Currently 15 TNT swimmers have short course qualifying times for the Senior meet held in Concord during the first weekend of November. The on-line entry deadline is Wednesday, October 28th, which leaves the Merced meet as the last weekend to qualify. Although some of our swimmers have achieved the long course qualifying time standard from the summer, congratulations to the following 15 swimmers who have achieved the B qualifying time in short course:

TNT had 81 swimmers that were attached to the team at the RCA meet, and 54 swimmers were unattached while there. Those were the top two team-based finishes at the meet in terms of point totals. The 72 first place finishes of TNT outpaced the second Gold medal count of Clovis (19 first place finishes), and the unattached 18 first place finishes. First place finishers went to approximately 40 of our swimmers: Fayyaz Ahamed (100 free & 50 fly), Owen Ansel (100 back & 200 IM), Kaleigh Botill (100 free, 100 fly & 200 back), Thomas Brown (200 breast), Callen Bruening (200 IM), Courtney Brummet (50 fly & 100 back), Greyson Canterbury (100 free, 50 fly & 1000 free), Wesley Coles (100 free, 100 fly, 400 IM & 200 free), Madison Droney (50 free), Hannah Giles (100 free, 200 breast & 200 back), Parker Giles (200 IM & 200 free), Kyle Grissom (100 free, 100 breast & 50 fly), Chris Hansen (100 breast & 200 free), Sam Hansen (100 free, 200 breast, 100 fly & 400 IM), Katelyn Herrera (100 free, 50 fly & 200 IM), Cori Hoover (100 free & 200 free), David Jacobs (100 fly), Michael Jia (50 fly), Dax Korenwinder (100 free, 100 breast & 100 back), Mallory Korenwinder (50 fly, 100 back & 200 IM), JD Koster (100 free), Jimmy Koster (200 free), Khloe McCarthy (200 free), Madison McCarthy (50 fly & 100 back), Mandi Mccaslin (100 breast & 200 IM), Landon Molin (200 back), Stephanie Nash (200 back), Mia Newkirk (100 breast), Jazmine Niayesh (100 free & 50 fly), Preston Niayesh (100 breast, 50 fly & 100 back), Jens Niederreiter (200 IM), Christopher Nolan (200 breast, 400 IM & 1000 free), Nathan Rhea (200 breast & 400 IM), Tenny Rizzo (100 fly & 200 back), Allison Ross (100 fly), JT Scott (100 back & 1000 free), Emily Shandrew (100 fly & 200 free), Carter Shaw (200 free), Taylor Shaw (200 back & 400 IM) and Jordan Stotts (100 free & 200 breast).

The team point ranking is presented in the following table:

rca-team-places.JPG

The team improvement percentage was an astounding 84% where 147 of the 176 events were improved. Thirty-nine of our swimmers improved all events entered. These included: Fayyaz Ahamed, Josh Avila, Kaleigh Botill, Callen Bruening, Courtney Brummet, Wesley Coles, Madison Ekizian, Chris Ewins, Madison Gilbert, Simon Grigoryan, Alex Hansen, Chris Hansen, Katelyn Herrera, Ashley Hughes, Thys Jacobi, Mathew Jacobs, Scott Jordan, Jakob Koorey, Mallory Korenwinder, JD Koster, Jimmy Koster, Joe Koster, Josh Koster, Colin Landweer, Conor Martin, Jason Matkin, Preston Niayesh, Kara Nino, Megan Nino, Christopher Nolan, Savanah Nolan, Nick Orton, Kyle Rizzo, Tenny Rizzo, Allison Ross, Emily Shandrew, Carter Shaw, Taylor Shaw and Jordan Stotts.

Additionally, two TNT team records were broken at the meet. Twelve year old Greyson Canterbury broke the 1000 freestyle record with his 12:11.48. This record was previously held by Christopher Nolan and set last year at the Chowchilla meet as a 12:49.38. Since 14 year old Nathan Rhea improved his 200 yard breaststroke event, and he was the current team record holder in that event, he became the only other individual on the team to break a record. His 2:16.47 at the meet shaves off one tenth of a second from the 13-14 team record that he had set at the Hanford inter-squad meet earlier this summer.

No, that’s not the total count of all swimmers at the meet, that’s just the swimmers who are uniting in efforts to form a competitive team in CCS. There were 84 swimmers already representing the TNT affiliation, and over 30 additional swimmers awaiting the 120 day requirement prior to becoming attached. This becomes the largest showing of any single team at any meet over the past several year of swimming in Central California Swimming. There were over 320 swimmers entered in the meet from the various clubs in Central California Swimming.

