, while Khloe McCarthy’s time of 5:25.53 in the 400 IM finished 34th there. Katelyn Herrera’s 4:37.60 in the 400 meter freestyle was enough for her highest finish of 37th, while Owen Ansel had his highest finish of 40th in the 100 meter breaststroke after dropping to a time of 1:11.47. Jimmy Koster’s highest place was 41st in the 200 back, resulting from his time of 2:18.11.

The USA Swimming Grand Prix circuit for 2014 is comprised of six swim meets across the country with the meet in Mesa, Arizona being the forth stop for those competing among the Olympic Athletes who have historically represented countries around the globe. This year’s Mesa meet was different, partly because of the return of Michael Phelps onto the competitive stage, and also for two of our swimmers qualifying for the televised finals broadcast on Universal Sports live, and one of whom qualified to the Championship heat alongside the likes of Olympic Gold Medalist and Olympic and American Record Holder Tyler Clary, North Carolina’s, and USA Swimming National Team members, Tom Luchsinger, and Stanford’s Bobby Bollier.

Nolan 2014 Mesa2 Nolan 2014 Mesa5

Christopher Nolan came home with a 7th place finish in the final heat of the 200 meter butterfly after outperforming names such as Tom Shields during the preliminary heats.  Chris’s time in the fastest seeded heat of 2:04.99 came in second behind Tyler Clary. Chris also earned a second swim in the 400 IM moving from 30th in the D-final after swimming 4:44.89 to 29th. He improved his 200 meter freestyle to a 1:58.82.

Mallory 2014 Mesa2 Mallory 20143

Mallory Korenwinder earned a spot on live TV in the 100 meter breaststroke after swimming a time of 1:13.34 in the preliminary heats. She was one of only two 15-year old swimmers among the top-16. Her time has posted as the top 15-year old nationally to date. Her second final was in the 200 breaststroke where her 2:43.02 was enough for a 28th place finish in the D-final.

Sixteen year old Lauren Davis made it to her first showing among the Olympians with her highest finish at 38th in the 100 breaststroke, and a time of 1:19.68.

2014 SC Far Western Team - Copy

Ten year old Visalia swimmer Kylie Walker came away with the most impressive overall performance for any of the eight TNT swimmers attending the 2014 Far Western meet that took place over the first weekend of April in Morgan Hill. She improved three of her five events with the largest drop of over one second in the 100 fly where her time of 1:04.75 was not only a silver medal finish in the event, but is also currently the 9th fastest time posted by any 10-year old girl in the nation. Needless to say, her Far Western swim was an improvement of her previous team record of 1:05.99 that she swam at Junior Olympics two months earlier. Kylie’s other second place finish was in the 50 fly where her time of 29.11 slid under her preexisting record of 29.31 that she set at Junior Olympics, and her current time also stands as the 9th fastest nationally. Her final time improvement, and new record, also resulted in a championship final. Kylie swam 1:00.50 in the 100 freestyle, once again going under her preexisting record of 1:00.78 from JO’s, and finishing 8th in that event. This time currently ranks 64th nationally. She rounded out her four finals with a 27.60 in the 50 freestyle, a time that was enough for a 5th place finish at the meet.

Two additional individuals set team records, both in the 10-under boys division with one resulting in a championship final that fielded ten swimmers. Peyton Costa improved three of his ten events, the 100 back by a margin of over three seconds. The 1:11.29 earned a spot in the top-10, where he moved from 10th to 9th, and went well under Jonathan Granada’s 1:13.34 that he posted as the previous team record at the Selma meet back in 2009. Peyton’s time stands as the 223rd fastest nationally.

Visalia swimmer Benjamin Wheeler had one of the highest improvement percentages at the meet, improving three of his four events, the largest in the 500 freestyle where he improved by over 16 seconds. His time of 6:06.32 was well under the previous team record set four years ago by Alonso Escobedo at the Arizona meet as a 6:10.63. Benjamin’s time stands as the 260th fastest for any 10-year old in the nation.

Three of our swimmers improved 100% of their times, and the improvement rates were led by Toby Jones who improved six of six events, the largest drop of nearly 19 seconds in the 200 IM being the largest improvement by any TNT swimmer at the meet. Toby’s highest place was 18th in the 100 breaststroke. Danielle Albright qualified at the bottom of the age group, and improved her single event (50 breaststroke), and finished 35th there. Visalia Swimmer Janessa Bringe competed in two events, and improved by nearly five seconds in the 500 free. Her highest finish was 36th in the 200 fly. Visalia team mate Layla Flores improved two of three events. Her highest finish was 29th in the 100 breaststroke, while Selma swimmer Madison Pallares had her highest finish as 50th in the 50 breaststroke event.
