Kohlton Inside SW

Check out this month’s May issue of Swimming World Magazine. Kohlton is the only male swimmer on the cover which depicts the Cal Berkley women’s team for winning NCAA Championships. Auburn was the winning NCAA men’s team, and Kohlton became the first male swimmer in the history of the school to win the 100 yard backstroke event. As Swimming World Magazine notes, he was also the only male swimmer to win an individual event for Auburn. Winning the NCAA Division 1 Championships typically marks the swimmer as being the fastest in the nation that year.

Twelve year old Christopher Nolan sets the record-breaking pace while competing at the May Day Classic swim meet hosted by Bakersfield Swim Club during the first weekend of May. Christopher broke records in half of the events he entered at the meet. Three of the records set by him were previously at this very meet. His 200 breaststroke record goes from a 3:22.65 to a 3:04.85 at this meet. His 200 fly improves from a 2:54.37 from last year to a 2:41.83 this year, and the largest improvement came in the 400 IM where his pre-existing record of 6:12.83 is now a 4:48.69. His final record was in the 200 meter backstroke event where his 2:55.90 broke Jonathan Castellow’s 3:05.31 set three years ago in Bakersfield during May of 2006.

Christopher also maintained 100% improvement at the meet, and furthermore, achieved two new Age Group Invitational cuts for the 13-14 age group – a significant achievement since Christopher is still 12. Christopher’s new records in the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly events are fast enough to compete in Ventura in his new age group. Congratulations to a job well done.

Ten year old Jonathan Granada was a second record breaker at the meet. After becoming the owner of nine of the twelve short course team records, Jonathan breaks two long course team records in the 10-under division. Jonathan’s 1:14.74 in his 100 meter freestyle breaks Christopher Nolan’s previous record of 1:15.22 set at Merced in April of 2007, and Jonathan’s 40.63 breaks Jason Ricablanca’s team record of 41.58 in the 50 backstroke which was set at Junior Olympics back in 1992. Congratulations on a phenomenal age group.

Twelve year old Christopher Hansen is the final swimmer on the team to break a team record. Along with Christopher Nolan, his 3:14.90 in the 200 meter breaststroke was also faster than the 3:22.65 marked the previous team record.

There were 42 TNT swimmers who competed at the meet, and eight of them swam long course times with TNT for the first time. A warm welcome goes to Fayyaz and Hazim Ahamed who are training in Hanford, and who arrived from Waverly Area Aquatic Club in New York. Fayyaz finished in 1st place at the STSL East Meet 5 with a 36.27 in the 50 yard freestyle for 10-yer olds earlier this year. Erika Blaylock training in Visalia joins us for the first time with a 4th place finish in the 13-14 100 freestyle event. Eleven year old Callen Bruening swims his first long course meet with the team and also finishes 4th in the 11-12 50 fly with a 41.15. An Age Group Invite qualifier also from Visalia, swimming his first long course meet and winning both the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly events for the 11-12 boys is Greyson Canterbury. JD Garza finishes his college season with COS by returning from his Conference meet and swims his first long course meet in the 15-18 age group. Thirteen year old Landon Molin also swims his first events in an Olympic size pool and finishes sixth in the 100 backstroke event. Eleven year old Andrea Ross (who shows absolutely no fear on a steel bull) joins her older sister in the long course scene. Welcome to all new swimmers.

The remaining 34 swimmers all had pre-recorded events on the team. The overall team improvement percentage was a high 67% (over two-thirds of our swims resulted in improvements). Nine swimmers improved all events that were swum at the meet. Congratulations to: Malaine Garison, Makenzie Gilbert, Jonathan Granada, August Guerrero, Katelyn Herrera, Preston Niayesh, Kara Nino, Christopher Nolan, and Keshin Visahan for leading the team in improvements. Four of our swimmers improved 80-89% of their times, and these included Cori Hoover (88%), Madison Elick (86%), Sam Hansen (83%), and Megan Nino (83%), while those improving in the 70% range included Madison Gilbert (78%), Savanah Nolan (78%), Jimmy Koster (75%), Madison McCarthy (75%) and Nathan Rhea (71%). Sixty-percent improvements went to Joshua Caminero (67%), Thys Jacobi (67%), Breann Santos (67%), Emily Shandrew (67%) and Alex Hansen (63%). Two swimmers improved 50% of their times and they included Wesley Coles (50%) and Jazmine Niayesh (50%).