High point recognition was awarded to the top three point getters in each age division. Nineteen swimmers from TNT had received a high point award in their respective age group.

One team record was broken by Mallory Korenwinder. Mallory, who is currently ranked 7th nationally in the 50 meter and 100 meter breaststroke events for 11-year old girls, swam the 1650 freestyle for the first time. Her time of 21:23.31 was fast enough to reestablish the previous record that was held by Khloe McCarthy and set last year at the Tulare meet in February. The previous record was 21:36.01.

Sixty-two swimmers had times that were previously recorded with the team in events that were 50 yards or longer. Twenty-five of these swimmers improved all events that they entered, thereby maintaining a 100% improvement rate which contributed to the team’s 64% improvement overall. Congratulations to:

Our team of 24 swimmers that included 20 TNT and 4 unattached scored enough points for a third place finish at the Monterey Summer’s End Classic during the Memorial Day weekend. TNT swam away with high point awards in five age groups. The 6-under high point was awarded to Priscilla Niayesh of Visalia at COS for the girls and Hazim Ahamed training of Hanford for the boys. The 10-under boy’s award recipient was Fayyaz Ahamed also training in Hanford. The 13-14 award winners went to Hanford’s Hannah Giles for the girls and Tulare’s Nathan Rhea for the boys. Overall team points were led by Hannah Giles (156 points), Fayyaz Ahamed (154 points) and Greyson Canterbury (151 points).

Twenty swimmers had times in 50 yard or longer events that had been previously recorded with the team. Twelve of our 20 swimmers improved 100% of their times: Fayyaz Ahamed, Josh Avila, Kaleigh Botill, Callen Bruening, Greyson Canterbury, Makenna Mason, Michael Mason, Madison McCarthy, Landon Molin, Precilla Niayesh, Savanah Nolan and Breann Santos. Improvements at 50% or higher included Christopher Nolan (88%), JT Scott (86%), Athena Niayesh (80%) and Hazim Ahamed (60%). The overall team improvement percentage was 77%.

Welcome to Ashley Hughes (age 10), Colin Landweer (age 14), Blaire Williams (age 10) and Zelas Williams (age 6). These four swimmers now have established times recorded with TNT.

TNT had several swimmers who qualified to attend the Western Zone meet held in Hawaii this past week. Two of our swimmers competed at the meet, and both came away with multiple final swims and top eight finishes.

Fourteen year old Nathan Rhea competed in six individual events, and qualified for finals in five of his six events. His highest finish was in the 800 meter freestyle where he clocked at 9:02.30 which was twelve seconds faster than the time he just swam at the Clovis Senior Q meet less than a month earlier. His next highest finish was in the 400 IM event where his time of 4:55.72 was fast enough for a third place finish, and was nearly ten seconds faster than his previous life-time best swam at the Age Group Invite in June. His top eight performance continued with the 200 meter breaststroke (2:33.27) and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:11.13) where he had fourth place finishes in both events. The 100 breaststroke time ranks 45th in the nation for all 14 year old male swimmers. Nathan finally had a seventh place finish in the 400 meter freestyle where he swam a 4:28.36, after swimming a life-time best of 4:24.65 in the preliminary heats. Nathan broke four team records (400 IM, 100 breast, 400 free and 800 free) and improved his times in five of his six events. Nathan now qualifies for six Sectional events while only 14 years old.

Eleven year old Mallory Korenwinder finals in both breaststroke events, and becomes the only 11 year old in the 11-12 age group to earn a second swim. She may be the only 11 year old in all four Zone meets across the country (Western, Central, Eastern and Southern). Her highest finish was her third-place finish in the 50 meter breaststroke (36.94) with a time that currently ranks 7th nationally among all 11 year old girl swimmers. The current ranking takes into account Far Westerns, Western Zones and Central Zones. Considering that the Eastern Zones, which starts this week, has only two 11 year olds entered in the event at 39.41 and 39.46, and the top 11 year old in the Southern zone in Florida swam a 37.67, Mallory has a chance to hang on to a top 10 ranking. This is significant considering that she has the beginning of next long course season to reestablish a ranking at the same age. The 36.94 is also fast enough to break our team record while still on the bottom of the age group. The previous record was held by Joclyn Ford and was set at Zones in Hawaii (Maui) in 2002. Mallory’s second final was a sixth place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:21.65). That time also currently ranks 7th in the nation. The time qualifies for the Winter Invitational and is less than a second from the Speedo Grand Challenge cut.