Nearly half of our TNT swimmers (20 out of 42) swam away with first place finishes. These included eleven year old Greyson Canterbury (50 breast & 50 fly), 15 year old Wesley Coles (200 IM), 12 year old Madison Elick (50 breast), 13 year old Alex Ellis (100 back & 50 free), 12 year old Madison Gilbert (200 IM, 50 fly, 100 back, 100 breast & 50 back), 10 year old Jonathan Granada (100 free, 50 fly, 200 fly, 100 back, 50 free, 200 free, 50 back & 100 fly), 14 year old Alex Hansen (100 back, 100 breast, 200 free, & 100 fly), 12 year old Chris Hansen (200 IM, 400 free, 100 breast, 200 free), 16 year old Sam Hansen (400 free, 200 back & 400 IM), 11 year old Katelyn Herrera (200 IM & 200 free). 14 year old Cori Hoover (200 IM, 100 breast & 100 fly), 8 year old Dax Korenwinder (50 breast, 50 fly, 100 back, 50 free, 50 back & 100 fly), 10 year old Mallory Korenwinder (50 breast & 100 breast), 8 year old JD Koster (50 fly), 11 year old Khloe McCarthy (100 free & 200 free), 12 year old Megan NinoChristopher Nolan (200 breast, 200 IM & 200 fly), 9 year old Savanah Nolan (50 breast), 14 year old Nathan Rhea (200 IM & 100 back), 8 year old Breann Santos (50 breast & 50 fly). Pictured above along with Mallory and Jonathan is Blayze Jessen of Merced who is a CCS standout and one of the few 9-year olds in the nation who are fast enough to qualify and compete at Far Westerns.

DAY 1

TNT sent four of our top age group swimmers to one of the top age group meets in the nation (Greyson Canterbury, Hannah Giles, Jonathan Granada, and Mallory Korenwinder). During the preliminary heats on the first day of the meet ten year old Mallory Korenwinder breaks her pre-existing team record by swimming a 1:15.76 in her 100 breaststroke which is fast enough to enter finals in second place. She holds on to that second place finish in finals and drops her record an additional second and a half to a 1:14.26. That moves her national ranking from 14th back among the top ten, in sixth place. Mallory is a returning finalist to the meet.

Ten year old Jonathan Granada travels to Morgan Hill to compete at his first Far Western meet after qualifying for the prestigious meet within his first year of club swimming. Not only does he qualify for the meet, he finals on his first day. This 10-year old’s 1:10.55 in his 100 fly is nearly a two second improvement over his pre-established team record, and will take him into finals in eighth place tonight (Thursday, April 2nd).

Greyson Canterbury also competed in his first Far Western meet and improved one second in his 100 fly. Hannah Giles is another returning finalist to the Far Western scene, and she swam the 200 breaststroke event for her first race.

DAY 2

Mallory Korenwinder improves nearly three seconds to break the team’s third, and her second, team record while at Far Westerns. Mallory swam a 2:35.99 in her 200 IM, fast enough for second alternate, and a move up from 18th to 10th place. Her time breaks Lindsay Storey’s team record by two seconds. Lindsay had set the team record at the RCA meet back in 1994.

Jonathan Granada also maintains 100% improvement on the second day of Far Westerns with a four second drop in his 200 IM. He had also improved his 100 free to a 1:04.02, now within 2 seconds of an 11-12 AA cut.

That’s the heading of the press release that came out of Auburn University stating that Kolton’s 45.26 edged out Cal Berkley’s David Russel by .04 seconds. It was a great race to the finish. Combined with the other events and diving, at the Auburn takes the title of NCAA Champion. Kohlton’s contribution included two winning relays, a seventh place finish in the 200 backstroke, and winning the 100 backstroke. His 45.13 from his morning swim was only about a half second off of Ryan Lochte’s American Record of 44.60 which he set at his NCAA meet in March of 2006. Kohlton became the first Auburn swimmer in that school’s history to win a 100 backstroke event at the NCAA meet. Congratulations Kohlton – TNT is very proud of you.

Check the Tulare TNT web page for the block of rooms that are set aside at the hotel directly across from the pool.

Finally, two team records had been broken while at this first long course meet. Both records were previously held by the current record holder. Twelve year old Christopher Nolan broke his own 800 meter freestyle record in the 11-12 age group by over a minute and thirty seconds. Chris swam 12:04.33 in the 800 last June at the same pool in Porterville, and this March (only nine months later) swam a 10:32.11.

Nathan Rhea was the only other record breaker at the meet. Nathan is 14 years old and also broke his 800 meter freestyle team record for the 13-14 age group. Nathan swam a 9:33.20 while at Western Zones in  Oregon last August while he was 13 years old. His 9:27.62 is nearly six seconds faster than his time swam at Zones last year.

Congratulations to all swimmers.