TNT scored a total of 2917 points at JO’s which was high enough to place third at the meet behind Clovis and Santa Maria. Our relays contributed to 1066 points, and our individual events accounted for 1851 points. Tule Nation Tritons scored 219 points ahead of Bakersfield and was 233 points behind Santa Maria and 395 points behind Clovis. Points from individual events were led by Josh Avila (training in Visalia and scoring 132 points), Katelyn Herrera (training in Tulare – 128) and Parker Giles (training in Hanford – 118).Our sole age group high point winner for Junior Olympics was eight year old Preston Nayesh winning high point honors in the 8-under division.

At 19 gold medals, Tule Nation maintained the second highest gold medal count behind Bakersfield’s 25. TNT Gold medalists for individual events included Josh Avila (50 breast & 100 breast), Greyson Canterbury (50 free, 100 fly & 100 free), Katelyn Herrera (100 fly), JD Koster (50 free & 100 free), Preston Niayesh (50 fly, 50 back & 50 breast), and Nathan Rhea (200 IM). Five team records were broken by four different swimmers at the Junior Olympics. Record breaking performances were led with the two broken by Sam Hansen. After establishing records in both the 800 and 1500 meter freestyle events at Sectionals just the weekend prior to Junior Olympics, Sam dropped six seconds in the 800 (8:57.10) and nearly a quarter of a second in the 1500 (17:05.35) freestyle events. His 800 is now less than one second from the Long Beach Grand Prix cut. Twelve year old Josh Avila became another record breaker, breaking his first team record for 11-12 boys in the 100 meter breaststroke event. Josh’s 1:24.02 is nearly a second and a half faster than one of the longest standing team records in the books. The previous record (1:25.59) was set by Micah Storey at Zones in 1989. Greyson Canterbury joins Josh in becoming a first-time record breaker by setting a new standard in the 50 meter freestyle for the 11-12 boys. His 29.51 breaks Jason Ricablanca’s 29.86 set in Bakersfield in 1994. Prior to departing to Hawaii for the Western Zone Championships, 14 year old Nathan Rhea broke the team record for the 13-14 boy’s 200 IM with a 2:21.71. The previous record of 2:25.46 was held by Jared Hopper, and was set at Zones in Arizona in 2003.

Day 5 (Sunday) – The final day of Sectionals concludes with two team records being broken by two TNT swimmers. Sam Hansen continues to improve his mile (1500 meter freestyle) event swimming from a 17:17.55 that he used to qualify for Sectionals at the Ventura meet last month, to a 17:05.58, thereby establishing a new team record. 14-year old Nathan Rhea broke his record in the 100 meter breaststroke, dropping from a 1:13.01 swam last weekend at the Q meet, to a 1:12.19. Zach Hansen also improved his 1:11.47 in the 100 breaststroke to a 1:08.33, and Katherine Bristow neared her life-time best in the 100 breaststroke with her 1:25.28 on this final day. A total of five team records were set this weekend: Sam Hansen (800 free – 9:04.07 & 1500 free – 17:05.58), Zach Hansen (200 breaststroke 2:28.22), and Nathan Rhea (200 breaststroke – 2:32.13 & 100 breaststroke – 1:12.19). Day 4 (Saturday) – TNT swimmers maintain a high improvement percentage as they compete on day 4 of Sectionals. Katherine Bristow, Zach Hansen and Hannah Giles all swim to life-time best times. Katherine swam two events including the 200 IM, recording a 2:40.50 and the 50 meter freestyle with a 29.04, shaving approximately a half second in the IM and a tenth in the 50 free. Hannah Giles, swimming her first Sectional meet also improves two tenths in the 50 meter freestyle to a 28.78, thereby qualifying for the Speedo Grand Challenge. Zach Hansen swam a 2:18.32 in the 200 IM event swimming well faster than his best of 2:23.83 swum at Sectionals in Federal Way during March of 2008. Zach’s becomes the second fastest 15-over IM swimmer in the history of the team.

Day 3 (Friday) – Time improvements continue in chunks as Sam Hansen was the sole TNT swimmer who swam a qualified event for Friday. Sam qualified for the 400 meter IM with a 5:00.82 at the Porterville meet in June (this past month), and swam a 4:55.32 this morning, improving five and a half seconds. His time is the second fastest time on record with TNT just three seconds off of Jared Hopper’s team record which was set while he swam in the heat with Michael Phelps at the Stanford Grand Prix meet in 2005. Sam’s time now qualifies for the Long Beach Grand Prix. Nathan Rhea time trialed the 200 fly and swam a 2:25.72 making him the second fastest 13-14 200 flyer in the team’s history behind Kohlton Norys. Natha’s previous time was a 2:51.58 (no, that’s not a typo) swam at the May Day Classic in 2008.
